Why 7 Days is Worth It

The safari you will actually remember

Seven days is the amount of time it takes to stop being a tourist and start being a safari traveller. In the first two days, everything is new — the landscape, the wildlife, the rhythm of early mornings and golden hour game drives. By day three, you are reading the signs: the grass bending where something large passed in the night, the vulture circle that means a predator has made a kill, the way the impala ewes are clustered tight because a leopard is somewhere in the acacia.

Our 7-day itinerary gives you three full days in the Serengeti — the heart of any Tanzania safari — spread across different areas of the park. You spend two evenings and two mornings inside the Ngorongoro Crater, which means you see it in different light and at different times of day. And you still visit Tarangire, the baobab-dotted park that many visitors say surprised them most.

This is not a rushed safari. It is a proper immersion in one of the most extraordinary wildlife landscapes on earth, guided by someone who knows it intimately, in a private vehicle that goes where you want to go, when you want to go there.

Day by Day

Your 7-day itinerary

Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Driving distance

120 km, approx. 2.5 hours

Wildlife highlights

Elephant, lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, baobab wildlife

Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport by 07:30. The drive to Tarangire takes you through the Masai Steppe — a landscape that feels genuinely wild before you even reach a park. Tarangire is one of Tanzania's most distinctive parks: ancient baobab trees dot the landscape like enormous sculptures, and in the dry season the Tarangire River draws enormous elephant families to its banks. You arrive in time for lunch at camp, then head out for an afternoon game drive from 15:00 to 18:00. Lions are common, leopards occasionally spotted in the riverine woodland, and the birdlife along the river is exceptional. Dinner at camp.

Highlight

A herd of 200+ elephants moving along the Tarangire River at sunset — one of the densest elephant concentrations in Africa.

Day 2 — Tarangire to Central Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

Driving distance

280 km, approx. 6 hours (or 45-min flight)

Wildlife highlights

Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, topi, Thomson's gazelle, hippo

An early morning game drive in Tarangire from 06:00 to 09:00 catches the wildlife at its most active before the heat of the day. After breakfast, you depart for the Serengeti — either by road through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (6 hours with a packed lunch, stopping at a viewpoint over the Great Rift Valley) or by light aircraft (45 minutes, spectacular aerial views of the Ngorongoro Highlands and the endless green Serengeti plains below). You arrive at your Serengeti camp by mid-afternoon, settle in, then head out for an evening game drive from 16:00 to 19:00 in the central Serengeti. Dinner and night in camp.

Highlight

The moment the Serengeti opens up before you — the infinite golden plain, the distant hills, the sense that you are entering one of the last great wildernesses on earth.

Day 3 — Full Day in Central Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

Driving distance

Full day game drives

Wildlife highlights

Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, hyena

Your first full day in the Serengeti. Morning game drive from 06:00 to 12:00 — the wildlife is most active in the cooler morning hours and your guide will follow the action wherever it leads. Predators are easier to find in the morning, as are the large herds of wildebeest and zebra that define the Serengeti ecosystem. Lunch back at camp. Afternoon game drive from 15:30 to 19:00, returning after sunset with a cooler box of cold drinks and stories from the day.

Highlight

A lion pride on a kill in the golden morning light — lions are most active at dawn and dusk, and the Serengeti has one of the highest lion densities in Africa.

Day 4 — Full Day in Northern Serengeti

Northern Serengeti

Driving distance

3–4 hours driving between areas

Wildlife highlights

Wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, lion, leopard, cheetah (Mara River crossings July–November)

Today you explore a different part of the Serengeti — moving toward the northern corridor where the Great Migration arrives from July to November. Even outside those months, the northern Serengeti is one of the most exclusive wildlife areas in Tanzania, with far fewer vehicles than the central areas. Your guide will choose the best route based on current wildlife distribution. Morning game drive to midday, lunch at a scenic spot in the park, then afternoon game drive. If you are visiting between July and November, today is when you aim for the Mara River crossing area.

Highlight

Wildebeest as far as the eye can see — the northern Serengeti in migration season is one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on earth.

Day 5 — Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater (via southern Serengeti)

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater

Driving distance

220 km, approx. 5 hours

Wildlife highlights

Lion, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest (seasonal), rhino (Ngorongoro)

A final morning game drive in the Serengeti from 06:00 to 10:00 — the last chance to enjoy the world's most famous wildlife park before you leave it. After breakfast, you begin the drive north and then west to Ngorongoro. Depending on the season, you may route through the southern Serengeti or Ndutu area — the calving grounds from January to March and a spectacular wildlife area at any time of year. Picnic lunch en route. Arrival at Ngorongoro rim in the mid-afternoon. Rest at your lodge before dinner — altitude sleep is different, but the cool air and extraordinary crater views are worth it.

Highlight

The descent into the Ngorongoro Crater at sunset — 600 metres straight down into a bowl that contains one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on earth.

Day 6 — Full Day: Two Game Drives in Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

Driving distance

Shuttle descents (25 min each way)

Wildlife highlights

Black rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingo (Lake Magadi), wildebeest, zebra

Ngorongoro Crater is unlike any other wildlife destination — a self-contained ecosystem inside the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera, home to approximately 30,000 animals including a resident population of black rhino. You descend into the crater twice: once at sunrise (06:30) and once in the afternoon (15:30). The morning descent in the first light is extraordinary — the crater floor is often shrouded in mist that burns off as the sun rises, revealing the wildlife below. The afternoon drive gives you different predator activity as the animals become active again. You exit the crater at 18:30 and drive back to your rim lodge for dinner.

Highlight

A black rhino with her calf on the Ngorongoro crater floor — the rarest and most endangered of the Big Five, and the crater is the most reliable place in Tanzania to see them.

Day 7 — Ngorongoro to Arusha (via Lake Manyara option)

Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

Driving distance

180 km, approx. 4 hours to Arusha

Wildlife highlights

Flamingo, lion, elephant (if not fully seen on day 6)

A shorter final game drive inside the Ngorongoro Crater from 06:30 to 10:00 — the early morning light on the crater floor is exceptional and predators are still active from the night's hunting. Breakfast at your lodge after the drive. Then you drive back to Arusha, approximately 4 hours. For those with afternoon or evening flights out of Kilimanjaro International Airport, we can arrange a day room at a comfortable Arusha hotel where you can shower, rest, and have lunch before the airport transfer. Alternatively, we can add a brief stop at Lake Manyara (famous for its tree-climbing lions and pink flamingo colonies on the lake shore) en route.

Highlight

Flamingos in their thousands on Lake Magadi inside the Ngorongoro Crater — a shimmering pink fringe around the soda lake at the crater's lowest point.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 5-day and a 7-day Tanzania safari?

The extra two days transform the experience. In a 5-day safari, you have one full day in the Serengeti — enough to understand the park, but not enough to truly explore it. In a 7-day safari, you spend three nights in the Serengeti with two full days — you can go deeper into different areas of the park, follow wildlife patterns across multiple days, and truly absorb the scale of the place. You also have more flexibility: if your guide hears about a leopard kill or a cheetah chase, you can spend the morning there rather than rushing to a schedule.

Is 7 days too long for a first safari?

Not at all — seven days is close to ideal for a first Tanzania safari. You have enough time to settle into the rhythm of game drives, to learn to read the landscape, and to experience the full range of what the Northern Circuit offers. The first two days feel like an introduction; by day 3 or 4 you are reading wildlife behaviour like a local. By day 6 or 7 you are noticing things your guide has to point out to other vehicles. That depth of experience is what makes a 7-day safari so rewarding.

How much does a 7-day Tanzania safari cost?

Our 7-day Northern Circuit safari starts at $2,400 per person based on two people travelling together. This includes all park fees, six nights of accommodation in quality lodges or luxury tented camps, a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-top roof, an expert guide for the full seven days, all meals during the safari, and all ground transfers from Arusha. Solo traveller pricing starts at approximately $3,400. Upgrading to luxury lodges adds $800–1,200 per person for the full trip.

Can I add Zanzibar to a 7-day Tanzania safari?

Yes — and it is one of the most popular combinations. After six days of wildlife-intensive safari, the white sand beaches and clear turquoise water of Zanzibar are the perfect decompression. The standard addition is 3–4 nights at a beach hotel in Zanzibar after the safari. Flying from the Serengeti or Arusha to Zanzibar takes approximately 90 minutes. We can arrange the beach extension as part of the same itinerary with seamless transfers.

What is the best time of year for a 7-day safari?

The dry season (June to October) is the classic time for a 7-day Northern Circuit safari — wildlife is concentrated, roads are in excellent condition, and the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti provides extraordinary drama from July to November. However, the calving season (January to March) is equally compelling: the southern Serengeti is alive with newborn wildebeest and predator action, and you will have a more intimate experience with fewer vehicles at each sighting. The green season (April, May, November) offers the best value with significant price reductions.

What is the safari itinerary for 7 days?

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire. Days 2–4: Central and Northern Serengeti (three full days). Day 5: Southern Serengeti or Ndutu (seasonal). Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater. Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater morning game drive, then return to Arusha. This gives you maximum time in the Serengeti — the heart of any Tanzania safari — plus the Ngorongoro Crater at both sunrise and sunset for two different perspectives on one of the world's most remarkable wildlife ecosystems.

What should I pack for a 7-day Tanzania safari?

Pack light and in neutral colours: khaki, brown, olive, and green clothing that blends into the safari environment. Avoid white and bright colours — they disturb wildlife. Bring a warm fleece or light down jacket for early morning game drives (it can be 5–10°C at 6am), a hat, good sunscreen, binoculars, a camera with extra batteries and a telephoto lens if you have one, and a power bank for charging in the vehicle. A small day pack for the safari vehicle is useful. We send a full packing list on booking. Most lodges offer same-day laundry.
