Southern Circuit Tanzania Safari

Tanzania's Wild South — And Why It Deserves Your Time

Fewer than 5% of Tanzania's safari visitors go south. This is remarkable when you consider what the Southern Circuit offers: hippo populations in their thousands, lion prides of over 200 individuals, some of the best wild dog sightings in Africa, and a sense of genuine wilderness that the Northern Circuit's popular areas simply cannot match. This guide covers everything you need to plan a Southern Circuit safari: the parks, how to connect them, and why after 48 years of operating Tanzania safaris, we still find the south the most rewarding.

Why the South

Four Reasons to Go South

🌍

Genuine Wilderness

The Southern Circuit receives fewer than 5% of Tanzania's safari visitors. In Katavi, you may drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. The sense of space and isolation is extraordinary — this is what African safari felt like before mass tourism.

🦁

Extraordinary Wildlife

The wildlife is as extraordinary as the Northern Circuit — lion prides of 200+, hippo populations in their thousands, wild dog packs, and large elephant herds. The difference is that you will not share your sightings with dozens of other vehicles.

🐘

Remote and Uncrowded

In the Northern Circuit, you share the best predator sightings with dozens of vehicles. In the Southern Circuit, your guide may be the only vehicle at a lion kill or a leopard in a tree. The wildlife experience is more intimate.

🌿

Completely Different from the North

The landscapes of the Southern Circuit are distinct — the miombo woodlands of Ruaha, the vast floodplains of Katavi, the limestone gorges of Udzungwa, the river systems of Nyerere. The Southern Circuit is not a pale imitation of the Northern Circuit.

The Five Parks

The Southern Circuit Parks

Ruaha National Park

Year-round, peak May–Dec

Tanzania's largest national park at 20,226 km² — larger than the entire Serengeti. Ruaha is defined by the Great Ruaha River, vast miombo woodland, and the transition between central and eastern Africa's wildlife. It is exceptional for lion (40+ prides), elephant, and wild dog. The park's scale means that even during peak season, you can spend hours in complete solitude.

Nyerere National Park

Year-round, peak Jun–Oct

Formerly Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere was renamed in 2022 and is Africa's largest game reserve at 50,000 km². It is defined by the Rufiji River — Tanzania's largest river — and its associated floodplains, forests, and channels. Nyerere is exceptional for wild dog (among the highest densities in Africa), lion, and boat safaris on the river.

Mikumi National Park

Year-round, peak Jun–Oct

The most accessible Southern Circuit park — easily combined with the Northern Circuit as an extension. Mikumi borders the Selous ecosystem and shares much of the same wildlife. It is particularly good for lion, zebra, and buffalo herds, and the nearby Udzungwa mountains offer a hiking and waterfall experience that contrasts with the safari.

Katavi National Park

Jun–Oct (dry season)

Tanzania's most remote major park, receiving fewer than 1,500 visitors per year. Katavi's floodplains and palm forests hold Tanzania's largest hippo population (4,000+ in the Katuma River), one of Africa's largest lion prides (200+ individuals), and elephant herds that can exceed 1,000. Access is by charter flight only.

Udzungwa Mountains

Year-round, best Jun–Mar

Udzungwa is not a safari park — it is a mountain national park famous for hiking, waterfall探索, and primate trekking (including the endemic Sanje mangabey). It is the perfect complement to a Southern Circuit safari, adding a completely different activity: walking in mountains rather than game driving.

Wildlife

What You Will See on the Southern Circuit

Lion

Year-round

The Southern Circuit has some of the largest lion prides in Africa. Ruaha has 40+ prides; Katavi has a documented pride of over 200 individuals. The open miombo woodland of Ruaha and the vast floodplains of Katavi make for exceptional lion viewing in a landscape that feels completely different from the Northern Circuit.

Elephant

Peak Jun–Oct

Elephant populations across the Southern Circuit are healthy and largely habituated to vehicles. Ruaha and Katavi have particularly large concentrations during the dry season, with herds of 500+ regularly observed.

Wild Dog

Year-round, best Jun–Oct

Nyerere (Selous) has one of the highest densities of African wild dog in Africa. These endangered animals are seen regularly in the reserve, with packs of 20-30 individuals. Ruaha also has a healthy wild dog population.

Hippo

Jun–Oct

Katavi holds Tanzania's largest hippo population — over 4,000 individuals concentrated in the Katuma River during the dry season. The hippo pools of Katavi are one of the great wildlife spectacles of Africa.

Cheetah

Year-round

Ruaha has a healthy cheetah population, and the open miombo woodland provides ideal habitat for these sprint hunters. Cheetah sightings in Ruaha are more reliable than in most Northern Circuit parks.

Bird

Year-round, best Nov–Apr for migrants

Udzungwa is one of Tanzania's best birding destinations, with over 400 species including the endemic Sanje mangabey and a variety of forest endemics. Nyerere's river systems host exceptional waterbird populations.

Questions

Southern Circuit Safari — FAQ

What is the Southern Circuit in Tanzania?
The Southern Circuit refers to Tanzania's southern parks: Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous), Mikumi National Park, Katavi National Park, and Udzungwa Mountains National Park. These parks are more remote, less visited, and offer a wilder safari experience than the Northern Circuit. They are characterised by vast wilderness areas, fewer vehicles, and a genuine sense of exploration.
Which is better — Northern Circuit or Southern Circuit?
They offer different experiences. The Northern Circuit is Tanzania's classic safari route — the Great Migration, Ngorongoro Crater, high wildlife density, and well-developed infrastructure. The Southern Circuit is wilder and more remote — fewer visitors, more space, and landscapes and wildlife that feel genuinely unexplored. Many experienced safari travellers consider the Southern Circuit the more rewarding experience precisely because of the solitude and sense of adventure.
How many days do I need for the Southern Circuit?
A minimum of 5 days for a single park (Ruaha or Nyerere). To combine multiple Southern Circuit parks, 10-14 days is ideal. Katavi alone requires at least 3-4 days (due to access logistics). The Southern Circuit is not a destination for a short trip — its remoteness rewards those who commit the time.
Can the Southern Circuit be combined with the Northern Circuit?
Yes — a Tanzania safari combining both circuits gives the most complete picture of the country's wildlife and landscapes. A typical combined itinerary might include 5 days in the Northern Circuit (Serengeti and Ngorongoro) followed by 4-5 days in the Southern Circuit (Ruaha and Nyerere). The combination requires 10-12 days total.
What is the best Southern Circuit park for first-time visitors?
Mikumi is the most accessible Southern Circuit park — it can be visited as a long day trip from the Northern Circuit or as a 2-3 day extension. Ruaha is the best choice for a dedicated Southern Circuit experience — excellent wildlife, good infrastructure, and manageable distances. Nyerere (Selous) offers the unique combination of game drives and boat safaris. Katavi is for experienced safari travellers who specifically seek remote wilderness.
Is the Southern Circuit safe?
The Southern Circuit is safe for tourists. The main safety consideration is its remoteness — medical facilities are far away and standard precautions apply. Hippos are dangerous if approached on foot (they are responsible for more human deaths in Africa than any other large animal). Walking safaris in Nyerere must be done with an armed guide.
How much does a Southern Circuit safari cost?
Southern Circuit safaris are typically more expensive than Northern Circuit equivalents due to the higher cost of internal flights (which are required to connect the parks practically). A 7-day Ruaha and Nyerere combination starts from approximately $3,500 per person. Adding Katavi increases costs significantly due to charter flight requirements. We provide transparent pricing based on your specific itinerary.
