May in Tanzania — the last green of the wet season meets the golden onset of the dry months, with rolling savanna plains under a dramatic clearing sky

Tanzania in May

Green season fading. Few vehicles. Kili climbing at its best. Shoulder season pricing.

May is the secret season for Tanzania travel — and increasingly, the secret season for Kilimanjaro climbs. The long rains are winding down, the landscapes are still lush and green from the wet season, vehicle counts in the parks are at their lowest of the year, and the shoulder season pricing has not yet given way to peak season rates.

For safari travellers who want the green season beauty without April's full rainfall, May is the sweet spot. For mountain climbers, May represents the beginning of Kilimanjaro's most beautiful climbing window — snow-capped summits, flowing waterfalls, and excellent visibility. A combined safari-and-Kili trip in May is one of the most rewarding itineraries in all of East Africa.

What wildlife you will see in May

Green Season Predator Action

May predator sightings are excellent in the central and western Serengeti. The long green grass means predators are more active — lions and leopards are hunting more frequently as prey is distributed across the wider landscape. The lack of vehicles in May means you can watch actual predator behaviour without the interruption of competing safari vehicles. Leopard sightings in the Seronera riverine forests are particularly good in May.

Elephant Herds — Tarangire's Peak Season

May is one of the best months for elephant viewing in Tarangire. As the dry season begins to establish itself, the park's permanent river draws large herds. May vehicle counts in Tarangire are dramatically lower than any peak season month — you will often have large elephant sightings entirely to yourself. The park's landscapes are at their most beautiful in May — still green from the rainy season, with full baobabs and dramatic evening skies.

Birding — Late Migrant Season

May is still excellent birding season. Palearctic migrants are preparing for their return journey north — making May one of the last good months for Steppe eagles, Yellow wagtails, and other overwintering species. The Crater Highlands birding is exceptional in May. Lake Manyara's forest species are active and visible. Serious birders will find May a productive month in Tanzania.

First Dry Season Whimbrel — Southern Circuit

May marks the transition into the best wildlife viewing conditions for Tanzania's southern circuit parks — Ruaha and Selous. The wet season has ended, roads are drying out, and wildlife is beginning to concentrate around permanent water sources. May is an excellent month for a first visit to Ruaha, which is at its most beautiful and least visited in May.

Weather, roads & getting around in May

26°C

Daytime High

Pleasant and warm. The cloud cover from the retreating rainy season keeps temperatures moderate — 24–28°C in the Serengeti. May game drives are comfortable at any hour of the day, without the intense midday heat of the dry season.

16°C

Morning Low

Cool mornings — a light fleece is comfortable for early game drives. No need for heavy layers as you would in July. The Ngorongoro Crater rim can feel noticeably cooler, particularly if there is cloud or mist.

80mm

Rainfall

May rainfall is significantly lower than April — the long rains are winding down. Expect occasional showers, mostly in the first half of the month. By late May, the short dry season is establishing itself. Road conditions improve dramatically through the month.

Road conditions in May

Road conditions in May are significantly better than April. The main northern circuit routes (Serengeti central, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) are in good condition by early May. The western Serengeti corridor and Ndutu access roads dry out considerably through the month. By late May, standard 4WD vehicles handle all northern circuit routes without difficulty. The transition from April to May represents the biggest improvement in road conditions of any month-to-month transition in Tanzania.

For May travel, a fly-in combination remains recommended for the Serengeti to maximise park time, but by late May the road situation is comfortable enough that ground transfers are an excellent option for most of the northern circuit.

The May advantage — safari and Kilimanjaro

Safari Value

May is shoulder season — a 7-day northern circuit starts fromfrom $3,200 per person. This is 20–25% below peak January pricing. May vehicle counts in the Serengeti are dramatically lower than any peak season month — you will share sightings with almost no one. May safari quality is excellent; the price and crowd advantages are significant.

Kilimanjaro Climbing

May is one of the two best windows for climbing Kilimanjaro (the other being January–February). The mountain is at its most beautiful — lush green lower slopes, snow-capped summit, excellent visibility. The post-rainy-season waterfalls on the approach routes are flowing. May summit success rates are good. Combining a May Kilimanjaro climb with a May safari is one of East Africa's great multi-adventure itineraries.

A recommended 7-day May safari

Days 1–2Tarangire National Park

Arusha to Tarangire. May elephant aggregations in Tarangire are one of Tanzania's most reliable wildlife spectacles — large herds at the permanent river, beautiful green landscapes still lush from the rainy season, and almost no other vehicles. Two days here is the right amount for May — Tarangire at this time of year is exceptional value before the dry season brings higher vehicle counts.

Days 3–4Central Serengeti

Fly to the central Serengeti. May predator viewing here is excellent — the green season visibility challenges have largely passed, roads are drying, and wildlife is distributed but viewable. Leopard sightings in the riverine forests around Seronera are a particular May highlight. The green season beauty of the Serengeti in May is genuinely extraordinary.

Day 5Western Serengeti — Grumeti

Drive or fly west to the Grumeti Reserve. May is an excellent month for the western corridor — the migration herds are moving through the area, road conditions are manageable, and vehicle counts are extremely low. Grumeti offers excellent predator viewing and a very different landscape character from the central and northern Serengeti.

Days 6–7Ngorongoro Crater

Transfer to the crater rim. The crater is excellent in May — the short dry season is beginning, wildlife is concentrating, and the crater floor is beautiful in the transitional green season. May flamingo activity on Lake Magadi is good. Fly out from Kilimanjaro on day 7, or add a Kilimanjaro climb or Zanzibar extension.

This itinerary is available from from $3,200 per person. May is also excellent for combining with a Kilimanjaro climb — speak to our Arusha team about safari-and-Kili combinations.
