Tanzania in April
Long rains. Green landscapes. Lowest prices of the year. Almost no other vehicles.
April is the month most safari travellers avoid — and the month that keeps us recommending Tanzania to the people whose opinion we respect most. Yes, it rains. Yes, the landscapes are different from the golden plains of July. And yes, the trade-offs are real. But April in Tanzania offers something the peak season cannot: the country at its most beautiful, its most quiet, and — for those who plan correctly — its most affordable.
The long rains transform the Serengeti from golden savanna to an emerald wonderland. The air is fresh. The photography is extraordinary. The elephants of Tarangire are magnificent against dramatic April skies. And you will share every single sighting with almost nobody — April vehicle counts in the Serengeti are a fraction of peak season levels.
What wildlife you will see in April
Elephant Herds — Peak Season in Tarangire
April is one of the best months for elephant sightings in Tarangire. The park's permanent river becomes the focus of all animal activity as other water sources dry up or become inaccessible in the rain. Herds of 80–200 elephants are common. The ancient baobab trees look magnificent against dramatic April storm skies. Tarangire is April safari at its finest — and the almost complete absence of other vehicles means your guide can position you perfectly at waterhole sightings without competition.
Green Season Predator Viewing
April predator sightings in the central Serengeti are excellent. The long grass makes prey slightly harder to spot — which means predators must work harder and are more visible as they hunt. Lions are highly active and visible in the green grass. Leopards in the riverine forests are more active as prey is abundant. The trade-off with peak season visibility is real, but for experienced safari-goers who enjoy watching actual predator behaviour rather than just seeing animals at waterholes, April delivers.
Birding — Peak Migrant Season
April is the heart of the birding season in Tanzania. Palearctic migrants are at peak abundance — Steppe eagles, Yellow wagtails, Eurasian rollers, and dozens of other species overwintering in Tanzania. The wetlands around Lake Manyara and the Crater Highlands are exceptional. April is the month serious birders should target in Tanzania — the combination of resident and migrant species makes for extraordinary bird lists.
April Landscapes — Emerald & Dramatic
April landscapes are unlike anything you have seen in Tanzania photography. The normally golden Serengeti plains are an intense emerald green. The usually dusty air is crystal clear. Afternoon storm clouds build into dramatic towers over the acacia savanna. Photographers who visit in April often say the landscapes are the most beautiful they have photographed in East Africa. The light is soft and golden even at midday — unlike the harsh midday light of the dry season.
Weather, roads & getting around in April
Daytime High
Warm but pleasant. The cloud cover from afternoon rain keeps temperatures moderate — 25–29°C in the Serengeti. Less intense than the dry season heat. The soft overcast light of April makes for comfortable all-day game drives.
Morning Low
Mild mornings. No need for heavy layers. A light fleece is comfortable for pre-dawn game drives. The Ngorongoro Crater rim can be cooler — and wetter — than the crater floor.
Rainfall
April is the wettest month — but rain comes as afternoon storms, not all-day drizzle. Mornings are typically clear. Roads in some areas are significantly affected. 4WD vehicles are essential. Some remote areas may be temporarily inaccessible.
Road conditions in April
This is the critical April logistics consideration. The long rains make some roads difficult — particularly in the western Serengeti corridor, the southern circuit (Ruaha, Selous), and the Ndutu region. Standard 4WD with high clearance is essential. Your operator must have proper April logistics experience. The main northern circuit roads (Serengeti central, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) remain passable.
We strongly recommend fly-in combinations for April travel: flights from Arusha to the Serengeti or Tarangire bypass road conditions entirely and maximise your park time. Adding internal flights in April is the single biggest quality-of-safari improvement you can make for green season travel.
The April advantage — and the honest trade-offs
Price
April delivers the lowest safari prices of the year. A 7-day northern circuit starts from from $2,800 per person — compared to $4,200+ in January. This is 30–40% savings versus peak season. Premium lodges that charge $800–1,200 per night in January often charge $400–600 in April. April is the month to experience Tanzania's best properties at their most accessible prices.
Solitude
April vehicle counts in the Serengeti are a tiny fraction of peak season. You will share sightings with almost no one. Your guide can take you anywhere in the park without competing with other vehicles. For photographers and travellers who find peak-season crowds disappointing, April is paradise — the park feels entirely different when you have it almost to yourself.
The honest trade-offs
April is not for everyone. You should not come to Tanzania in April if:
- You are set on witnessing Great Migration river crossings — these happen July–October
- You need guaranteed dry weather — afternoon rain is a daily reality
- You have limited safari experience and want the most predictable conditions
- You are visiting Tanzania for a special occasion and cannot afford weather flexibility
A recommended 7-day April safari
Arusha to Tarangire — fly or drive. April in Tarangire is spectacular: massive elephant herds around the permanent river, ancient baobabs against dramatic skies, and almost no other vehicles in the park. Two full days here before the rains become more regular is the optimal April strategy. Stay at a quality camp on the park's edge for early entry.
Fly to the central Serengeti. April in the Seronera area offers excellent predator viewing — lions, leopards, and cheetahs are all active in the green season. The landscape is stunningly beautiful. The lack of other vehicles transforms the safari experience. Your guide can position you at sightings without the peak-season competition.
Drive or fly west to the Grumeti area. April is when the migration herds begin moving through the western corridor. While there are no dramatic crossings this early, large herds of wildebeest and zebra pass through the area. Grumeti Reserve offers excellent April wildlife viewing with far fewer visitors than the northern circuit.
Transfer to the crater rim. The crater is excellent in April — wildlife is abundant year-round on the crater floor, and the green season adds a different beauty to the dramatic enclosed landscape. Flamingos are present on Lake Magadi. Fly out from Kilimanjaro on day 7, or add a Zanzibar extension for beach time.
