February is Zanzibar at its most postcard-perfect. With just 18mm of rainfall — the lowest of any month — and temperatures reaching 32°C, this is the month when the island delivers its clearest skies, its bluest water, and its most immaculate beaches. It is also one of the most popular months, which means higher prices and fuller resorts. But if perfect weather is your priority, February delivers it reliably.

February Weather — Why It Is Special

February is Zanzibar's driest month by a significant margin. While January averages 50mm of rainfall and March begins to see the transition into the long rains, February delivers just 18mm — typically as brief, isolated showers that rarely last more than an hour and often fall overnight. Day after day, the sky is blue, the sun is bright, and the ocean is an unbroken turquoise.

This is the month when the air is clearest, the light is most vivid, and the photography is at its best. The combination of minimal cloud cover, high sun angle, and calm seas produces the classic Zanzibar imagery that appears on travel magazines worldwide.

Water temperature peaks at 28–29°C — the warmest of the year. You can spend entire mornings in the water snorkelling, swimming, or on a dhow cruise without feeling cool. The trade winds are light, so the surface is calm and the boats do not rock.

The downside is that this is also peak demand. European half-term falls in February (UK and many European countries), and families with school-age children fill the beach resorts. Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast are the most affected. The east coast — Pingwe, Jambiani, and Paje — tends to remain slightly quieter.

Diving in February — Peak Visibility

February offers the best diving conditions of the year in the Zanzibar Channel. Water clarity is at its annual maximum — visibility regularly exceeds 40 metres, and on a good day at Mnemba Atoll you can see the reef drop away into cobalt blue from 30 metres away.

The marine life is excellent: reef sharks on the outer edges, schools of barracuda and giant trevally in the channel currents, and the ever-present turtles at Mnemba. February marks the tail end of whale shark season — December through March is when juvenile whale sharks feed in the channel, and February still offers good encounters, particularly on the north side of Mnemba Atoll.

For beginners, February's calm surface conditions make introductory dives more comfortable and confidence-building. For experienced divers, the visibility alone makes February special — you can see marine life at distances that are impossible during the plankton-rich months of March and April.

Why February Is Our Top Recommendation for Families

After 48 years of guiding families on Tanzania safaris, we recommend February more often than any other month for clients with school-age children. The weather is the most reliable of the year, the seas are calm enough for young swimmers, and the Ndutu region of the southern Serengeti is delivering some of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles of the entire year.

The combination works perfectly: 4–5 days on safari at Ndutu watching lion prides hunt wildebeest calves on the golden short-grass plains, then a direct flight to Zanzibar for 4–5 nights of beach time. The safari provides the adventure and wildlife education; Zanzibar provides the decompression and reward at the end. Children remember this combination for the rest of their lives.

February is also one of the better months for Jozani Forest, which is more accessible during dry weather. The boardwalk through the red colobus monkey habitat is easier to walk in dry conditions, and the swamp boardwalk at the end — where you sometimes see the rare Aders' duiker — is more manageable.

February Costs and Booking

February commands the highest rates of the year alongside July, August, and Christmas/New Year. Mid-range beachfront rooms are $100–200 per night. Luxury tented camps and boutique resorts run $250–450 per night. Top-end resorts with full board are $500–800 per night.

Booking windows: for February travel, December is the deadline for mid-range options. January bookings are possible but you will be choosing from what remains. If you are planning a February safari and Zanzibar combination, start talking to us by October at the latest.

Diving trips in February should be booked directly with your operator before arrival. Mnemba Atoll fills up quickly in peak season — a pre-booked morning dive is guaranteed; turning up on the day risks being disappointed.

Safari Combo — February Ndutu and Zanzibar

February is peak calving season at Ndutu in the southern short-grass plains of the Serengeti. This is where approximately 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day for six weeks — and where lions, hyenas, and cheetah concentrate to hunt them. It is arguably the most dramatic wildlife spectacle in Africa, and it happens in February.

A February Ndutu safari typically runs 3–4 days, staying at Ndutu or Kusini tented camps. From there, it is a 4-hour drive to Arusha, or a short flight to Zanzibar. The contrast — from the golden plains thick with newborns and predators, to the turquoise shallows of the Indian Ocean — is the kind of experience that defines a Tanzania trip.

February is Zanzibar at its most beautiful and its most popular. If you want guaranteed fine weather, excellent diving, and the island at its most vibrant, this is the month. The trade-offs are peak season pricing and higher volumes at the most popular beaches.

If you are combining with a Ndutu calving safari — which you should be if you are coming in February with any interest in wildlife — the combination is as strong as it gets. The safari gives you the drama; Zanzibar gives you the relaxation.
