Zanzibar turquoise water after a Tanzania safari across Serengeti and Ngorongoro

The classic Tanzania combination

Safari first. Zanzibar last. One country, two completely different rhythms.

A Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary works because the contrast is honest: lions at first light, crater-floor rhinos, and dusty Serengeti roads followed by dhow sails, Stone Town rooftops, and warm Indian Ocean water. The mistake is treating Zanzibar as an afterthought. Planned properly, it is the final chapter that makes the whole journey feel complete.

Our planning view

Do not buy a generic “safari + beach” package. Build the sequence around how you want to feel.

Some travellers want the famous version: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and four beach nights. Others need a slower family route, a honeymoon with one exceptional tented camp, or a Kilimanjaro summit stitched into the front of the journey. The right itinerary is not the one with the most stops. It is the one with enough space between the stops.

Magical Tanzania plans these routes from Arusha, not from a distant call centre. We can recommend camps across Tanzania, not just a fixed set of properties, and we show prices before asking you to enquire.

Quick answer

The best default is 12 days.

Two nights Arusha/Tarangire, one Ngorongoro, three Serengeti, one Stone Town, and four on the coast gives most travellers the best balance of wildlife, culture, and rest.

  • • 10 days if time is tight.
  • • 12 days if you want the trip to breathe.
  • • 14 days if this is the main journey of the year.

How we plan it

Four decisions that make the trip work

01

Start with the safari, not the beach

The wildlife route determines everything else: how many dawn starts you want, whether migration season matters, and whether you prefer lodge comfort or a more remote tented camp. Once the safari rhythm is right, Zanzibar becomes the soft landing at the end.

02

Fly from the bush to the island

The cleanest routing is usually Serengeti or Arusha to Zanzibar by scheduled light aircraft, often via Arusha or Dar es Salaam. We book the flight, luggage allowances, airport transfers, and the first island night so the change of pace feels effortless rather than logistical.

03

Choose the right Zanzibar coast

Nungwi and Kendwa suit easy swimming and sunsets. Paje and Jambiani suit long sand walks, village atmosphere, and kitesurfing. Stone Town is best for one or two nights of food, doors, rooftop views, and Swahili history before the beach.

04

Protect the final day

Do not over-schedule your last island morning. Zanzibar rewards a slow finish: breakfast by the ocean, one final swim, and a transfer timed with room to spare. We design the route so the trip ends calmly, not in an airport rush.

Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar FAQ

How many days do you need for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar?

Ten days is the shortest version that still feels complete: five safari nights, four Zanzibar nights, and arrival/departure time. Twelve days is more comfortable because it allows Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Stone Town, and the beach without rushing. Fourteen days is ideal for families or travellers who want a slower, more premium itinerary.

Should Zanzibar come before or after the safari?

We almost always recommend safari first, Zanzibar second. Safari days start early and carry the emotional intensity of wildlife tracking. Zanzibar works best as the recovery chapter: warm water, slower mornings, and time to absorb the week you have just had in the bush.

What does a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package cost?

A private 10-day safari and Zanzibar itinerary starts from $5,800 per person. A slower 12-day version usually starts from about $6,800 per person, while a complete 14-day itinerary with more premium camps starts from $7,800 per person. Season, lodge level, internal flights, and beach style can move the price up or down.

Can you combine Kilimanjaro, safari, and Zanzibar?

Yes. The best order is Kilimanjaro first, then safari, then Zanzibar. The climb is physically demanding; the safari keeps the journey moving; Zanzibar is the recovery. For Kilimanjaro route detail, use our sister site safarikilimanjaro.com, then we can connect the mountain to the safari and beach plan.

Which safari parks pair best with Zanzibar?

The Northern Circuit is the easiest fit: Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti connect cleanly to Zanzibar by scheduled light aircraft. Southern parks can also work beautifully, but flight routing through Dar es Salaam needs more care and usually suits longer trips.
