A small group safari in Tanzania — the best of both worlds: flexibility and shared cost

Small Group Safari

Tanzania Safari for Small Groups

The smart way to safari: small group, maximum experience.

A small group Tanzania safari — 2 to 6 people in a custom 4x4 Land Cruiser with a private guide — delivers most of the benefits of a private safari at a significantly lower cost. You get flexibility, personal attention, and a custom vehicle, without the premium cost of paying for exclusive private use. For friends travelling together, families, or couples who want to keep costs manageable, the small group format is the smart choice.

Why small group

The Case for Small Group Travel in Tanzania

The economics

When you share a safari vehicle and guide with 3–5 other travellers, the per-person cost of the guide and vehicle drops significantly. A private safari for two people costs approximately the same total as a small group safari for six — but the per-person cost for the group is dramatically lower. Small group safaris make premium guiding and custom vehicles accessible at a mid-range price point.

The flexibility

A small group safari in a custom 4x4 Land Cruiser can go where larger vehicles cannot. Your guide can adjust the itinerary based on wildlife sightings, weather conditions, and group preferences. Want to stay longer at a leopard sighting? In a small group, you can. In a large group with a fixed schedule, you cannot.

The camaraderie

Some of our most successful safaris have been small groups of friends or family who might not have travelled together before. The shared experience of a Tanzania safari — the early mornings, the wildlife sightings, the campfire dinners — creates a camaraderie that is difficult to replicate in any other setting. A small group safari is an opportunity to travel with people you know and create memories together.

The environmental argument

Six people in one vehicle creates significantly less environmental impact than two people in two vehicles, or twenty people in four minibuses. For travellers who care about the environmental cost of their travel, the small group format is the more responsible choice — more people per vehicle, fewer vehicles in the parks, less road wear, less fuel consumption per person.

Group size

How Many People in Your Group?

Group size

Just two

Two travellers in a custom 4x4. This is essentially a private safari — full flexibility, maximum guide attention, complete control over pace and itinerary. The per-person cost is higher because you are paying for the exclusive use of the vehicle and guide. Best for: honeymoon couples, travellers celebrating special occasions, those with specific accessibility needs.

Vehicle

Custom 4x4 Land Cruiser (maximum 6 passenger capacity)

Per-person cost

Full private rate

Best for

Couples, special occasions

Group size

Three to four

The sweet spot for most small group safaris. The per-person cost is significantly lower than a two-person private safari while maintaining excellent flexibility and guide attention. In a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-out roof, every person has a genuine window seat for game viewing. Four people in a vehicle is also more socially dynamic — there are enough people for interesting conversation and shared excitement, but not so many that the vehicle feels crowded.

Vehicle

Custom 4x4 Land Cruiser (max 6, typically 4 passengers for comfort)

Per-person cost

Shared cost, moderate per-person rate

Best for

Friends, families of 4, two couples

Group size

Five to six

Maximum practical group size for game viewing comfort. A custom 4x4 Land Cruiser can accommodate 6 passengers at a push, though 4 is more comfortable for game viewing (each with a window seat). At 6 people, you will typically add a second vehicle for game drives, which means two guides and two vehicles — effectively two parallel private safaris that travel together. The per-person cost at 6 travellers is the lowest of any small group format.

Vehicle

Two 4x4 Land Cruisers travelling together, OR one maxed-out Land Cruiser

Per-person cost

Lowest per-person cost in a small group format

Best for

Extended families, friend groups, group departures

Questions

Small Group Safari — FAQ

What is a small group safari in Tanzania?
A small group safari in Tanzania typically has 2–6 people travelling together in a custom 4x4 safari vehicle with a private guide. The key difference from large group safaris (15–20 people in minibuses) is that your vehicle is dedicated to your group, your itinerary can be adjusted based on wildlife sightings, and your guide's attention is on your party. Small group safaris deliver most of the benefits of a private safari — flexibility, personal attention — at a significantly lower per-person cost.
How much does a small group safari cost?
A small group safari at the mid-range level costs from $300–500 per person per day. At the premium level, expect $500–800 per person per day. These rates include quality tented camp accommodation, all meals, game drives in a custom 4x4, park fees, and a private guide. The per-person cost decreases as group size increases: 6 travellers in a group pay significantly less per person than 2 travellers for the same itinerary.
Do we have to share accommodation?
No — accommodation in a small group safari is typically booked on a twin/double room basis, not shared. Each couple or pair shares a room; solo travellers pay a single supplement for private accommodation. The group shares the game drive vehicle, but not the tents or lodges. Some budget-level small group safaris may involve shared accommodation at basic camps, but this is not the case at the mid-range or premium level.
What vehicle do small group safaris use?
The standard vehicle for small group safaris in Tanzania is a custom-built 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-out roof hatch (sometimes called a 'roofless' or 'pop-top'). These vehicles are specifically designed for wildlife viewing — the elevated roof allows standing height viewing from inside the vehicle, and the 4x4 capability allows access to more remote areas of the parks. All our small group safaris use this vehicle type, never minibuses.
Can we customise the itinerary in a small group safari?
Yes — one of the main advantages of a small group format over a scheduled group departure is itinerary flexibility. Because your vehicle and guide are dedicated to your group, the daily schedule can be adjusted based on wildlife sightings, weather conditions, and group preferences. If the guide hears of an exceptional leopard sighting 40 minutes off the planned route, you can go. If someone in the group wants a slower pace, the schedule can accommodate that. This flexibility is one of the key advantages of the small group format.
What if we are travelling alone and don't have a group?
Solo travellers are welcome on our scheduled small group departures — these are fixed-date itineraries where we combine solo travellers to make a group. If you are a solo traveller, you pay the standard per-person rate and we pair you with other solo travellers of similar age and interests where possible. The single supplement (the additional cost of having a room to yourself rather than sharing) is the primary extra cost for solo travellers on any Tanzania safari. Some of our scheduled group departures have no single supplement — ask us about these specific dates.
