Mikumi National Park is the Southern Circuit's best-kept secret — and the reason more travellers have not discovered it is simply logistics. The park sits just four hours from Dar es Salaam on sealed roads, making it far more accessible than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, yet it delivers wildlife viewing that rivals both. The Mkata River floodplain runs through the heart of the park, and it is here — on the open grassland visible from the main road — that Mikumi's lions stage their hunts in full view of patient safari vehicles.

The park shares an unfenced border with Selous Game Reserve to the south, and the two parks function as part of a contiguous ecosystem. Animals move freely between them. What Mikumi offers that Selous does not is infrastructure and accessibility — comfortable lodges, a compact game viewing area, and the ability to see exceptional wildlife in a short visit. For the traveller who wants the Southern Circuit without the challenge of remote logistics, Mikumi is the answer.

Why Visit Mikumi

Four Reasons to Go South

🦁

Habituated Lion Population

Mikumi's lions are among the most habituated in Africa. They have been studied for decades and are comfortable with the presence of safari vehicles, meaning you get extraordinarily close encounters — including lion kills on the floodplain, visible from the main road. There are few places in Africa where you are more likely to see lions hunting.

🚗

Four-Hour Drive from Dar

No flights needed. Mikumi is reachable by road from Dar es Salaam in four hours on good sealed roads. This makes it ideal for travellers with limited time, families who prefer not to fly, or anyone who wants a genuine safari experience without the logistics of the Northern Circuit. A Mikumi safari can be as short as two nights.

🦛

Mkata River Hippos

The Mkata River is home to one of Tanzania's largest concentrations of hippos. A morning game drive along the riverbank gives you close-up views of dozens of hippos in the water, grunting and jostling for position. The river also draws elephants, buffaloes, and waterbuck in substantial numbers.

🌿

Gateway to Selous

Mikumi's proximity to Selous Game Reserve — just two hours from the northern gate — makes it the ideal entry point for a Southern Circuit itinerary. Spend two days in accessible Mikumi, then continue south into the wilderness of Selous for an experience that few Tanzania visitors ever encounter.

Questions

Mikumi Safari FAQ

Why visit Mikumi instead of the Northern Circuit?
Mikumi offers exceptional wildlife viewing in a fraction of the time it takes to reach the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Located just 300 kilometres from Dar es Salaam — a four-hour drive — Mikumi is the most accessible major wildlife destination in Tanzania's Southern Circuit. The park borders Selous Game Reserve to the south, and the two can be combined in a single itinerary. Mikumi's main attraction is its population of lions, which are among the most habituated in Africa and regularly seen on kills. Add to this substantial elephant herds, hippos in the Mkata River, and giraffes crossing the floodplain, and you have a park that punches well above its weight.
How do you get to Mikumi from Arusha or Dar es Salaam?
Mikumi is uniquely accessible from both Dar es Salaam and Arusha. From Dar es Salaam, it is a four-hour drive on sealed roads — no flights required, making it ideal for travellers with limited time or those who prefer not to fly. From Arusha, it is approximately 8-9 hours by road, or you can fly to Dar es Salaam and drive. Most visitors access Mikumi by road from Dar, which is part of its appeal — it is a genuine safari without the logistical complexity or flight costs of the Northern Circuit.
What wildlife can you see in Mikumi?
Mikumi is best known for its lions — the park has one of the highest lion densities in Africa and they are exceptionally habituated to safari vehicles. You are almost guaranteed lion sightings here. The park also has substantial elephant herds, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and the hippos that give the Mkata River its reputation. Birdwatching is excellent with over 400 bird species recorded. The highlight for many visitors is watching the lion prides hunt on the open floodplain — a dramatic spectacle visible from the main road.
Can Mikumi be combined with Selous?
Yes — Mikumi and Selous are natural partners and can be combined in a 4-5 day itinerary. Drive from Mikumi to Selous' northern gate in approximately two hours (the road between the two parks is being upgraded). Spend 2-3 days in Selous doing boat safaris, walking safaris, and game drives, then return. This combination offers exceptional diversity: Mikumi's accessible wildlife viewing followed by Selous' deep wilderness experience.
What is the best time to visit Mikumi?
The dry season (June to October) is the best time for wildlife viewing in Mikumi. Animals concentrate around the Mkata River and its tributaries, making game drives highly productive. The wet season (November to May) brings green landscapes, newborn animals, and excellent birdwatching, particularly from November to March when migratory birds are present. Mikumi is accessible year-round — unlike some parks, the main game viewing roads remain passable even during the rainy season.
Is Mikumi suitable for a first safari?
Mikumi is one of the best parks in Tanzania for a first safari. The wildlife is reliable, the infrastructure is straightforward, the access is easy, and the park is compact enough that you can see excellent wildlife in a two-day visit without the fatigue of full-day game drives. The habituated lion population means you will almost certainly see lions. For someone who wants a genuine safari experience without the logistical intensity of the Serengeti, Mikumi is an ideal introduction.
