Your 14-day Tanzania itinerary

This itinerary is designed by our family — we have been running safaris since 1978. Seven days in Tanzania's Northern Circuit takes in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. Five nights on Zanzibar completes the trip with Indian Ocean beaches and Swahili culture. Every day is planned by people who know the parks intimately.

1

Arrival in Arusha

Arusha, Tanzania

45-minute private transfer

Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Your private guide meets you in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name. Drive 45 minutes to Arusha, Tanzania's safari capital. Rest at your hotel — we use Ele Collection or comparable boutique lodge near the city center. No safari activities today — just acclimatize, hydrate, and prepare for tomorrow.

Accommodation

Ele Collection or similar (day use if arriving early)

Dinner included

2

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire — 2.5 hours from Arusha

2.5-hour drive + full day game drive

After an early breakfast, depart for Tarangire. Known as the 'elephant park,' Tarangire is home to Tanzania's second-largest elephant population and famous for its ancient baobab trees — some over 1,000 years old. In the dry season (July-October), wildlife concentrates dramatically around the Tarangire River. Game drive through the park with your private guide, stopping for a picnic lunch in a scenic spot. Afternoon game drive en route to your camp.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

3

Tarangire to Central Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

4-5 hour drive + game drives

Morning game drive in Tarangire, then begin the journey to the Serengeti. The drive takes approximately 4-5 hours via Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Enter the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill gate and begin your first game drive in the heart of the park. The Serengeti is 15,000km² of unfenced wilderness — your camp is positioned based on the season and migration patterns. Evening game drive on the way to camp.

Accommodation

Serengeti Safari Camp or similar (location varies by season)

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

4

Central Serengeti Game Drives

Serengeti National Park

Full day game drive

Full day in the central Serengeti (Seronera region). This is one of the most reliable areas for leopard sightings in Africa — the Seronera River provides permanent water that draws wildlife year-round. Your guide will seek out predators, elephant herds, and the varied landscapes that make the Serengeti extraordinary. Option for a sunrise game drive followed by a leisurely breakfast at camp, then afternoon game drive until sunset.

Accommodation

Serengeti Safari Camp or similar

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

5

Southern Serengeti & Ndutu

Southern Serengeti / Ndutu Region

3-4 hour game drive

Drive south toward the Ndutu region, where the wildebeest calve each year between January and March. Even outside calving season, the southern plains offer a different Serengeti experience — vast open landscapes, fewer vehicles, and a sense of remoteness that the central Serengeti lacks. Game drive en route, arriving at your camp by late afternoon. The Ndutu region is also excellent for cheetah — the open grasslands are perfect hunting territory.

Accommodation

Ndutu Safari Camp or similar

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

6

Southern Serengeti Exploration

Southern Serengeti / Ndutu Region

Full day game drive

Full day exploring the Ndutu region and southern plains. Depending on the season, you may witness the wildebeest beginning their migration north, or see the evidence of recent calving — thousands of newborn calves on the plains. Game drives at dawn and dusk, with time to relax at camp during the heat of midday. The southern Serengeti has very few other vehicles — this is safari as it was decades ago.

Accommodation

Ndutu Safari Camp or similar

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

7

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater — 2.5 hours from Ndutu

2.5-hour drive + full crater game drive

Depart after breakfast for Ngorongoro. Descend 600m into the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater floor is 264km² of self-contained wildlife ecosystem, home to all Big Five members except giraffe. Lunch at a designated picnic site on the crater floor. Afternoon game drive in the crater before ascending to your lodge on the rim, with sweeping views across the 'African Eden.'

Accommodation

Ngorongoro Safari Lodge or similar (rim lodge)

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

8

Ngorongoro Crater Morning & Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park

2-hour drive + game drives

Early morning game drive on the crater floor — this is the best time for predator sightings as wildlife is most active in the cool morning hours. After brunch and checkout, drive to Lake Manyara (approximately 2 hours). Lake Manyara is a compact but varied park — a soda lake fringed by alkaline flats, a groundwater forest, and a dramatic escarpment. Famous for its tree-climbing lions and enormous flamingo flocks. Evening game drive, then overnight near the park.

Accommodation

Lake Manyara Safari Camp or similar

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

9

Lake Manyara to Zanzibar

Zanzibar — Flight or Drive

1.5-hour flight + 45-minute transfer

Morning game drive in Lake Manyara, then transfer to Arusha for your flight to Zanzibar (approximately 1.5 hours flying time), or drive to Dar es Salaam for a ferry crossing. Most travelers fly — we arrange the domestic flight and airport transfers at Zanzibar. Arrive at your beach hotel on the north or east coast. The rest of the day is yours to relax, swim, and recover from the safari. Zanzibar's beaches are among the most beautiful in the Indian Ocean.

Accommodation

Nungwi Beach Hotel or similar (north coast)

Breakfast at lodge, lunch on own, dinner at hotel

10

Zanzibar Beach — Stone Town Excursion

Stone Town, Zanzibar

1-hour drive each way

After breakfast, transfer to Stone Town — Zanzibar's historic heart and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the narrow streets of the old Arab trading town: the House of Wonders, the former Slave Market (now Cathedral), the bustling Darajani Market, and the waterfront. Your guide will share the fascinating history of Zanzibar as a spice island and Swahili culture hub. Return to your beach hotel in the afternoon for relaxation and ocean time.

Questions Answered

Frequently asked questions about this itinerary

How much does a 14-day Tanzania and Zanzibar safari cost in 2026?

This itinerary starts from $4,200 per person based on mid-range comfort lodges and shared game drives. At the premium tier (luxury tented camps, beachfront hotel), the cost is $7,500-10,000 per person. The biggest variables are accommodation tier, time of year (peak season Jul-Oct costs more), and whether you choose a private or group safari. International flights, visa, and personal expenses are additional.

Is 14 days enough for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combo?

Fourteen days is the sweet spot for a Tanzania and Zanzibar combination. Seven days for the Northern Circuit safari gives you enough time to properly explore Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire without feeling rushed. Five days on Zanzibar allows you to truly relax after the safari, explore Stone Town, and enjoy the beach without urgency. Ten days would be the minimum for this combination — you would sacrifice some depth on safari or shorten your Zanzibar stay.

What is the best time of year for a 2-week Tanzania and Zanzibar itinerary?

June through October gives you peak safari conditions and excellent Zanzibar beach weather. The Great Migration river crossings (July-October) are spectacular in the northern Serengeti. January-March is equally excellent for safari — the wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti is extraordinary — and Zanzibar has sunny warm weather. April-May is the green season — fewer tourists, lower prices, but some safari roads can be muddy.

Can I skip Zanzibar and do a 2-week all-safari itinerary?

Absolutely. If you prefer to skip the beach and focus entirely on safari, a 14-day Northern and Southern Circuit combination is possible: 7 days Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara) and 7 days Southern Circuit (Ruaha, Katavi, Nyerere). This is an exceptional itinerary for the safari enthusiast who has already visited the Northern Circuit or wants the most complete Tanzania wildlife experience possible.

What if I want to add Kilimanjaro to this itinerary?

This is one of our most requested combinations — the 'three Icons' of Tanzania: Kilimanjaro, Safari, and Zanzibar. We would structure it as: 6-7 days Kilimanjaro climb (Marangu or Lemosho route), 5-6 days Northern Circuit safari, 4-5 days Zanzibar. The total trip would be 16-18 days. The cost for a 17-day Kilimanjaro + Safari + Zanzibar itinerary starts from $7,500 per person at mid-range.

Is this itinerary suitable for families with children?

Yes — the Northern Circuit logistics are family-friendly: short driving distances between parks, established infrastructure, and camps that cater specifically to families. Zanzibar is ideal for children — safe, relaxed, with calm waters on the north coast beaches. The minimum recommended age for a Tanzania safari is typically 5 years old, though younger children can be accommodated at certain camps with private vehicles and child-specific activities. We recommend a private safari for families rather than a group departure.
