Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara Safari

Tanzania's Most Compact Safari — and One of Its Most Surprising

At 325km², Lake Manyara is the smallest of Tanzania's major Northern Circuit parks — you can drive the main circuit in a morning. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in diversity. Tree-climbing lions, thousands of flamingos, a hippo pool with 200 residents, and a groundwater forest that feels like a different country entirely. This is a park that rewards the attentive visitor.

Many guests pair a Lake Manyara safari with Tarangire because the two parks sit close together but feel completely different: Manyara is compact, forested, and lake-focused; Tarangire is wider, drier, and elephant-led.

Why visit

Four Reasons Lake Manyara Deserves a Morning

🦁

Tree-Climbing Lions

Lake Manyara's lions are among the most famous in Africa for their unusual behaviour of resting in acacia trees. The behaviour is thought to be a cooling strategy and flood escape. Not every visitor sees them up trees — it depends on the season and where the pride is resting — but Manyara is one of the most reliable places in Africa to look for this behaviour.

🦩

Thousands of Flamingos

Lake Manyara's pink fringe — the flock of lesser and greater flamingos that line the lake shore — is one of the most beautiful sights in the Northern Circuit. The flamingos are present year-round but are most abundant during the wet season (November–June) when the lake level is lower and food is more concentrated.

🌿

The Groundwater Forest

The park's most distinctive feature is its groundwater forest — a lush, green strip of vegetation fed by underground springs from the Ngorongoro highlands. The forest is home to blue monkeys, bushbucks, and elephants, and creates an almost mystical atmosphere as you drive through it in the early morning mist.

🦛

Hippo Pool

Lake Manyara's main hippo pool holds up to 200 hippos, making it one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa. The pool is viewed from an elevated platform — you can watch hippos wallow, yawn, and jostle for position from a safe distance. It is one of the most accessible hippo sightings in Tanzania.

Four Ecosystems in One Small Park

The Lake Shore

The shallow alkaline lake covers approximately 200km² of the park's 325km² total area. During the wet season, the lake extends further into the plain; during the dry season it recedes, concentrating flamingos and other water birds. The lake fringe is where you will see the most spectacular flamingo displays.

The Groundwater Forest

A narrow strip of lush forest runs along the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, fed by springs from the volcanic highlands above. The forest is the most distinctive ecosystem in Manyara — dense, green, and cool — a world away from the open savannah of the Serengeti. It is best explored on foot via the designated walking trail.

The Acacia Woodland

The largest portion of Manyara's game-viewing area is acacia woodland — classic East African savannah with flat-topped acacias. This is where the tree-climbing lions are most often seen resting, and where giraffes, elephants, and impalas browse. The woodland also holds buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest.

The Hippo Pool

An elevated boardwalk leads to a viewing platform overlooking a deep pool where up to 200 hippos congregate. The platform is one of the park's most popular attractions — offering close views of hippos in the water with the Rift Valley wall as a backdrop. The pool is most active in the early morning and late afternoon.

What You Are Likely to See

Lion (Tree-Climbing)

Manyara's lions have been documented climbing trees since the 1950s. The behaviour is most commonly observed during the wet season when the floodplain is waterlogged. The lions climb into large acacia tortilis trees — often 4-6 metres off the ground — to rest. Sightings are not guaranteed but Manyara is the most reliable place in Tanzania for this behaviour.

Best season: Wet season (Nov–Jun) most consistent, but seen year-round

Flamingo

Lake Manyara hosts both lesser and greater flamingos — the lesser being the more numerous. The flocks can number in the thousands, creating a distinctive pink fringe along the lake shore. The best views are from the lake viewpoint near the main entrance.

Best season: Year-round, best November–June when lake level is lower

Hippo

The main hippo pool at Lake Manyara is one of the most reliably dense hippo concentrations in Africa. Up to 200 individuals use the pool, which is fed by freshwater springs. The viewing platform offers safe, close views from above.

Best season: Year-round — pool is permanent

Elephant

Manyara's elephants are part of the larger Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem — one of the most significant elephant populations in East Africa. They are most commonly seen in the groundwater forest and along the swamp edges. Manyara elephants are generally habituated and allow relatively close approach.

Best season: Year-round, but easier sightings in dry season (Jun–Oct)

Blue Monkey

The groundwater forest at Manyara is one of the best places in Tanzania to see blue monkeys. The troop is habituated and is often seen crossing the road or feeding in the forest canopy. They are most active in the early morning.

Best season: Year-round

Baboon

Lake Manyara has one of the largest troops of olive baboons in East Africa — troops of 200-300 individuals have been recorded. The troop is well-habituated to vehicles. Watching a large baboon troop move across the plain — males scanning for threats, mothers with infants, juveniles playing — is one of Manyara's most engaging wildlife experiences.

Best season: Year-round

Park Rules and Ethical Guidelines

No off-road driving

Like all Tanzania national parks, Lake Manyara enforces a strict no-off-road-driving policy. Vehicles must stay on designated tracks at all times. This is particularly important in Manyara's groundwater forest, where the soft ground is easily damaged.

Walking safaris require a ranger

The designated walking trail through the groundwater forest must be conducted with an armed ranger. This is arranged through your safari operator. Walking in Manyara's forest without a ranger is not permitted and is unsafe due to the presence of buffalo and elephants.

Lake viewpoints are shared

The main lake viewpoint near the entrance can get busy during peak season. We time our visits for early morning to avoid crowds and maximise wildlife viewing.

Flamingo nesting areas protected

The flamingo breeding areas on the lake shore are protected. Visitors are not permitted to walk to the lake edge — all viewing is from designated platforms and viewpoints. This is to protect the birds from disturbance during breeding season.

Itinerary ideas

How Lake Manyara Fits on the Northern Circuit

Lake Manyara is best visited as part of a multi-park Northern Circuit safari. Here is how we typically incorporate it:

Day 1

Arusha → Lake Manyara (morning game drive) → Ngorongoro (afternoon crater view or drive to conservation area). Overnight Karatu.

Day 2–3

Ngorongoro Crater (full day on the crater floor) → Serengeti (enter via Ndutu or eastern corridor).

Day 4–5

Serengeti full days — central Serengeti for predators and big cat action, northern Serengeti for river crossings season.

Day 6

Serengeti (morning) → drive back to Arusha via Ngorongoro, or fly from Serengeti airstrip.

Manyara also works as a half-day add-on at the start or end of a longer safari — it is only 2 hours from Arusha, making it accessible without eating into time at the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.

Questions About Lake Manyara

Why is Lake Manyara famous for tree-climbing lions?
Lake Manyara is one of the few places in Africa where lions have developed the habit of resting in trees. The behaviour is thought to have evolved as the lions escaped floodwater in the wet season and sought cooling breezes. Manyara is one of the most reliable places in Africa to see this behaviour, though sightings still depend on where the pride happens to be resting.
How much time do you need at Lake Manyara?
Most visitors spend 2-4 hours on a game drive circuit at Lake Manyara. The park is compact — the main road circuit is approximately 120km and takes 2-3 hours at a relaxed pace. Manyara is best combined with Ngorongoro Crater (1 hour away) in a single day.
Is Lake Manyara worth visiting?
Yes. Despite its small size, Manyara is one of the most diverse parks in Tanzania. It works best as part of a multi-park Northern Circuit safari alongside the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The tree-climbing lions, flamingo displays, hippo pool, and groundwater forest make it a worthwhile addition to any 5-day or longer itinerary.
What is the best time to visit Lake Manyara?
Lake Manyara works year-round. The wet season (November–June) is best for flamingos, the groundwater forest at its greenest, and tree-climbing lion sightings most consistent. The dry season (July–October) is better for general game viewing as animals congregate around permanent water sources.
How do you combine Lake Manyara with other parks?
Lake Manyara is ideally positioned on the Northern Circuit — approximately 1 hour from Ngorongoro Crater and 2-3 hours from the central Serengeti. Most itineraries visit Manyara on day one (on the way from Arusha toward Ngorongoro or the Serengeti) or as a half-day from Karatu. A typical 6-day itinerary might include: Arusha → Tarangire → Manyara → Ngorongoro → Serengeti → return.
Can you do Lake Manyara as a day trip from Arusha?
Yes — Manyara is approximately 2 hours from Arusha and is feasible as a half-day safari with an early start. This works well if you are heading to Ngorongoro or the Serengeti later in the day. A full-day combination from Arusha (Manyara in the morning, Ngorongoro in the afternoon) is also possible.
What is the park fee for Lake Manyara?
Lake Manyara National Park fees are $53.10 per person per day (plus a 20% VAT). Vehicle fees start at $30 per vehicle per day. These fees are included transparently in all of our safari packages — we do not add hidden charges after booking.
