Why Visit Arusha National Park

Most Tanzania safari itineraries rush past Arusha on their way to the Serengeti. This is a mistake. Arusha National Park is the most varied and active of Tanzania's safari parks — you can be on foot, in a canoe, and in a vehicle within a single day. For first-time visitors who want to understand Tanzania's landscapes before heading to the major parks, or for returning visitors who want something different from the conventional game drive, Arusha rewards more than any other park of its size.

Walk Where Vehicles Cannot Go

Arusha is one of only two Tanzania national parks where walking is permitted without special concessions. The guided walking safari brings you to eye level with colobus monkeys in the forest canopy, to tracking buffalo in the grasslands, and to experiencing the smaller wildlife — birds, insects, plants — that vehicle safaris never reveal. The forest trails of Arusha are some of the most rewarding walking country in East Africa.

Mount Meru as Your Backdrop

The 4,456m summit of Mount Meru rises above the park, its volcanic caldera visible from almost everywhere on the park floor. At sunrise, the mountain catches the first light while the park below is still in shadow — one of the most dramatic mountain silhouettes in Tanzania. For photographers, Arusha with Mount Meru in the frame is a composition that the flatter Serengeti cannot match.

Canoe with Hippos

A canoe on Momella Lake places you at the waterline with hippos — literally at eye level with the largest mammals in the park. The lakes are calm, the birdlife is prolific (kingfishers, herons, African fish eagles overhead), and the experience is unlike anything else available in Tanzania's national parks. The canoeing is available June through February and is suitable for all fitness levels.

The Logical Safari Start

Arusha National Park is 25km from Kilimanjaro International Airport and 15km from Arusha town. Most international flights land in the early morning; Arusha is an ideal first activity before your main safari begins. A half-day visit to Arusha on arrival day means you are already 'in the bush' before you head to the Serengeti — and you will understand the landscape, the light, and the rhythms of Tanzania before the main experience begins.

Wildlife in Arusha National Park

Arusha is not a Big Five park. Its wildlife is diverse but not dense in the way the Serengeti is.

Masai Giraffe
Common
Seen throughout the park on open savannah
Cape Buffalo
Large herds
Especially concentrated near Ngurdoto Crater
Flamingo
Seasonal
Hundreds on Momella Lakes, November–June
Black-and-white Colobus
Present
Best seen on walking safaris in the forest
Hippopotamus
Present
Momella Lakes and small crater lakes
Warthog
Common
Often seen in family groups
Plains Zebra
Present
Found in open grassland areas
Bushbuck
Present
Forest-dwelling antelope, shy and elusive

Note on Big Five: Arusha National Park does not hold black rhinos and elephants are rarely seen. Lions are present but uncommon. The park should not be your primary Tanzania Big Five destination — save that expectation for Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Arusha is best understood as a complement to those parks, not a competitor.

What You Can Do in Arusha National Park

Game Drive

3–4 hours

A circuit of the park's savannah, forest, and lakeshore habitats. Giraffes, buffaloes, and warthogs are reliably encountered. The highlight is the Ngurdoto Crater viewpoint — a collapsed volcanic crater surrounded by forest — and the Momella Lakes circuit where hippos wallow and waterbirds gather. Early morning drives are most productive for wildlife activity.

Best Time
Early morning, year-round
Cost
Park fee $25/person + vehicle fee

Walking Safari

2–4 hours

A guided walk with an armed TANAPA ranger through the park's forest and grassland. This is a fundamentally different experience from being in a vehicle — you hear, smell, and feel the bush up close. Black-and-white colobus monkeys are best seen from the walking trails. The forest zone reveals a side of Tanzania that vehicle-based safaris miss entirely.

Best Time
Morning, dry season preferred
Cost
Included in park fee + tip for ranger

Canoeing on Momella Lake

2 hours

Paddle a canoe on the calm waters of Momella Lakes, sitting at eye level with hippos and water birds. This is one of the most unusual and memorable safari activities available in Tanzania — you are in a canoe, on a lake, in a national park, with hippos beneath you. No experience is necessary. The canoeing is available June through February; the lakes are highest after the short rains (November–December).

Best Time
June–February
Cost
$40–60 per person

Mount Meru Climb

3–4 days

Mount Meru (4,456m) is Tanzania's second-highest peak and one of Africa's most rewarding climbs. The route passes through forest, heath, and alpine desert zones before reaching the summit crater rim at sunrise. The climb is 3-4 days and significantly less crowded than Kilimanjaro. It is best done 1-2 days before a Kilimanjaro climb for altitude adjustment, or as a standalone adventure for those who want a serious mountain experience without the Kili crowds.

Best Time
June–February (avoid April–May long rains)
Cost
$350–500 per person with guide and permits

Is Arusha National Park Right for Your Safari?

Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania's most polarising parks — some visitors rate it as the highlight of their trip; others feel it is a half-day afterthought. The difference is almost always about itinerary fit.

Arusha is ideal if you:

  • Have 4+ days on your Tanzania safari
  • Arrive early morning at Kilimanjaro Airport and want an immediate activity
  • Want a walking safari experience
  • Are a photographer (especially birds and Mount Meru landscapes)
  • Are combining a Mount Meru climb with your safari
  • Have already done the Serengeti and want something different
  • Enjoy active travel — canoeing, hiking, varied activities

Consider skipping Arusha if you:

  • ·Are on a tight 2-3 day safari focused on the Big Five
  • ·Have no interest in walking, canoeing, or non-game-drive activities
  • ·Are visiting Tanzania primarily for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro and want to maximise days there
  • ·Expect to see elephant and rhino — you won't in Arusha
  • ·Are on a very tight budget and every day of safari costs matter

Arusha + Kilimanjaro: The Natural Combination

Arusha National Park and Mount Meru are most commonly combined with a Kilimanjaro climb. The logic is compelling: Arusha is 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and Mount Meru is a genuine high-altitude trek that builds fitness and adaptation at altitude without the intensity of Kili's summit push. A 3-day Mount Meru climb followed by a Kilimanjaro climb is one of the best preparation sequences available — and Arusha's wildlife activities provide active rest between the two summit attempts.

Day 1
Arrive, game drive + canoe
Day 2
Mount Meru climb begins
Day 4-5
Descend, rest day
Day 6-13
Kilimanjaro climb begins

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Arusha National Park known for?+
Arusha National Park is best known for three things: spectacular views of Mount Meru (Tanzania's second-highest peak at 4,456m), the Momella Lakes with their seasonal flamingo populations, and the opportunity for walking safaris and canoeing — experiences unavailable in most other Tanzania national parks. The park is also the most accessible Tanzania safari park from Kilimanjaro International Airport, making it a natural first or last day on any Northern Circuit safari.
Is Arusha National Park worth visiting?+
Yes — but it depends on your overall safari. If you have 4 or more days for safari, Arusha is an excellent half-day or full-day addition to your itinerary. If you are on a tight 2-3 day safari, skip it and spend that time at Tarangire or the Serengeti. The walking safari and canoeing are genuinely unique Tanzania experiences. The park is not a Big Five destination — if rhino and elephant sightings are your priority, Arusha will disappoint. But for photographers, birders, and those who want an active, varied safari experience, it is one of Tanzania's most rewarding parks.
Can you see the Big Five in Arusha National Park?+
No — Arusha National Park does not have black rhinos and elephants are rarely seen. You can see buffalo, lion (present but not common), and leopard (present but very elusive). The park is not managed as a Big Five destination. If seeing all Big Five members is your goal, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are far more reliable. Arusha should be seen as a complement to the major parks, not a replacement.
What is the best way to explore Arusha National Park?+
The best Arusha experience combines all three activities: a morning game drive to the Ngurdoto Crater viewpoint and Momella Lakes circuit, followed by a guided walking safari in the forest zone, and if time allows, a canoe ride on Momella Lake. Each activity reveals a different side of the park. The walking safari is particularly special — it is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can legally walk in a national park with an armed ranger, getting close to colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and forest birds that vehicles cannot reach.
How much does an Arusha National Park safari cost?+
Arusha National Park fees are approximately $25 per person per day for non-resident visitors. A half-day visit with a guide and private vehicle typically costs $150-250 per person. A full-day visit including a walking safari and canoeing typically runs $250-400 per person. These costs are in addition to your overall safari logistics. Arusha is almost always visited as part of a multi-day Northern Circuit safari rather than as a standalone trip.
Can Arusha National Park be combined with Kilimanjaro climbing?+
Absolutely — this is one of the most common and effective combinations in Tanzania. Mount Meru (4,456m) in Arusha National Park is a superb acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. A 3-4 day Mount Meru climb burns and builds fitness at altitude without the intensity of Kili's summit push. Many climbers use Arusha as their first Tanzania experience: arrive, spend a day on game drive or canoeing, climb Mount Meru for 3 days, then proceed directly to Kilimanjaro. It is a logical and rewarding sequence.
