Experienced, licensed pilots
All Tanzania balloon safari pilots hold commercial hot air balloon licenses and have a minimum of 500 flight hours before conducting tourist operations. They train twice yearly and are recertified annually. The Serengeti Balloon Safaris company — the oldest in Tanzania, operating since 1993 — employs only pilots with extensive East African experience.
Pre-flight safety briefing
Before every flight, passengers receive a thorough safety briefing covering boarding procedure, landing positions, what to do if the burner malfunctions, and emergency procedures. This is mandatory and typically takes 10 minutes.
Weather monitoring
Balloons do not fly in unsafe conditions. High winds, thunderstorms, or poor visibility result in cancellation or postponement — no exceptions. This is actually a positive: when you do fly, conditions are perfect. Pilots monitor weather continuously from the evening before.

Wake-up call
Your guide wakes you at camp with tea or coffee delivered to your tent. You dress warmly — it is cold at 5am at altitude — and meet in the camp lobby. The stars are often still visible.
5:00–5:30 AM
Drive to the launch site
Your safari vehicle drives you to the balloon launch site — typically a 20 to 45 minute drive depending on your camp's location. The Serengeti at this hour is extraordinary: the half-light, the sounds, the sense that the whole bush is waking up.
5:30–6:00 AM
Watch the inflation
This is part of the experience in itself. The ground crew unfolds the envelope — the coloured balloon — and fans begin to fill it with cold air. Then the burner fires, heating the air, and the balloon rises upright. It takes about 20 minutes and it is surprisingly dramatic — the roar of the burner overhead, the size of the balloon becoming real.
6:00–7:00 AM
The flight
One hour of silent, drifting flight over the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Your pilot uses subtle altitude changes — rising to catch a thermal, descending to get closer to wildlife — to navigate. Champagne breakfast on the plains
Landing in an open plain, you find the ground crew already there — a proper table set with white linen, a full breakfast, and a bottle of sparkling wine chilling in a bucket. The food is excellent: eggs made to order, bacon, fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt. This is not a gimmick — it is a genuine, high-quality meal in one of the most extraordinary settings on earth.

Game drive back to camp
Your safari vehicle meets you after breakfast. The game drive back to camp is always remarkable — the plains look entirely different after the balloon flight, almost more vivid.
