Arusha — Safari Gateway Guide

Arusha is the city that safari travellers pass through without thinking about twice — and that is exactly what makes it worth pausing in. Sitting at 1,400 metres on the southern slopes of Mount Meru, it is East Africa's most convenient safari hub: an hour from Kilimanjaro Airport, two hours from Tarangire, three from Ngorongoro, and five from the Serengeti.

Most travellers arrive the night before their safari, sleep in a comfortable hotel, and leave early the next morning without giving Arusha a second look. Those who stay a day or two discover a city with a strong cultural fabric, excellent coffee, a bustling market, and some of the best street food in East Africa — all backdropped by Mount Meru's volcanic cone.

The Safari Hub

Why Every Tanzania Safari Starts in Arusha

Arusha's location is no accident. The city grew as a colonial administrative centre and has evolved into the unofficial capital of Tanzania's safari industry. Every major operator maintains a base here. The city's altitude (1,400m) makes its climate noticeably cooler and more comfortable than Dar es Salaam on the coast.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — the main arrival point for international safari and climbing travellers — is 50km east of Arusha. Most visitors land, spend the night in Arusha, and depart early the next morning for their safari or climb. The city is also a natural stop-off point for those combining a safari with a Kilimanjaro climb.

Arusha National Park

The closest park to Arusha (45 min). Canoeing on Momela Lakes, walking safaris, and views of Mount Meru. Often overlooked — a mistake, as it offers excellent birding and buffalo encounters.

Coffee Plantation Tour

Half day

Tanzania's coffee is exceptional, and Arusha is surrounded by coffee farms. A tour of a working plantation — picking, processing, and tasting — is one of the most memorable half-day activities available.

Mount Meru Trek

3 days

Often called 'Kilimanjaro's little brother,' Mount Meru (4,566m) is Tanzania's second-highest peak. The 3-day trek is less crowded than Kili, with dramatic views and alpine scenery.

Cultural Heritage Centre

2–3 hours

Arusha's premier arts and crafts market. The best place in Tanzania to buy Makonde carvings, Maasai jewellery, Tanzanite gems, and woven textiles. Bargaining is expected and welcomed.

Shanga Footbridge

2 hours

A social enterprise employing people with disabilities to create art and crafts. Beautiful riverside setting, excellent handmade items, and superb Tanzanian coffee at the cafe.

Tarangire Day Trip

Full day

118km from Arusha, Tarangire is one of the most rewarding day trips available. Its elephants, baobab forests, and wildlife concentrations make it a serious contender alongside the more famous parks.

Eat & Drink

Where to Eat in Arusha

Arusha's restaurant scene punches well above its size. The city has a large expatriate community — UN staff, NGO workers, and safari operators — which has supported a range of excellent restaurants that would not survive in a smaller city.

For street food, the Central Market area comes alive in the evening with stalls selling mishikaki (grilled meat skewers), chipsi mayai (chip and egg omelette), and freshly squeezed mango juice. This is real Tanzanian eating — cheap, delicious, and atmospheric.

Common Questions

Arusha Safari Gateway FAQ

How many days should I spend in Arusha?

Most travellers spend 1–2 nights in Arusha before or after a safari. One night is usually sufficient if you are heading straight to the Northern Circuit parks. Two nights is better if you want to explore the city, visit a coffee plantation, or take a day trip to Arusha National Park or Mount Meru.

Is Arusha safe for tourists?

Arusha is generally safe for tourists in the main tourist areas, hotel districts, and around the central market during daylight hours. Like any developing-world city, petty theft and opportunistic crime exist. Stay in tourist-oriented neighbourhoods, avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, and use registered safari operators for all excursions.

What should I buy in Arusha before a safari?

Arusha has excellent markets for safari essentials: quality mosquito repellent, long-sleeve lightweight clothing, a headlamp, batteries, and motion sickness tablets. Prices are significantly lower than at hotels or airports.

Can I do a safari from Arusha in one day?

A full-day safari from Arusha is possible to Arusha National Park (closest, 45 minutes) or Lake Manyara (2 hours each way). However, a real Northern Circuit safari to Serengeti or Ngorongoro requires a minimum of 2 days.

What is the best time of year to visit Arusha?

Arusha is a year-round safari gateway. The dry season (June–October) is most popular for combining with Northern Circuit safaris. The green season (November–May) sees fewer crowds and lower prices. Temperatures are mild year-round at Arusha's altitude of 1,400m.
