Northern vs Southern Circuit Tanzania
Two very different ways to see Tanzania's wilderness. Here is what actually differs.
When we first started guiding safaris in Tanzania, the question was simple: Northern Circuit or Southern Circuit? There was not much else. The parks were wild, the roads were rough, and the choice came down to logistics and time.
Today, Tanzania offers two genuinely distinct safari experiences, and the choice matters more than ever. The Northern Circuit — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire — is among the most celebrated wildlife destinations on earth. The Southern Circuit — Nyerere, Ruaha, Katavi — is what Africa felt like before the world discovered it.
Neither is better. They are different. And the travellers who love Tanzania most are often the ones who have done both — and cannot decide which they prefer.

The Classic Route
Northern Circuit
Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire
Best for: The Great Migration, Big Five, highest wildlife densities, most developed luxury camp infrastructure
Key Strengths
- The Great Migration — the world's largest wildlife spectacle, visible for approximately 9 months of the year
- Ngorongoro Crater — highest density of large mammals of anywhere in Africa, all Big Five commonly seen in a single day
- The most developed luxury camp and lodge infrastructure in Tanzania, with options across every budget tier
- Most international flight access via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), approximately 4 hours from the Serengeti
- The shortest and most accessible safari circuit — 5 to 8 days is sufficient for an excellent experience
- The greatest concentration of experienced, professional safari guides on the continent
Honest Considerations
- Can be crowded at peak season (July to October), particularly at Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint and popular Serengeti sighting points
- Premium pricing — park fees and accommodation costs are higher than the southern parks
- The classic Northern Circuit is well-trodden; finding genuine solitude requires private conservancies or fly-camping
Typical starting price: A well-designed Northern Circuit safari starts from approximately $3,200 per person for a 5-day circuit, rising to $8,000+ for ultra-luxury. Park fees are $71–82 per person per day.

The Remote Alternative
Southern Circuit
Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous), Ruaha National Park, Katavi National Park, Mahale Mountains
Best for: Remote wilderness, walking safaris, boat safaris, genuine solitude, off-the-beaten-path Africa
Key Strengths
- Extraordinary solitude — the southern parks receive a fraction of the visitors of the Northern Circuit, and it shows
- Walking safaris are the authentic highlight: Nyerere and Ruaha offer among the finest guided walking experiences in Africa
- Boat safaris on the Rufiji River in Nyerere provide a completely different wildlife perspective — hippo, crocodile, and waterbird concentrations
- Larger mammals in enormous, genuinely wild landscapes — Ruaha has one of the largest lion prides in Africa
- The fly-camping experience in Nyerere is genuinely remote: sleeping under stars in the bush, with only your guide for company
- Authentic wilderness — you will feel that you are the first humans to have visited the waterhole today
Honest Considerations
- Less accessible — internal flights or long road transfers are required, making the circuit harder to reach
- Fewer luxury accommodation options, and those that exist are more expensive per night due to logistics
- The Great Migration does not pass through the southern parks
- Road conditions in some southern parks can be challenging during the wet season (March to May)
- A minimum of 7 to 10 days is needed to do the Southern Circuit justice — it rewards longer trips
Typical starting price: Southern Circuit safaris typically cost more per night than Northern Circuit equivalents due to higher logistics costs. A 7-day southern circuit starts from approximately $4,500 per person. The added cost buys genuine wilderness.

The Third Option
The Best of Both: Combining Northern and Southern
The most rewarding Tanzania safaris we design are sometimes the ones that do not choose. A 10 to 14-day circuit combining the Northern and Southern parks gives you the Great Migration and the Crater in the north, then a wilderness fly-camp experience in Nyerere in the south. The contrast is extraordinary — from the drama and wildlife density of the Serengeti to the solitude and intimacy of the Rufiji River delta. The combination is more expensive and logistically more complex, but it is the circuit that our repeat safari clients most often request.
