Tanzania in November
Low season. Short rains. Green landscapes. Calving begins. Best value of any month.
November is the safari traveller's best-kept secret. The short rains have transformed the Serengeti from parched gold to vivid green. Wildebeest are beginning to arrive in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region for the calving season. Afternoon thunderstorms roll across the plains, leaving the air fresh and the photography extraordinary. And the price — November is low season, which means the lowest safari rates of any month outside the long rains.
The honest trade-off is weather: November is wetter than October, with more pronounced afternoon storms. But the storms are short, the landscapes are genuinely beautiful, and the parks are almost empty. For experienced travellers who have done peak-season Tanzania and want to experience the green season — or first-timers on a budget who want maximum safari for their money — November is a remarkable month to visit.
What wildlife you will see in November
Wildebeest Calving — Beginning
Late November marks the beginning of the calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region. Wildebeest herds are arriving from the north, having completed their circular migration. By the last week of November, daily calving is underway — approximately 8,000 calves born daily during peak calving (January–February). Early November sees the first newborns and the predator activity that follows: lion, hyena, and cheetah hunting the vulnerable newborns.
Green Season Predator Action
November predator activity is excellent. The abundance of vulnerable newborns (even in early November) and the short green grass that makes hunting easier creates exceptional predator viewing. Lions are highly visible on the open Ndutu plains. Cheetah benefit from the clear visibility. Leopard sightings in the Moru Kopjes and along the Seronera River are reliable. This is predator Tanzania at its most active.
Elephant Herds — Tarangire
Tarangire is excellent in November. The seasonal pans and rivers are filling with the first rains, and elephant herds are on the move — feeding on the fresh vegetation that follows the rains. Large herds of 60–100 are common. The baobab forests are magnificent after the dry season, and the park is at its quietest in November. Tarangire in November is one of Tanzania's most under-rated wildlife experiences.
Birding — European Migrants
November is peak birding season in Tanzania. European migrants are still present before their spring departure. Yellow wagtails, steppe eagles, and Eurasian rollers are widespread. The Crater Highlands and Lake Manyara are particularly good for birding. The quality of bird photography in November — with the green landscapes and dramatic skies — is exceptional.
Weather, roads & getting around in November
Daytime High
Warm and pleasant. Cloud cover from afternoon storms softens the heat. No extreme temperatures. Comfortable game drive weather throughout.
Morning Low
Mild mornings without the cold of peak season. Light layers sufficient for early game drives. No heavy winter gear needed.
Rainfall
The short rains are in full effect — afternoon thunderstorms are common. Most storms are short (30–90 minutes) and occur late afternoon. Mornings are typically clear. Roads can be affected in some areas.
Road conditions in November
November road conditions require attention. The short rains have been falling for several weeks by November, which means some secondary roads — particularly in the southern Serengeti, western corridor, and southern circuit — may be temporarily impassable for 2WD vehicles. Your operator must use proper 4WD vehicles with high clearance in November.
Fly-in combinations are strongly recommended for November: fly from Arusha to the Serengeti's central or southern airstrips, bypassing the road conditions entirely. This removes weather as a variable and maximises your wildlife viewing time.
The November advantage: maximum safari for your money
Price
November is low season — the lowest pricing outside the long rains. A 7-day northern circuit starts from from $2,800 per person, compared to $4,500+ in July. Luxury properties offer their best rates in November — often 40–50% below peak season pricing. This is the month to stay at that camp you have been dreaming about at a price you can actually afford.
Last-minute bookings are often possible in November — sometimes even a week or two before travel.
Crowds
November parks are genuinely empty. Ngorongoro Crater may have 15–20 vehicles on the floor in early morning — compared to 50–80 in July. The southern Serengeti and Ndutu region have very few visitors. You may be the only vehicle watching a pride of lions or a leopard in a tree. This is private conservancy-level exclusivity at national park prices.
For travellers who want to feel the wilderness rather than share it with dozens of other vehicles, November is the month.
A recommended 7-day November safari
Arrive in Arusha, transfer to Tarangire. November is one of the park's finest months — quiet, beautiful, excellent elephant herds. The seasonal water sources are filling with the first rains. Two full days here allows you to experience the park at its November best.
Fly to the southern Serengeti airstrip. Three days focused on the Ndutu region and southern plains — the start of the calving season. By late November, wildebeest calves are appearing daily. Predator activity is exceptional as lion, hyena, and cheetah follow the herds. The green landscape is vivid and beautiful.
Transfer to the crater rim for a final morning game drive on the crater floor. November is one of the best months for clear views across the crater from the rim. Fly out from Kilimanjaro in the afternoon.
