Choosing Your Circuit
Northern vs Southern Tanzania Safari
Two circuits. Two entirely different Tanzanian safaris. After 48 years of guiding across both, here is our honest assessment of each.
Best for first-timers and the Migration
Northern Circuit
Iconic wildlife, the Great Migration, Ngorongoro Crater, and reliable infrastructure. The definitive Tanzania safari for first-timers.
Best for wilderness and solitude
Southern Circuit
Genuine remoteness, wild dog sightings, walking safaris, and fly camping. For those who havesafari'd before and want something real.
How they compare
Six factors, honestly assessed
| Factor | Northern Circuit | Southern Circuit |
|---|---|---|
| Wildlife density | Extraordinary. The Northern Circuit hosts the highest predator density in Africa. Ngorongoro Crater alone has the world's highest concentration of lions, hyenas, and the only reliable rhino sightings in Tanzania. | Remote and wild. Ruaha has Tanzania's largest elephant population; Selous/Nyerere offers wild dog, lions, and massive buffalo herds. Less dense but genuinely remote. |
| Great Migration | The Migration is entirely a Northern Circuit experience — the wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti, the river crossings in the northern Serengeti from July to October. | The Southern Circuit does not feature the Migration. Its wildlife viewing is consistent year-round but without the dramatic seasonal movement. |
| Crowd levels | Can be busy in peak season (June to October). Ngorongoro Crater has a high volume of vehicles, and popular Serengeti areas see significant traffic. However, private conservancies adjoining the Serengeti offer exclusive alternatives. | Spectacularly empty. Ruaha, Selous, Nyerere, and Katavi receive a fraction of the visitors of the Northern Circuit. It is not unusual to spend an entire day in Ruaha without seeing another vehicle. |
| Accessibility | Well-developed infrastructure. Arusha is a 3-hour drive to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro. Daily scheduled flights to Serengeti and Ngorongoro airstrips. Excellent lodge variety and established tourist services. | More remote. Access is primarily via light aircraft from Dar es Salaam or the Northern Circuit. Roads can be rough. Some camps are fly-in only. Requires more logistics and a longer overall trip. |
| Safari cost | A 7-day Northern Circuit safari starts from $2,800 per person in low season. Peak season (June to October) and premium camps bring this to $4,500-$7,000 per person. Park fees at Ngorongoro and Serengeti are $82.60 per person per day each. | Comparable or slightly lower per-day costs. Light aircraft flights between southern parks add $200-400 per flight per person. Remote camps can be expensive due to logistics. A 7-day Southern Circuit typically runs $3,000-$6,000 per person. |
| Best for | First-time safari-goers, Migration seekers, photographers, anyone wanting iconic wildlife encounters with reliable infrastructure. The Northern Circuit is the definitive Tanzania safari. | Repeat safari-goers, photographers seeking solitude, those with extra time, wilderness enthusiasts, and anyone wanting to escape the crowds entirely. Southern Tanzania is a different planet from the north. |

Why travellers choose the Northern Circuit
The Northern Circuit is the answer to the question: what is the greatest safari experience on Earth? It earns that title through the Great Migration, the Serengeti's extraordinary predator populations, and Ngorongoro Crater's unique concentration. For first-time safari-goers and Migration seekers, there is simply no alternative in Africa.
- The Great Migration — entirely within the Northern Circuit, 8 months of the year
- Ngorongoro Crater — the world's most concentrated wildlife area with reliable rhino sightings
- The Serengeti in all its forms — southern calving grounds, central permanent camps, northern crossing zones
- More accessible from Arusha — the safari gateway with the best flight connections
- Tarangire in the green season — enormous elephant herds and a quieter alternative to Ngorongoro
- The widest variety of accommodation across all price points and styles
- Easier logistics — roads, flights, and services are well-established
- Ruaha National Park — Tanzania's largest park, with 10-15% of the world's elephants
- Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) — vast, remote, genuine wilderness
- Katavi National Park — among the least visited major parks in Africa, hippo pools of extraordinary concentration
- Wild dog populations — Tanzania's Southern Circuit is one of the best places in Africa to track wild dog packs
- Walking safaris — the Southern Circuit is Africa's finest wilderness walking destination
- Fly camping — sleeping under the stars in genuine remote wilderness, available in the Southern Circuit
- No crowding — it is not unusual to spend an entire game drive without seeing another vehicle
Africa as it used to be
Why Tanzania insiders choose the Southern Circuit
The Southern Circuit is where Tanzania keeps its most profound safari secret. These vast wilderness areas — Ruaha, Nyerere, Katavi — receive a fraction of the visitors of the Northern Circuit. The wildlife is different: wilder, less habituated to vehicles, more genuinely wild. For those who have safar'd before, or who want to understand what Africa felt like before tourism, the Southern Circuit is an experience that cannot be replicated elsewhere on the continent.

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Which Tanzania safari circuit is better for first-time visitors?
The Northern Circuit is the clear choice for first-time safari-goers. It has the iconic wildlife experiences — the Great Migration, Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti — combined with reliable infrastructure, more accommodation options, and easier logistics. The Southern Circuit is extraordinary but requires more time, a higher budget for logistics, and benefits from prior safari experience to appreciate its wilderness qualities fully.
Can I do both the Northern and Southern Circuit in one trip?
Yes, but it requires 14+ days to do justice to both. The combination is spectacular — you experience the iconic Northern Circuit and then fly south to genuine wilderness. Most travellers who combine both describe it as the complete Tanzania experience. The logistics are more complex (multiple flights, more moving parts) but entirely manageable with an operator who knows both circuits intimately.
Which circuit has better wildlife viewing overall?
Northern Circuit has higher wildlife density and more reliable predator sightings, particularly in Ngorongoro Crater. Southern Circuit has lower density but a greater sense of wilderness and solitude. For sheer variety of species in a compressed area, Northern wins. For the emotional experience of being alone in wild Africa, Southern wins decisively.
Is the Southern Circuit more expensive than the Northern Circuit?
Not necessarily, but the logistics add cost. Flights between southern parks are expensive ($200-400 per person per flight), and the remote camps command premium pricing because everything must be flown in. On a per-day basis, the costs are comparable. A 7-day Northern Circuit and a 7-day Southern Circuit cost roughly the same at similar accommodation levels. The difference is that Southern requires more flight segments, which add up.
What is the best time to visit the Southern Circuit?
The dry season (June to October) is best for wildlife viewing in the Southern Circuit — animals concentrate around water sources. The green season (November to May) brings lush scenery, newborn animals, and excellent birding, but some roads become difficult. Fly camping is typically only available in the dry season. Katavi is at its most dramatic in the dry season when hippo pods concentrate in shrinking pools.
Which circuit is better for photography?
The Northern Circuit is better for iconic wildlife photography — predator action in Ngorongoro, Migration crossings, the dramatic Serengeti skies. The Southern Circuit is better for landscape photography and the intimate, contemplative photography of remote wilderness. If you want variety and those classic African safari images, Northern. If you want solitude and the rare opportunity to photograph wild Africa without another vehicle in sight, Southern.
Is it safe to do walking safaris in the Southern Circuit?
Yes — walking safaris in Tanzania's Southern Circuit are conducted by highly trained guides and are considered very safe. The guides carry radio communication and your vehicle meets you at designated points. Walking in big game country (which all safari areas technically are) always carries an inherent element of risk, but the professional standards in Tanzania's southern parks are high and incidents are extremely rare.
Which circuit is better for combining with Kilimanjaro climbing?
The Northern Circuit is the only practical choice for combining with Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro is accessed from Arusha, which is the gateway to the Northern Circuit. After a Kilimanjaro climb, adding a 3-5 day Northern Circuit safari is seamless — you're already in the right region. The Southern Circuit requires a flight from Arusha to the south, which is logistically possible but a significant detour after an already demanding Kilimanjaro climb.
