While the world watches July's dramatic Mara River crossings, April delivers migration action of its own — the Grumeti River crossings through the Western Corridor, massive herds moving through a landscape so green it looks like a different planet from the dry-season plains, and some of the finest predator viewing of the year. Add dramatically lower prices, far fewer visitors, and the kind of dramatic thunderstorm skies that photographers travel the world for, and April becomes one of the most compelling — and undervalued — months in the Serengeti calendar.

What to Expect in April
The Grumeti River Crossings
The Grumeti River is the first major river the migration encounters on its northbound journey — and the crossings here can be just as dramatic as the famous Mara River events, with a fraction of the crowds. The river runs through a beautiful, remote landscape of riverine forest and open plains. Nile crocodiles wait in the deeper pools. Lions and hyenas line the banks. Watching thousands of wildebeest surge into the Grumeti — the water boiling with bodies, the sound of hooves and splashing carrying across the plains — is an extraordinary wildlife experience.
The Green Season
April sits in the short rains season — but this is no ordinary rainy season. The rain comes as dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that build over the plains through the day, crackle with lightning, and clear to reveal some of the most beautiful skies you will ever see. The Serengeti in April is impossibly green, the grass is tall and vivid, wildflowers carpet the plains, and the light has a quality that professional wildlife photographers travel the world to find. The landscape feels alive in a way the dry season never does.
Predator Density
April is one of the finest months for predator viewing in the Serengeti. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs follow the migration herds — drawn by the easy pickings of vulnerable individuals. The green season concentrations of prey mean predators are well-fed and active. Leopard sightings in particular are excellent in April, as the tall grass and riverine habitat of the Western Corridor provides perfect leopard habitat. A morning game drive in April can deliver lions on a kill, leopards in riverine forest, and cheetahs on open plains — all in a single day.
Fewer Crowds
April is shoulder season — a fraction of the visitors of July-October. The Western Corridor in particular is almost empty of other vehicles. Your game drives feel private and exploratory rather than competitive. The lack of crowds also means camp availability is excellent even 2-3 months ahead, and the experience feels more authentic and immersive — you and your guide, reading the wildlife, following the herds, with the vast Serengeti largely to yourselves.

Where to Stay in April
Western Corridor (Grumeti River Area)
The heart of the migration in April. The Grumeti River crossing points and the surrounding Western Corridor plains offer the best migration viewing. Several excellent tented camps are positioned here during the season. This is remote, exclusive wildlife country — far from the crowds of the northern Serengeti.
Central Serengeti (Seronera)
The central Serengeti is excellent in April — migration herds pass through on their way north, while resident wildlife (leopards, lions, cheetahs) remains strong year-round. Seronera has the best infrastructure and the most accommodation options. Good combining with Western Corridor.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
A perfect complement to a Western Corridor migration safari. Ngorongoro Crater has excellent resident wildlife year-round — lions, elephants, flamingos on the lake — and is dramatically beautiful in the green season. The crater floor is less affected by April rain than surface roads elsewhere.
