Tanzania Guiding
Two of Earth's Most Iconic Natural Experiences
Tanzania and Norway are not obvious comparisons — one is equatorial Africa, the other is the North Atlantic fringe of the Arctic. But both deliver experiences that are among the most powerful in global travel: the Great Migration and the Northern Lights.
Tanzania is the world's greatest wildlife destination: the Serengeti's endless golden plains, the thunder of the Great Migration, the ancient Ngorongoro Crater teeming with lions and rhinos. Combined with Kilimanjaro — Africa's highest mountain at 5,895m — it offers the most powerful double-adventure available in a single country.
Norway is one of Earth's most dramatically beautiful countries: the deep fjords of Geiranger and Nærøy, the Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic sky from September to March, the midnight sun that turns summer nights into golden twilight, and a Viking heritage that permeates the culture. It is also one of the world's most expensive and requires careful planning to experience well.
We have been guiding in Tanzania since 1978. Many of our guests have also explored Scandinavia. Both are extraordinary. The question is which belongs in your next journey.

Tanzania vs Norway — Key Differences
The Tanzania Case
Why Tanzania Is the World's Greatest Wildlife Destination
The Great Migration
The largest movement of land animals on Earth — 1.5 million wildebeest crossing rivers and plains over a 30,000 square kilometre ecosystem. Watching crocodiles take wildebeest at river crossings in July–November is primal and unforgettable. Norway has the Northern Lights — Tanzania has the Great Migration. Both are bucket-list natur phenomena, but the Migration involves thousands of live animals in motion.
The Big Five
Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and black rhinos — all reliably seen in Tanzania's Northern Circuit. Norway has excellent wildlife — moose, reindeer, Arctic foxes, humpback whales — but the scale and certainty of wildlife encounters in Tanzania is not comparable.
The African Landscape
Golden savanna stretching to the horizon, acacia trees at sunset, Kilimanjaro's snow cap above the plains. The Africa of imagination, delivered at a scale that still humbles first-time visitors. Norway's fjords and Arctic tundra are equally dramatic — but fundamentally different in character.
Kilimanjaro
The summit of Africa's highest mountain at 5,895m is one of the world's great achievable mountaineering goals. Norway's highest point, Galdhøpiggen at 2,469m, is a pleasant hike — not in the same category. Kilimanjaro is uniquely accessible as a first major high-altitude experience.

The Norway Case
Why Norway Is One of Earth's Most Dramatic Countries
Norway Has No Real Equivalent Anywhere
- ✦ Northern Lights — Aurora Borealis is one of the world's most magical natural phenomena
- ✦ Deep fjords — Geiranger and Nærøyfjord are UNESCO sites of extraordinary beauty
- ✦ Hurtigruten coastal voyage — the world's most beautiful sea voyage
- ✦ Midnight sun — 24-hour daylight in summer north of the Arctic Circle
- ✦ Lofoten Islands — perhaps the most photographed landscape in Scandinavia
- ✦ Viking heritage — living Norse culture, stave churches, and maritime history
- ✦ Excellent infrastructure — English widely spoken, easy for independent travel
Norway sits at the edge of the known world — literally, at the top of Europe where the North Atlantic meets the Arctic Ocean. The result is a landscape of almost absurd drama: fjords carved by glaciers 10,000 years ago, mountains that plunge directly into the sea, and a light that transforms everything it touches.
The Northern Lights — Aurora Borealis — are the single most magical natural phenomenon accessible without specialist travel. From September to March, solar activity lights up the Arctic sky with curtains of green, blue, and violet light. Standing in a frozen fjord with the aurora overhead is an experience that compares to nothing else on Earth. Tanzania has the Great Migration; Norway has the Northern Lights. Both are bucket-list experiences.
Norway is expensive — brutally so by European standards. But the infrastructure is excellent, English is widely spoken, and the experience justifies the cost for those who can afford it.
