What to Expect in August
The Peak Crossings
August is when the Mara River crossings reach their peak frequency and scale. The herds have massed in their thousands on both banks, and the crossings become almost daily events. Unlike July, when crossings are more sporadic, August sees multiple crossings per day across different points along the river. The scale can be staggering — thousands of animals surging into the water simultaneously, the river churning with bodies, crocodiles thrashing, and the sound of tens of thousands of hooves filling the air. This is the most concentrated and dramatic crossing period of the entire migration cycle.
The Kenya Border Region
In August, the migration straddles the Tanzania-Kenya border. The herds move fluidly between the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara, and experienced guides follow the movement rather than staying fixed. This creates the unique opportunity to witness the migration in two countries — Tanzania's wilder, quieter northern Serengeti on one day, Kenya's famous Masai Mara on the next. Each ecosystem offers a different character: the Serengeti is rawer and more remote; the Mara is more accessible but more crowded.
Predator Concentration
August draws predators from across the region. Nile crocodiles — some over 18 feet long — wait in the deeper pools of the Mara River. Lions, hyenas, and leopards concentrate along the banks and in the surrounding plains, feeding on the weak and exhausted that survive the crossing. The predator density around the crossing points in August is extraordinary — you may see multiple lion prides, large hyena clans, and crocodiles queued up along the riverbanks, all waiting for the next surge of wildebeest.
The Setting
The northern Serengeti and Masai Mara in August are at their most beautiful. The long rains have ended, the landscape is a vivid, deep green, the skies are clear and blue, and the temperature is comfortable — warm days, cool nights. The grass is tall enough to hide wildlife, creating those classic savannah scenes of animals moving through golden stalks. The long shadows of early morning and the golden light of late afternoon make August one of the mostphotographed months in the Serengeti.

Where to Stay in August
Lamai & Kogatende (Northern Serengeti)
The two most reliable crossing areas in the Tanzanian Serengeti during August. Lamai is closest to the main crossing points; Kogatende is slightly quieter but still excellent. Both offer front-row seats to the migration spectacle with a fraction of the Masai Mara's vehicle density.
Mara North Conservancy
A private conservancy adjacent to the northern Serengeti. Much lower vehicle density than the national park, exclusive game drives, off-road driving permitted, and some of the best crossing points in the ecosystem. The best option for travellers wanting a luxury, exclusive experience away from peak-season crowds.
Masai Mara (Kenya)
The Masai Mara offers world-renowned crossing viewing, particularly in the Mara Triangle. The infrastructure is more developed than the Serengeti, with a wider range of accommodation. August in the Mara means concentrated herds, dramatic crossings, and a very different safari atmosphere from Tanzania.
