Tanzania multi-country safari — combining the Serengeti with Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda

Multi-Country Safaris

Tanzania Multi-Country Safari

East Africa is Bigger Than One Country

Tanzania holds Africa's most iconic safari landscapes — but the Serengeti shares an ecosystem with Kenya's Maasai Mara, and a short flight from Arusha opens up Rwanda's mountain gorilla forests. A multi-country safari is the definitive East African experience, and after 48 years of operating across the region, we know exactly how to combine them without a wasted day.

Three Powerful Combinations

Choose Your East African Journey

The Great Migration, Both Sides

Tanzania + Kenya

The Serengeti-Maasai Mara is one ecosystem split by the Tanzania-Kenya border. The Great Migration moves back and forth across it continuously. Seeing both sides — the vast Tanzania plains and the more intimate Kenyan Mara — gives you the complete migration story.

Classic Safari + Mountain Gorillas

Tanzania + Rwanda

The most common premium combination in East Africa. After your Tanzania safari — lions, elephants, the Crater — you fly to Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and spend a morning with a habituated mountain gorilla family. It is one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth.

Safari + Chimpanzee Trekking

Tanzania + Uganda

Uganda adds chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the unique experience of tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. It is the more adventurous East African combination — less polished than Kenya, more immersive.

Practicalities

Visas, Flights & Getting Around

East African Tourist Visa

The $100 East African Tourist Visa covers both Tanzania and Kenya for 90 days. Most nationalities qualify. It is the simplest option for Tanzania + Kenya combinations.

Internal Flights

Arusha to Kigali (Rwanda): ~2 hours. Arusha to Entebbe (Uganda): ~2.5 hours. Nairobi to Kigali: ~1.5 hours. We book these flights as part of your itinerary and include them in the total price.

Border Crossings

Tanzania-Kenya land border at Namanga is straightforward with a local operator handling all crossing formalities. There are no overland borders between Tanzania and Rwanda — all Tanzania + Rwanda trips fly.

Why Combine Countries?

The Case for Going Beyond Tanzania

The Migration Crosses Borders

The Great Migration is not a Tanzania event — it moves between Tanzania and Kenya continuously. Seeing both sides gives you the full story.

Gorillas Are a Different Tier of Experience

No safari in Africa compares to an hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. It is the one wildlife experience that rivals — some say surpasses — a Serengeti lion hunt.

More Diverse, More Memorable

Three different ecosystems in one trip — savannah, forest, and mountain — creates a richer, more varied journey than any single-country itinerary.

Better for Serious Wildlife Enthusiasts

If you have the time and budget for 14+ days in Africa, multi-country is the upgrade that transforms a great safari into the definitive East African journey.

Questions

Multi-Country Safari FAQ

Can you visit Kenya and Tanzania on the same safari trip?
Yes — and it is one of the most rewarding ways to experience East Africa. The Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem straddles both countries, and you can cross between them by road or light aircraft. Most multi-country Tanzania safaris combine 3-4 days in Tanzania's Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro) with 2-3 days in Kenya's Maasai Mara. The combined trip typically runs 10-14 days.
Is it possible to combine a Tanzania safari with gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda?
Absolutely. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) or Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest) adds a genuinely different wildlife experience to a Tanzania safari. The logistics require an internal flight from Tanzania to Kigali (Rwanda) or Entebbe (Uganda) — about 2-3 hours flying time. A Tanzania + Rwanda gorilla combination is the most common pairing and takes 12-16 days total.
Which is better for the Great Migration — Tanzania or Kenya?
Both countries offer access to the Great Migration, but from different vantage points. Tanzania's Serengeti side covers 14,750 km², giving you more space and fewer crowds during peak season. Kenya's Maasai Mara offers easier access from Nairobi and a slightly different migration timing. A multi-country approach lets you experience both.
How much does a Tanzania multi-country safari cost?
A Tanzania + Kenya safari typically costs $4,500-$8,000 per person for 10-12 days. Adding gorilla trekking in Rwanda pushes the total to $7,000-$12,000 per person for 14-16 days. These figures include park fees, accommodation, guiding, and internal flights between countries.
Do I need separate visas for Tanzania and Kenya or Rwanda?
Kenya and Tanzania are both members of the East African Tourist Visa scheme, which covers both countries for $100 (for most nationalities). For Rwanda, you need a separate Rwanda visa ($50 for most nationalities) in addition to your Tanzania visa.
What is the best order for a Tanzania + Kenya or Tanzania + Rwanda combination?
For Tanzania + Kenya: start in Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro) then cross into Kenya's Maasai Mara for 2-3 days before finishing in Nairobi. For Tanzania + Rwanda: fly from Arusha to Kigali in about 2 hours, trek gorillas first (it is the most physically demanding), then fly or drive to Tanzania for your safari. This order ensures you are fresh for the gorillas before relaxing into the safari.
Is a multi-country safari logistically complicated?
Not if you work with a local operator who handles the logistics. We arrange all internal flights, border crossings, park fees, and accommodations across countries. The only extra document most nationalities need is an additional visa — and we guide you through the application process for each.
