May 2026 · Planning · 12 min read
Tanzania Is a Year-Round Destination
The question is never “should I go to Tanzania?” — the answer is always yes. The real question is: what do you most want to experience? The Great Migration river crossings? Wildebeest calving season? Emerald-green landscapes with almost no other vehicles? A clear-sky summit of Kilimanjaro? Or warm turquoise seas and spice-scented air in Zanzibar?
This guide covers every month across all three experiences — safari, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar — so you can time your trip around your priorities, not someone else's.

Tanzania Safari by Month
Every month delivers something genuinely extraordinary. Here is the honest month-by-month breakdown.
☀️
January
Green Season
Wildlife
Peak wildebeest calving on the short-grass plains of Ndutu — southern Serengeti. Over 500,000 calves born within a few weeks. Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunting in extraordinary concentrations around the newborn herds.
Weather
Hot and dry. Daytime temperatures 25–30°C on the plains. Cooler at Ngorongoro Crater rim. Clear skies, long sunny days, excellent visibility.
Crowds
Moderate — school holiday crowds from Europe build towards the end of the month.
Verdict
"One of the finest wildlife months on Earth. The calving spectacle alone is worth the trip."
☀️
February
Green Season
Wildlife
Final peak of calving season at Ndutu. Predator action is extraordinary — lion, cheetah, and hyena working the dense concentrations of vulnerable newborns. Flamingos at Lake Ndutu at their most vibrant.
Weather
The driest month of the year. Temperatures regularly reach 32°C on the Serengeti plains. Low humidity and dust-free air make for perfect game viewing.
Crowds
High — UK half-term holidays bring a surge. Serious photographers dominate.
Verdict
"The finest month for predator sightings. Book four months ahead for the best camps."
🌧️
March
Green Season
Wildlife
Long rains begin. The green season takes hold as the Serengeti transforms from gold to emerald. Migratory birds arriving from Europe and Asia. Wildlife dispersing across the bush as fresh grass grows.
Weather
First rains arrive — usually afternoon and evening thunderstorms rather than all-day rain. Warm and humid (24–29°C). The landscape begins its dramatic transformation.
Crowds
Very low — one of the quietest months in Tanzania.
Verdict
"Best value of the safari calendar. Exceptional for photographers and return visitors."
🌧️
April
Green Season
Wildlife
Full green season. The Serengeti is lush and spectacular. Large elephant herds in Tarangire's riverine landscapes. Birding at its peak — over 550 species present. Leopard sightings can be exceptional in the denser cover.
Weather
Peak of the long rains. Afternoon thunderstorms followed by vivid sunshine. Temperatures 22–28°C. Some remote roads in Selous and Katavi become difficult.
Crowds
Very low — some remote camps close for the month.
Verdict
"The best-kept secret in safari travel. Incredible scenery, solitude, and the lowest rates of the year."
🌧️
May
Green Season
Wildlife
Rains tapering off. The Serengeti at its most visually stunning — vivid green, rivers running high, exceptional birdlife. Wildebeest consolidating in the western corridor ahead of the northern migration.
Weather
Transition month. Rain decreasing, humidity dropping. Temperatures 20–26°C. Late May marks the true transition into the dry season.
Crowds
Low — late May is one of the best-kept quiet periods.
Verdict
"A hidden gem. The best of the green season without April's heaviest rains."
☀️
June
Peak Season
Wildlife
Dry season begins. Wildlife concentrating around permanent water sources. Wildebeest herds mass in the western corridor and begin the Grumeti River crossings — underrated and spectacular. Excellent game viewing across all northern parks.
Weather
Drying out. Pleasant temperatures (18–26°C). Humidity dropping, clear skies returning. The landscape transitions from green back to gold.
Crowds
Building — school holidays in Europe still a few weeks away.
Verdict
"Great all-round month. Excellent value before peak pricing, good weather, fewer crowds than July."
☀️
July
Peak Season
Wildlife
Great Migration in full force in the northern Serengeti. Wildebeest cross the Mara River daily — sometimes multiple times a day. One of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth.
Weather
Dry and sunny. Clear skies every day. Temperatures 18–28°C on the Serengeti plains. The finest weather of the safari calendar.
Crowds
Peak — the northern Serengeti is busy at popular crossing points.
Verdict
"Iconic. The Mara River crossings are a genuine life-list experience. Book nine months ahead for the best camps."
☀️
August
Peak Season
Wildlife

Weather
Dry and sunny, occasionally cool (15–25°C). Lowest humidity of the year. Clear skies and excellent visibility.
Crowds
Peak — European summer holidays in full swing.
Verdict
"Fantastic wildlife but busy and expensive. Consider Tarangire and Lamai Wedge as quieter alternatives."
☀️
September
Peak Season
Wildlife
Often the finest month for Mara River crossings. Large herds still in the northern Serengeti. Last of the major crossing activity before the herds move south. Excellent predator density throughout the corridor.
Weather
Dry and pleasant. Temperatures rising slightly (20–30°C). Clear skies continue. The last month of the main dry season.
Crowds
High but slightly less than August — European school holidays end mid-month.
Verdict
"Our top pick for the Great Migration. Superb wildlife, great weather, slightly fewer vehicles than August."
☀️
October
Peak Season
Wildlife
Herd movement southward begins. Wildebeest leaving the northern Serengeti. Southern Serengeti receives the first arrivals. October is exceptional for elephant in Tarangire, which remains lush and green.
Weather
Dry season continues. Temperatures rise (25–32°C) — one of the hottest months on the Serengeti plains. Short rains typically begin late in the month.
Crowds
Decreasing — brief spike from UK half-term, otherwise moderate.
Verdict
"Excellent wildlife with better availability than July–September. A underappreciated month."
🌦️
November
Peak Season
Wildlife
Short rains usually arrive, transforming the southern Serengeti. Wildebeest arrive in the Ndutu area in enormous numbers — sometimes a unofficial second calving season. Spectacular photography conditions with dramatic skies.
Weather
Transitional. Afternoon or evening showers rather than all-day rain. Temperatures 24–30°C. The landscape begins to turn green again.
Crowds
Very low — one of the best-kept quiet periods in the safari calendar.
Verdict
"A hidden gem. Exceptional value — 30–40% lower rates, wildlife comparable to peak season, green scenery spectacular."
🌦️
December
Green Season
Wildlife
Wildebeest in the southern and central Serengeti. A magical time — green landscapes, newborn antelope, birdlife at its richest. Mahale on Lake Tanganyika is excellent — dry season on the lake.
Weather
Warm and variable. Short rains continue (typically afternoon showers). Temperatures 25–30°C. Christmas and New Year bring brief spikes in rain and crowds.
Crowds
Moderate to high around Christmas and New Year — early December is still quiet.
Verdict
"Christmas in the Serengeti is extraordinary. Book six months ahead for the festive period. Early December offers the best of both worlds."
Tanzania's Iconic Species
Best Time for a Big Five Safari
Lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — the Big Five are present in Tanzania year-round, but the best months to see each species vary significantly.
African Elephant
Peak: June – October
Tarangire in the dry season (June–October) has some of Africa's highest elephant concentrations — over 3,000 individuals. Lake Manyara also excellent May–November.
Pro tip: Early morning game drives in Tarangire before the heat drives them to shade.
African Lion
Peak: January – March
Ndutu in the southern Serengeti (January–March) offers extraordinary lion predation on wildebeest calves. The Serengeti's high lion density means sightings are near-guaranteed in any month.
Pro tip: Ask your guide about the large prides in the central Serengeti's Moru Kopjes.
African Leopard
Peak: June – December
Leopards are most easily spotted in the dry season when they spend more time on roads and in trees to escape the heat. The central Serengeti's Moru Kopjes and River Club on the Mara River are reliable territories.
Pro tip: Leopard sightings require patience — ask your guide to check the large sycamore figs along the Seronera river.
Cape Buffalo
Peak: June – October
Buffalo herds are most visible in the dry season when they congregate around permanent water. Large herds of 500+ are regularly seen in Lake Manyara and Tarangire.
Pro tip: Lake Manyara's alkaline flats near the lake edge attract enormous buffalo herds in the dry months.
Black Rhinoceros
Peak: June – October
Ngorongoro Crater holds Tanzania's highest rhino density — a genetically vital population of around 50 individuals. They are visible year-round but the short grass of the dry season makes spotting easier. The Crater floor is the most reliable place in East Africa for rhino sightings.
Pro tip: Spend a full day on the Crater floor. Early morning when mist lingers is prime rhino time — they are most active then.

Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to visit Tanzania?
There is no single best month — it depends on what you want. July to October offers the Great Migration river crossings. January to March offers calving season and fewer crowds. April, May, and November offer the best value with green scenery. January to March and June to October are best for Kilimanjaro climbing. September and October are best for Zanzibar.
When is the Great Migration in Tanzania?
The Great Migration is a year-round cycle. Wildebeest calve in the southern Serengeti around Ndutu from late January to March. The herds move north through the Central Serengeti in April to June. The dramatic Mara River crossings happen in the northern Serengeti from July to October. From November to January, the migration moves back south through the western corridor.
When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?
The best windows for climbing Kilimanjaro are January to mid-March (dry, stable, spectacular views) and June to mid-October (also dry, slightly busier). December has festive crowds, April and May are the wettest months on the mountain — beautiful but slippery. Rain gear and a reputable operator are essential regardless of season.
When is the best time to go to Zanzibar?
September and October are Zanzibar at its best — warm, dry, calm seas, and excellent visibility for snorkelling and diving. June to August is also excellent though busier. March to May brings the long rains — lush and romantic, but some boats and dive operators reduce services. November and December are transitional with occasional showers.
When is the cheapest time to visit Tanzania?
The cheapest time is during the green season — specifically April, May, and November. Safari park fees may be reduced, lodge rates can be 30–50% lower than peak, and there are far fewer tourists. The trade-off is occasional rain, some difficult roads in remote parks, and fewer services at some camps.
Is Tanzania good for safari in the green season?
Yes — the green season (November to May) is one of the best-kept secrets in safari travel. The Serengeti is spectacularly green, wildebeest are calving, bird migrants arrive from Europe and Asia, and the photography is extraordinary. Rates are significantly lower and the landscapes are beautiful.
