Balloon Safari Tanzania: Costs, What to Expect & Best Time

The aerial safari experience

A balloon safari over the Serengeti costs $450–$599 per person

This one-hour flight — silent except for the occasional burst of the burner — gives you the only perspective from which the Serengeti makes complete sense. From the air, you see the river crossings you have read about, the migration herds moving as a single organism, and the crater floor of Ngorongoro as a perfect green bowl. It is followed by a champagne breakfast on the open plains, served at a table set between the balloon basket and a tree. There is nothing else in East Africa quite like it.

A typical morning

What your balloon safari morning looks like

4:30–5:00am

Wake-up at your lodge or camp. Coffee and biscuits are delivered to your room.

5:00–5:30am

Your guide drives you to the balloon launch site. The sky is still dark and the plains are lit by a half moon.

5:30–6:00am

Watch the balloon inflate — it takes about 20 minutes. The burners roaring overhead are surprisingly dramatic.

6:00–7:00am

Take off. One hour of silent flight over the savannah. Your pilot points out wildlife below: elephants, giraffes, wildebeest herds, hippos in rivers.

7:00–8:00am

Land in an open plain. The ground crew has set up a full breakfast: eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, pastries, and a glass of sparkling wine.

8:00–12:00pm

Game drive back to camp in your Land Cruiser. The morning light is extraordinary after a balloon flight — the plains look different, almost more real.

From the balloon, the migration does not look like a spectacle. It looks like the earth breathing.

Why the balloon is different from any game drive

On a game drive, the wildlife happens to you — you drive where the guide thinks the animals will be, you stop when you find something, and you experience animals from inside a vehicle. From a balloon, you are above all of that. The animals do not hear you. They do not care. They just are.

During the Great Migration season, you will typically see more wildebeest from the air in one hour than you would encounter on a full day game drive. Your pilot — who has flown these routes for years — will read the landscape and direct the balloon toward where the herds are moving.

The breakfast that follows is not an afterthought. Served at a table literally in the middle of the Serengeti — no permanent structure within sight — it is one of those travel moments that makes you understand why people say Tanzania is unlike anywhere else on earth.

Questions

Balloon Safari — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a balloon safari cost in Tanzania?

Balloon safaris in Tanzania cost between $450 and $599 per person, depending on the operator, park location, and time of year. The price includes a 1-hour flight over the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, a champagne breakfast served on the plains, and a flight certificate. Park fees are not included in the balloon price — you will need a separate safari vehicle and guide for the morning game drive that follows.

Is a balloon safari in Tanzania worth it?

Yes — if your budget allows it. Floating silently over the Serengeti at dawn, watching wildebeest herds move across the plains below you, is unlike any other wildlife experience in Africa. The pilot's commentary adds context you would not get from a vehicle, and the champagne breakfast on the plains is a genuine luxury. The main reason to skip it is if you are very claustrophobic in enclosed spaces, or if your trip is shorter than 5 days — the balloon launch is at 5:30am and the whole experience runs until about 10am.

Which balloon safari operator is best in Tanzania?

The Serengeti Balloon Safaris company (operating since 1993) is the oldest and most established operator, flying from multiple launch sites across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. They are the only operator permitted in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. All operators use experienced pilots and maintain approved safety standards. Your safari operator will book on your behalf and coordinate with the company that has a launch site closest to where your camp is located.

What is the best time of year for a balloon safari in Tanzania?

June through October is peak season for balloon safaris in the Serengeti — the dry weather, clear skies, and concentrated wildlife around water sources make conditions ideal. The Great Migration river crossings (July–September) add spectacular drama to any flight. January through March is excellent for ballooning over the southern Serengeti during the calving season — fewer balloons in the air, same incredible wildlife density. April and May are the quietest months; balloons fly when weather permits.

What is the safety record of Tanzania balloon safaris?

Tanzania balloon safari operators maintain an excellent safety record. All pilots are certified and have hundreds of hours of flying experience before conducting tourist flights. Balloons undergo mandatory pre-flight inspections, and operations are grounded during high winds or thunderstorms. Passengers receive a full safety briefing before every flight.

Can children do a balloon safari?

Most balloon operators require children to be at least 7 years old and a minimum of 120cm tall to participate — this is for basket safety reasons. Younger children can sometimes be accommodated on private flights (an exclusive basket buyout), but this must be arranged in advance. From a practical perspective, the very early start time (4:30–5:00am wake-up) can be challenging for young children.

How do I book a balloon safari as part of my Tanzania trip?

The easiest path is to add it to your safari itinerary when booking with us. We pre-arrange balloon safari spots with Serengeti Balloon Safaris as part of complete safari packages — your guide knows exactly where the balloon launch site is relative to your camp, and the timing is coordinated with your vehicle on the morning of the flight. Balloon safari spots are limited and fill quickly during peak season (June–October), so booking at least 6 weeks in advance is strongly recommended.
