After 48 years of guiding Tanzania safaris, we're often asked: should I do a balloon safari or stick with game drives? Our honest answer is — both if you can. But if you have to choose, the decision depends on what you value most.

Game drives are the backbone of any Tanzania safari. They're where you'll spend most of your time, where your guide reads animal behavior and positions you for the perfect sighting, where lions prowl past your Land Cruiser and elephants cross the road ahead of you. Game drives are active, adventurous, and deeply connected to the expertise of your guide.

Balloon safaris are something else entirely. There's no engine, no guide narration through a radio — just silence and the soft hiss of the burner as you drift above the plains. From 300 meters up, wildebeest herds look like dark ribbons on gold fabric. Hippos cluster in silver ponds. The Great Migration becomes an abstract painting of movement. It's serene, romantic, and unlike anything you'll ever experience.

Our recommendation: if your budget allows and you have the time, add the balloon safari. It's not a replacement for game drives — it's a complement. The balloon gives you that once-in-a-lifetime moment. Game drives give you the close-up wildlife encounters that make safaris addictive.

Can I do both a balloon safari and game drives on the same trip?
Absolutely — and we recommend it. The best Tanzania safari itineraries include both. A balloon safari offers a transformative aerial perspective of the Serengeti or Maasai Mara landscape, while game drives give you the close-up wildlife encounters that make safaris so thrilling. Many of our 7–10 day northern Tanzania itineraries include both activities, usually with the balloon safari on day 3 or 4 after you've settled into the safari rhythm.
Is a balloon safari safe?
Balloon safaris in Tanzania have an excellent safety record. The operators we work with are internationally certified and have decades of experience. Balloons are inspected daily, pilots are rigorously trained, and emergency protocols are in place. The biggest risk is weather — flights are cancelled if conditions aren't safe, which actually speaks to how seriously safety is taken. There is more risk driving to the launch site than in the balloon itself.
Which is better for seeing the Great Migration?
Game drives win for the migration's most dramatic moments — river crossings where thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters. Only game drives can position you at crossing points. However, a balloon safari offers an incomparable view of migration herds stretching across the plains as far as you can see — a bird's-eye perspective of the migration's scale that's impossible to appreciate from the ground. For the full migration experience, do both.
Are balloon safaris worth the extra cost?
For most travelers, yes. At $550–$650 per person, a balloon safari is a significant addition. But it offers something no game drive can: silence. Floating over the African plains as the sun rises, with nothing but the occasional whoosh of the burner, is a profound experience. The champagne breakfast afterward is also a highlight. If your budget allows and you can book in advance, it's a once-in-a-lifetime addition to any Tanzania safari.
What happens if my balloon safari is cancelled due to weather?
Most operators offer a full refund or rebooking. We always recommend booking your balloon safari for a day when you have flexibility in your itinerary, ideally with a rest day or backup game drive planned. If weather forces cancellation, you won't miss game drive opportunities — you'll simply do the game drive instead and rebook the balloon for another morning.
Can children do balloon safaris?
Most balloon operators require children to be at least 7–10 years old and meet a minimum height requirement (usually 120cm / 4 feet). This is for safety and comfort — younger children can find the early morning start and hour-long flight challenging. Game drives, by contrast, are suitable for all ages. For family safaris with young children, we recommend focusing on game drives and saving the balloon safari for when children are older.
