The Best Safari Add-Ons: Balloon, Walking, Fly-Camping & More

The next level

A Tanzania safari is already one of the world's great travel experiences. But there are ways to make it extraordinary

The base Tanzania safari — game drives in a Land Cruiser, watching lions and elephants from a vehicle — is already remarkable. But the best operators offer a layer of extraordinary experiences that transform a standard safari into something you will talk about for the rest of your life.

These are the add-ons that our clients consistently describe as the highlights of their trips. None of them require special fitness or experience. All of them require advance planning and the right operator.

Hot Air Balloon Over the Serengeti

From $550–$600 per person

1-hour flight + champagne breakfast

Best for: Romantic couples, photographers, once-in-a-lifetime moments

Season: Year-round (best June–October)

The hot air balloon safari is the single most memorable experience you can add to a Tanzania trip. Lifting off at dawn over the Serengeti — watching the mist rise from the plains, the animals moving far below, the silence broken only by the burner flame — is genuinely transcendent. The flight lasts about an hour, and you land in the bush where a champagne breakfast is set up under an acacia tree. The balloon carries a maximum of 12–16 passengers, and every seat faces the windows.

What you actually see and experience

From the balloon you see the Serengeti from a perspective impossible from the ground — vast herds of wildebeest and zebra from above, the course of the Mara River, lions with their kills, elephants moving through golden grass. Photographers particularly value the balloon because the lighting is extraordinary and you can shoot straight down. The balloon drifts silently, so wildlife is undisturbed — you often get closer to animals from the air than from a vehicle.

Booking note

Balloon flights depart from the Serengeti's central or northern region. They must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance, and often 4–6 weeks ahead during peak season (July–October). We arrange all balloon bookings as part of our standard safari packages — just let us know when you are planning your trip.

Walking Safari with an Armed Ranger

From Included in private conservancy packages, $80–$150 for national park walks

2–4 hour guided walk

Best for: Natures enthusiasts, birders, those wanting deeper bush immersion

Season: Year-round, best in dry season

A walking safari strips away the safety barrier of the vehicle and puts you on foot in the bush. You move slowly, deliberately, reading the landscape with your guide — following tracks, identifying birds, understanding the small details that a game drive vehicle passes at speed. An armed ranger walks ahead; your guide explains the smaller ecology: dung beetles, animal tracks, medicinal plants, the sounds of the bush. Walking safaris are available in private conservancies adjacent to the national parks and in Lake Manyara National Park.

What you actually see and experience

On foot you notice the things the vehicle cannot show you: the texture of a giraffe's tongue, the smell of a lion's territorial marking, the sound of buffalo breathing in the reeds 30 metres away. The animals are aware of you differently too — you are a small, non-threatening presence rather than a loud engine. Leopard sightings on foot are actually possible in private conservancies where the leopards have become habituated to walking safaris.

Booking note

Walking safaris require a private conservancy agreement or a special Lake Manyara walking permit. Most standard national park safaris do not include walking — it must be arranged separately. We build walking safaris into our private conservancy packages as standard. If you specifically want a walking safari, tell us and we will design your itinerary around it.

Fly-Camping: Night Under the Stars

From $150–$250 per person per night

1 night (can be extended)

Best for: Adventurous travellers, couples seeking romance, photographers

Season: Year-round (best June–October)

Fly-camping is the most intimate safari experience available in Tanzania. A fly camp is a simple, lightweight camp set up by your crew in a remote location — away from other camps, away from vehicles, away from everything except the bush. You sleep in a bedroll under a fly sheet, with just mosquito netting between you and the stars. The sounds are extraordinary: lions roaring in the distance, hippos grazing near the camp, hyenas clicking at the perimeter.

What you actually see and experience

Everything. The fly camp is set up in a location chosen by your guide — typically a spot where wildlife is active at night. You may hear elephant herds passing within metres of your camp, lions calling, the specific alarm calls of impala that tell you a predator is nearby. Night game drives from the fly camp often reveal species rarely seen during the day: aardvark, aardwolf, serval cats, African wildcat. After a night under the stars, breakfast is cooked over an open fire.

Booking note

Fly-camping is available in private conservancies only — it is not permitted in national parks. It is included in our higher-tier private conservancy packages. Most operators charge extra; we include it in the package price for conservancy-based itineraries. Book at least 3 weeks in advance — the camps are small and capacity is limited.

Sundowner in the Bush

From Included — or $50–$100 for private setup

1 hour at a scenic location

Best for: All travellers — the most popular add-on

Season: Year-round

A sundowner is not really an add-on — it is a tradition. As the sun drops toward the horizon, your guide finds a scenic spot — a kopje, an acacia grove, the banks of a river — and your vehicle stops. The cooler box is opened. Drinks are poured. You sit on the roof rack or on the tailgate, watching the sky turn from gold to amber to deep orange, while the bush prepares for night around you. There is no extra cost for this — it is standard practice on every quality safari.

What you actually see and experience

The sunset over the Serengeti or Ngorongoro is one of Africa's great images. Watching it from a remote location — with nobody else around, drinks in hand — while hippos emerge from a waterhole nearby and the first stars appear is a genuinely memorable experience. For photographers, the golden hour light is extraordinary. Guides often choose locations specifically for their photographic composition.

Booking note

Sundowners are included in all our standard safari packages. No advance booking required — simply tell your guide when you are in the vehicle and they will find the right spot. Private sundowner setups (a table, chairs, a fire, personalised cocktails) can be arranged for honeymoons and special occasions.

Private Vehicle and Guide

From $150–$300 per day for exclusive use

Your entire safari

Best for: Families, photographers needing flexibility, travellers with specific wildlife interests

Season: Year-round

On a shared safari vehicle, the group's interests and schedule determine where you go and how long you stay. A private vehicle means your guide works entirely for you — if you want to spend three hours watching a leopard in a tree, you do. If you are a photographer who wants to wait for specific light, your guide waits. If you have a specific interest — birds, predator behaviour, specific species — the day is designed around you.

What you actually see and experience

With a private vehicle, you do not need to compromise. The most extraordinary wildlife moments are often the unexpected ones — a lion hunt, a cheetah mother with cubs, a herd of elephant crossing a river. On a shared vehicle, your guide may need to leave to keep to the group schedule. On a private vehicle, you stay.

Booking note

Private vehicles are included in all our luxury and ultra-luxury packages. For standard packages, upgrading to a private vehicle adds $150–$300 per day. For families with young children, a private vehicle is strongly recommended — it allows complete schedule flexibility and the guide can pace the day around children's energy levels.

The value of planning ahead

Add-ons require the right itinerary

The hot air balloon, fly-camping, and walking safaris all require specific logistics — private conservancy access, balloon departure locations, walking permits. They are not available on every itinerary. The time to plan them is when you are designing your safari, not when you arrive in Arusha.

We build all of these add-ons into our itineraries as standard where available. Tell us what you want to experience and we will design the itinerary around it.
