Tanzania Visa Requirements

One Form, One Fee, One Unforgettable Trip

Tanzania's tourist visa is one of the simplest in East Africa — $50, available on arrival for most nationalities, and valid for 90 days. US citizens do not pay a fee. The main things to get right: a passport valid for 6 months, a yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic country, and USD cash in good condition for the fee. This guide covers every nationality, every visa type, and every detail you need to cross immigration without a hitch.

What You Need at Immigration

Passport validity

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned date of entry. At least one blank page for the visa stamp.

Yellow fever certificate

Required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country (including Kenya for some travelers). Tanzania may request it randomly from any traveler. Recommended: carry your yellow fever certificate regardless of origin — it is the single most commonly requested health document.

Proof of onward travel

Immigration officers may ask to see a return ticket or evidence of onward travel plans. A printout of your e-tinerary is sufficient.

Accommodation confirmation

Tanzania immigration occasionally asks for proof of accommodation bookings for your first night. Have your lodge or hotel booking confirmation accessible in your carry-on.

Visa fee (if applicable)

Carry USD cash in small denominations ($5, $10, $20 bills) for the visa fee on arrival. Cards are not always accepted at the immigration desk. Avoid torn or wrinkled notes — Tanzanian immigration officers have been known to reject damaged dollar bills.

Common questions

Visa Questions Answered

Can I get a Tanzania visa on arrival?
Yes — citizens of most countries (including UK, US, Canada, Australia, and all EU countries) can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Dar es Salaam Airport, Kilimanjaro Airport, and Zanzibar Airport. The cost is $50 for a single-entry tourist visa valid 90 days. Queues can be long during peak season (July–October, December–February). The Tanzania e-visa (applied for online before departure) is strongly recommended to skip the arrival queue.
How long does the Tanzania e-visa take to process?
The Tanzania e-visa is typically processed within 5–14 business days. During peak season it may take longer. Apply at least 3 weeks before your departure date. The approval comes as a PDF authorization letter — print this out and present it at immigration on arrival to receive your visa stamp without queuing.
Do US citizens need a visa for Tanzania?
No — US passport holders receive a 90-day tourist entry permit on arrival at no cost. This is not a visa but a stamped entry permit. Have your return ticket and accommodation details ready. You do NOT pay any visa fee. This provision is reciprocal under US-Tanzania travel agreements.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for Tanzania?
A yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country (including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and many other African nations). If you are traveling directly from Europe, North America, Australia, or New Zealand, a yellow fever certificate is not required but is strongly recommended. Some camps and lodges in Tanzania's national parks may request it. The vaccine is valid for life, so if you have it, carry the certificate.
Is the East Africa Tourist Visa worth it?
If your trip includes visits to Kenya, Uganda, or Rwanda alongside Tanzania, the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) is excellent value — it covers multiple entries across all four countries for 90 days. The catch: you must enter through Kenya (Nairobi) first, as the visa is administered through Kenya's immigration system. If your trip is Tanzania-only, stick with the standard $50 tourist visa.
Can I extend my Tanzania tourist visa?
Yes — Tanzania tourist visas can be extended for an additional 90 days at the immigration office in Arusha or Dar es Salaam. The extension costs approximately $100–$200 depending on nationality. You must apply before your original visa expires. For most safari and climb travelers, 90 days is more than sufficient.
What happens if my passport is from a country not on the visa-free list?
If your country requires a visa in advance, you must apply through the Tanzania embassy or consulate in your country before departure. Processing times vary. Contact the nearest Tanzanian diplomatic mission for specific instructions. Visa on arrival is not available for nationalities marked for advance visa requirements — arriving without one will result in denial of entry.
Do children need a Tanzania visa?
Yes — all nationalities including children require a Tanzania tourist visa regardless of age. There is no child exemption. Each child traveling must have their own passport with a valid visa or entry permit. Families should factor visa costs for all children when budgeting a Tanzania trip.
