Beyond the Northern Circuit
Southern Tanzania Safari
The remote parks that the northern circuit crowds never reach — and why reaching them changes everything about how you understand Tanzania.
Tanzania's southern parks — Ruaha, Selous, and Mikumi — receive a fraction of the visitors that the northern circuit does. They are harder to get to, less documented in international travel media, and require more days to incorporate properly. They are also, for many travellers who have done both circuits, the more rewarding experience.
The northern circuit is exceptional. The southern circuit is where Tanzania reveals its depth — the raw, uncommercialised side of a country that still has vast areas of genuine wilderness.
The Southern Parks
Four ways to access Tanzania's southern wilderness.
Ruaha National Park
Tanzania's largest park · 20,226 km²
Rugged, remote, wild. The park that feels like Africa before mass tourism.
Why it matters
- Tanzania's largest national park — bigger than Wales, with a fraction of the visitors
- Spectacular predator density: lion, leopard, cheetah, and the largest population of wild dog in East Africa
- The Great Ruaha River — dramatic waterfalls, hippo pools, and exceptional birding (570+ species)
Key wildlife
Best time: June–October (dry season), November–March (green season for birding and wild flowers)
Selous Game Reserve
Africa's largest wildlife reserve · 50,000 km²
Untouched. The feeling of being somewhere that has not been fully mapped by tourism.
Why it matters
- UNESCO World Heritage Site and Africa's largest game reserve — untouched by any roads running through it
- Exceptionally high hippo and crocodile concentrations in the Rufiji River
- Walking safaris permitted — the only way to experience Selous on foot
Key wildlife
Best time: June–October (dry season). Boat safaris best July–October when hippo pods are concentrated.
Mikumi National Park
The accessible southern park · 3,230 km²
Underrated. Mikumi gets less attention than it deserves — it connects easily to Ruaha for a two-park southern circuit.
Why it matters
- Direct road access from Dar es Salaam — the most logistically simple southern park
- Excellent wildlife viewing with relatively few visitors
- Hippo pools and floodplain habitat similar to the Serengeti but without the vehicle density
Key wildlife
Best time: June–October. Wet season (November–May) is green and beautiful with fewer visitors.
Mikumi and Ruaha Combination
The underappreciated circuit · 23,000+ km² combined
Two very different parks within a day's drive of each other — the contrast is the point.
Why it matters
- Mikumi's accessible floodplain wildlife, then Ruaha's remote wilderness — in one trip
- Mikumi is easy to reach from Dar; Ruaha is reached by air. Combine both by flying into Mikumi and out of Ruaha
- The two parks offer dramatically different ecosystems and wildlife experiences
Key wildlife
Best time: June–October for wildlife density. November–March for green landscapes and birding.
How to Do the Southern Circuit Right
What the guides who actually operate these parks know.
Fly where you can
The southern parks are remote. Internal flights from Dar es Salaam or Arusha to Ruaha and Selous are the practical way to access them. A light aircraft transfer between the northern circuit and southern parks takes 1–2 hours and gives you aerial views of the landscape that are part of the experience.
Combine the north and south
The strongest Tanzania itinerary combines the northern circuit with the south: Serengeti for the migration, Ngorongoro for the density, then Ruaha or Selous for the wildness. It is a complete picture of what Tanzania is. Allow 12–14 days minimum for a combined itinerary to feel unhurried.
Wild dog is the southern drawcard
Ruaha and Selous have the most reliable wild dog sightings in Tanzania. If wild dog is a priority, make Ruaha and Selous central to your itinerary rather than tacking them on at the end. The dogs are most visible June–October.
Walking and boat safaris are the point
The northern circuit is almost entirely game drive territory. Selous and Ruaha offer walking safaris — genuine, guided wilderness walks. Selous additionally offers boat safaris on the Rufiji River. These are categorically different safari experiences that cannot be replicated in the north.
