Wildebeest Migration Calendar — Where the Herds Are, Every Month of 2026

April 2026 · Migration Guide · 12 min read

The Great Migration — nature's most predictable spectacle

Two million wildebeest follow the rains in a continuous clockwise circuit through Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara. The route is predictable. The timing is not. This calendar tells you where to be and when.

The migration is not a single event — it is a year-round movement of approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by 300,000 zebra and 150,000 gazelle. They move in search of fresh grass, following the rainfall patterns of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. What makes the migration extraordinary is not just the numbers — it is the fact that the route is ancient, predictable, and visible to anyone who knows where to look. The herds are always somewhere. The drama is always happening. You just need to know where.

Best camps

premium Serengeti lodge, Kubu Kubu, Tambua Plains

April

Remote, green, exceptional birdlife

Western and central Serengeti

Peak green season. The herds graze on the long-grass plains of the western corridor. Rivers are full and green. Beautiful but some roads may be impassable.

Best camps

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp, premium Sabora-style camp, Kirawira

May

Grumeti crossings — less crowded than Mara

Western Serengeti (Grumeti)

The herds mass along the Grumeti River — a precursor to the Mara River drama. Hippo pools, crocodile-lined banks, and dramatic pre-crossing behaviour. Much quieter than the Mara crossings.

Best camps

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp, premium Sabora-style camp, premium Grumeti camp

June

Rutting behaviour, Lamai Wedge beauty

Northern Serengeti / Lamai Wedge

The herds begin their northern push. The landscape changes to rocky kopjes and acacia woodland. Rutting season — wildebeest battles are frequent and dramatic.

Best camps

Lamai Serengeti, Mara Mara, Nomad Serengeti

July

Early crossings, remote and wild feeling

Northern Serengeti / Kogatende

The herds mass at the Mara River. First crossings begin, though peak is August-September. The northern Serengeti is magnificent — remote, wild, with few vehicles.

Best camps

Lamai Serengeti, Wilderness Camps Lamai, Asanja Moru

August

Peak Mara River crossings

Northern Serengeti / Mara River

Peak crossing month. Thousands cross daily. The action is concentrated and intense — crocodiles, thrashing water, desperate sprints. The most dramatic wildlife spectacle in Africa.

Best camps

Lamai Serengeti, Mara Mara, premium Klein's-style camp

September

Continued crossings, Masai Mara crossover

Northern Serengeti / Masai Mara (Kenya)

Crossings continue — the herds now push into the Masai Mara. Leopard sightings in the acacia groves are frequent. The northern Lamai Wedge is spectacular.

Best camps

Naboisho Camp, Mara Plains, Ol Seki Hemingways

October

Return crossings, excellent game viewing

Northern Serengeti / Masai Mara

The herds begin their return south. Some crossings still occur. The Masai Mara is at its finest — warm weather, clear rivers, excellent game.

Best camps

Lamai Serengeti, Governors' Camp, Sanctuary Olonana

November

Green season, short rains, very few tourists

Northern to central Serengeti

The migration moves south through the central Serengeti. Secondary rains may begin. The landscape is green and fresh. Much fewer visitors than October.

Best camps

premium Serengeti lodge, Serengeti Pioneer Camp, Sayari Camp

December

Return of calving, green plains

Southeastern Serengeti / Ndutu

The herds return to the short-grass plains for calving season. December calves begin. The plains are green from the short rains. A wonderful time to visit.

Where the Drama Happens

River Crossings — Grumeti and Mara

🌊

Grumeti Crossings (May–July)

Western Serengeti · Best: May–June

Less famous than the Mara but equally dramatic. The Grumeti River crossings happen in the western Serengeti corridor and attract far fewer visitors. Hippos watch from the banks, crocodiles wait below.

🌊

Mara River Crossings (July–October)

Northern Serengeti / Lamai Wedge · Best: August–September

The iconic crossings. When the herds reach the Mara River — which spills from the Mau Escarpment in Kenya — they must cross to reach the Masai Mara grazing. The crossings are dangerous: crocodiles, fast current, steep banks. When 300,000 animals need to cross in a few weeks, the result is extraordinary.

Planning Notes

How to See the Migration Well

Book 8–12 months ahead for peak season

August-September crossings book out 12 months ahead at the best camps. Lamai Serengeti, Mara Mara, and premium properties fill first. If you want to see the river crossings, plan your safari a year in advance.

Build in flexibility — nature does not keep a schedule

The migration follows rainfall and grass growth. Crossings can happen any time July-October. A skilled guide who reads the herds and understands the timing is worth more than any predetermined itinerary. Build in at least 3 full days in the crossing areas.

Northern Serengeti vs Masai Mara — you do not need Kenya

The Mara River crossings are accessible from the northern Serengeti. Lamai Camp and Mara Mara are on the Tanzania side, directly overlooking the key crossing points. You do not need to cross into Kenya to see the most dramatic moments.

Consider the Ndutu option for calving season

January-February in the Ndutu area (southeastern Serengeti) offers arguably the most emotionally intense wildlife experience of the entire migration cycle. Eight thousand calves born daily, with predators in close attendance. It is raw, extraordinary, and far less visited than the crossing areas.

Common Questions

Wildebeest Migration FAQs

Where are the wildebeest in January?

In January, the herds are in the southeastern Serengeti — the short-grass plains between Naabi Hill and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area boundary. This is calving season: approximately 8,000 calves are born every day during the peak. Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas follow the herds. The plains are green and beautiful. This is one of the best times for predator action.

When do the river crossings happen?

The famous Mara River crossings happen from late July through October, with peak activity in August and September. The crossings are unpredictable — a herd may wait at the riverbank for hours or even days before committing. When they go, hundreds of thousands cross in a cascading stampede that can last 30 minutes to several hours. Timing a crossing requires patience and a good guide who reads the herds.

What is the difference between the Serengeti and Masai Mara migration?

The migration moves between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara. The herds spend approximately 9 months in the Serengeti (Tanzania) and 3 months in the Masai Mara (Kenya). The Tanzania side covers a larger area and has more varied terrain. The Masai Mara is smaller but has the dramatic Mara River crossings. A Tanzania-only safari still sees the full migration cycle — the Mara River crossings are accessible from the northern Serengeti.

Can I see the migration year-round?

Yes — because the migration is a continuous clockwise circuit, there are always wildebeest somewhere in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. You will never find the Serengeti empty of wildebeest. However, the density varies enormously. January offers the most dramatic predator action. July-October offers the iconic river crossings. November-December offers the southern plains return. Each season has a distinct character.

Is the migration guaranteed?

The migration is one of the most reliable wildlife spectacles on earth. The herds move in response to rainfall patterns and grass growth — which follows the seasons predictably. Even in drought years, the migration continues; it may compress into smaller areas, but the animals follow the same routes. What changes is the density at specific points and the exact timing of river crossings.
