The dry season runs June through October in Tanzania. By July, the crater floor has dried to a golden colour — excellent for wildlife photography, as animals contrast against the tawny grass. Water is scarce outside the lake and river, which means predator-prey interactions happen in predictable areas.
The resident lion prides on the crater floor are some of the most studied in Africa. In July, they are well-fed and comfortable with vehicles — you can get remarkably close. Leopard are harder to find but present, usually in the Lerai Forest on the floor or the acacia woodland on the rim.
The rhinos are the uncertain element. Ngorongoro has around 30 black rhinos — a remarkable population given their near-extinction elsewhere. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoon, wallowing in the marshes. July is a better month for rhino than most, but they remain genuinely elusive.

The Descent: What to Expect
The road down the crater wall is steep and winding — a 650-meter descent in about 20 minutes. The viewpoint at the rim (around 2,400 metres) is worth a pause before descending. On a clear July morning you can see the entire floor from above, dotted with animals and the silver ribbon of Lake Magadi.
Once on the floor, you are in a 6-hour window. No vehicles are allowed to stay overnight. Your guide will work a circuit: the lake area for flamingo and hippo, the marsh for elephant and rhino, the open plains for buffalo and cheetah, the Lerai Forest for leopard. The circuit is flexible — your guide adjusts based on what is being reported by radio.

Combining Ngorongoro with the Serengeti in July
In July, the Great Migration herds are typically in the northern Serengeti — near the Mara River, preparing for or actively executing the river crossings that are the signature event of August and early September. Ngorongoro is a 3-hour drive from the northern Serengeti camps.
The natural combination is: Ngorongoro (2 days, including one full crater descent), then transfer to the northern Serengeti (3–4 days). This covers the crater's wildlife density and the migration spectacle in one trip. Many guests add a third park — either Tarangire for elephants or Lake Manyara for birds — before ending in Arusha.

Crater Fees and Booking Requirements
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area fee is $295 per person per 24 hours, plus the standard park entry fee for Tanzania (roughly $82.60 per person per day for the Serengeti). These fees are set by TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) and change annually — we confirm current fees at the time of quotation.
July is peak season — crater descent permits are limited and camps on the crater rim sell out months in advance. If you are planning a July Ngorongoro safari, start the booking process by March at the latest. We have held permits for July departures since January.
