August is Tanzania at its most spectacular — and its most demanding. The Great Migration has reached its northern extreme. Every morning, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest mass on the Mara River banks, assess the crocodiles in the water, and decide whether to cross. Some crossings involve 10,000 animals at once. Watching a wildebeest plunge into the Mara River, with crocodiles below and lions on the far bank, is the defining safari moment — and August is peak crossing season.
The trade-offs are real: August is peak pricing, peak crowds at the most famous crossings, and the coldest safari month in Tanzania. Mara River Crossings — The Main Event
August is the premier crossing month. The wildebeest herds have reached the northern Serengeti and are massed along the Mara River. Crossings happen daily — sometimes multiple times a day — from mid-July through October. The crossings are unpredictable: the herds may cross at dawn, midday, or late afternoon. A full day on the northern Serengeti banks gives you the best chance of witnessing this spectacle. The key is patience — and having a guide who reads the herds' behaviour.
Big Cat Action — Lions & Leopards
August predator activity in the northern Serengeti is exceptional. Lions follow the migration herds and are highly visible as they hunt exhausted wildebeest after crossings. The riverbanks and surrounding plains host large lion prides. Leopards are active in the riverine树林 of the Mara Triangle. The concentration of prey animals in the northern Serengeti in August makes for extraordinary predator viewing — both at the crossings and across the broader landscape.
Elephant Families — Northern Serengeti
August elephant herds in the northern Serengeti are at high density — the permanent Mara River and its tributaries are the focus of all animal activity in the dry season. Large herds of 50–100 elephants are common. The Lamai Wedge and the Mara Triangle offer excellent August elephant sightings. The combination of elephant herds, migration crossings, and predator activity makes the northern Serengeti the most wildlife-dense location in Africa in August.
Hippos & Crocodiles — Mara River
The Mara River's hippo pools are packed in August. Large numbers of hippos crowd the permanent pools, with Nile crocodiles of enormous size (some over 5 metres) lurking below. The crocodiles are what make the crossings so dangerous — and so spectacular. Watching the interaction between the crocodiles and the massing wildebeest herds from the riverbank is one of Africa's most dramatic wildlife photography opportunities.
Weather, roads & getting around in August
Daytime High
Warm but not hot — August is the coolest safari month in Tanzania. Clear skies and low humidity keep daytime temperatures pleasant. 24–28°C in the Serengeti. The midday heat is comfortable for extended game drives without the oppressive quality of peak-season heat.
Morning Low
Cold by Tanzania standards. Pre-dawn game drives in August require heavy layering — a warm fleece, jacket, and hat. 10–14°C on the crater floor at dawn. As the sun rises and the morning progresses, you will remove layers, but start with everything warm you own.
Rainfall
August is fully dry season — the driest month of the year. No rainfall. The landscapes are golden, wildlife is concentrated at water sources, and conditions are perfect for game driving. This is the peak season in every sense: optimal conditions for wildlife viewing across all Tanzania parks.
Road conditions in August
August road conditions are excellent — dry season conditions are at their peak and all northern circuit routes are easily passable. The road north from the central Serengeti to the Mara Triangle (via the Lamai Wedge) is a classic August game drive route. The western corridor is fully accessible. Standard 4WD vehicles handle all routes without difficulty.
Flying into the northern Serengeti (Kogatende Airstrip) is highly recommended for August — it positions you immediately in the crossing zone rather than adding a long drive from the south. Internal flights within Tanzania book up early in August and should be arranged when you confirm your safari.

Crowds & Beating Them
August is the most-visited safari month in Tanzania. The Mara River crossing points can have many vehicles at popular sighting locations. The key strategies for beating August crowds: book camps in the Lamai Wedge or Mara Triangle rather than the busier Kogatende area; be at the river by dawn when crossings are most common; use a guide who knows secondary crossing points away from the main congestion. A skilled guide who knows alternative river access points can transform your August crossing experience from crowded to private.

A recommended 7-day August safari
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to Arusha for the night. Use this day to rest after your international flight and meet your guide. Brief orientation and equipment check.
Fly to Kogatende Airstrip in the northern Serengeti. Three full days focused on the Mara River crossings. Your guide will position you at the best crossing points at dawn and monitor the herds throughout the day. Crossing activity can happen at any time — patience and positioning are everything. Between crossings, explore the Lamai Wedge for elephant herds and predator activity.
Drive or fly south to the central Serengeti (Seronera area). The central Serengeti in August has excellent resident wildlife — large lion prides that do not follow the migration are reliably seen, plus good leopard viewing in the riverine forests. Use these days to experience the diversity of the Serengeti beyond the migration crossing zone.
Transfer to the crater rim for a final morning game drive. The crater floor in August is excellent — lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and a reliable black rhino sighting opportunity. Fly out from Kilimanjaro in the afternoon.
