Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is Tanzania's flagship park and one of the most famous wildlife ecosystems on earth. Covering 14,750 square kilometres of savannah, riverine forest, and granite outcrops, it hosts the world's largest concentration of large mammals outside of protected conservancies.

Wildebeest Migration

Year-round — following the rains and grazing

Predators

Highest lion density in Africa, leopards, cheetahs

Best time

December–March (calving), June–October (river crossings)

Crowd level

High in Ndutu (Dec–Mar), moderate elsewhere

Cost

Park fee $60/day, premium camps reflect demand

Access

Airstrip at Kogatende, Lamai, or Grumeti; or 6-7h drive from Arusha

Choose the Serengeti if:You want to witness the wildebeest migration or see large predators hunting in an iconic open savannah setting. The Serengeti delivers Africa's most cinematic safari experience — but you will share it with significant numbers of other visitors, particularly during peak season.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera — a self-contained ecosystem spanning 260 square kilometres where wildlife density rivals anywhere in Africa. The crater floor hosts a permanent population of approximately 25,000 large mammals.

Big Five access

Highest chance of seeing all five in a single game drive

Rhino viewing

Black rhinos thrive here — best chance in Tanzania

Best time

Year-round; Jun–Oct peak dry season for wildlife density

Crowd level

Very high — vehicles must follow designated roads

Cost

$71/day crater fee + park entry; one of the most expensive days

Access

2h drive from Arusha, or via Lake Manyara airstrip

Choose Ngorongoro if: You have limited time and want the highest-density wildlife experience possible. A single full day on the crater floor can deliver all of the Big Five. However, the experience is constrained — vehicles must stay on marked roads, and the volume of tourists can feel crowded.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is the most accessible of Tanzania's premium safari parks from Arusha and the most underrated. During the dry season (June–October), enormous herds of elephants congregate along the Tarangire River — you will see more elephants here in a single morning than in a week elsewhere.

Elephants

Highest concentration in Northern Circuit — herds of 300+

Baobab landscape

Iconic ancient baobabs frame the savannah

Best time

June–October (dry season); Feb–March (green season birds)

Crowd level

Low relative to Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Cost

Park fee $45/day; moderate camp pricing

Access

2h drive from Arusha; ideal as a 1-2 night add-on

Choose Tarangire if: You want a high-quality safari experience without the crowds, you are combining it with Ngorongoro and Serengeti, or you are a photographer seeking the baobab-and-elephant landscape that defines Tanzania in the popular imagination.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park — 45,000 square kilometres of remote wilderness that receives a fraction of the visitors that the Northern Circuit parks attract. This is Southern Circuit safari at its finest: raw, uncrowded, and spectacular.

Wild dogs

One of the highest densities in Africa — active denning

Elephants

Large resident populations year-round

Best time

June–October; green season (Nov–Apr) for wildflowers and birds

Crowd level

Extremely low — you may see no other vehicles all day

Cost

Park fee $45/day; fly-camping available in exclusive zones

Access

Airstrip from Dar es Salaam or Arusha; road access long and rough

Choose Ruaha if: You want a true wilderness experience with almost no other tourists, you are specifically interested in African wild dogs, or you are on a multi-week Tanzania trip and want to explore beyond the Northern Circuit.

Katavi National Park

Katavi is the most remote and least-visited of Tanzania's major parks. It is a place for serious safari travellers who have been to Africa before and want something genuinely untouched. The hippo pods in the Katuma River are among the largest concentrations in Africa, and the buffalo herds number in the thousands.

Hippos

Massive pods — up to 200 hippos in the Katuma River

Buffalo

Herd sizes of 1,000+ are common

Best time

October–November (dry season, floodplains drain, wildlife concentrates)

Crowd level

Minimal — a few dozen visitors per week during peak

Cost

Park fee $45/day; limited camp options keep costs high

Access

Charter flight from Dar es Salaam or Ruaha only

Choose Katavi if: You have the time, budget, and appetite for genuine remote wilderness. The experience of being the only vehicle at a hippo pool in the middle of the African bush is irreplaceable — and something you simply cannot replicate in the Northern Circuit.

Nyerere National Park

Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere is Tanzania's largest national park at 50,000 square kilometres. It offers a different safari experience from the savannah parks — more diverse ecosystems including riverine forest, wetlands, and open plains, accessed by both vehicle and boat.

Safari style

Combination of game drives, boat safaris, and walking safaris

Wildlife

Hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, elephants, lions

Best time

June–October (dry season); March–May excellent for birds

Crowd level

Low — but growing as the Northern Circuit fills up

Cost

Park fee $45/day; boat safari adds a unique dimension

Access

Airstrip from Dar es Salaam or Ruaha

Choose Nyerere if: You want a diverse safari experience combining multiple activity types, you are travelling from Dar es Salaam rather than Arusha, or you want to avoid the Northern Circuit crowds without going as far as Katavi.

Mahale Mountains & Gombe Stream

These two parks on the shores of Lake Tanganyika are Tanzania's primate destinations. Mahale Mountains is home to approximately 800 wild chimpanzees — habituated to human presence and tracked on daily trekking expeditions through mountain forest. Gombe Stream is smaller, more accessible, and equally focused on chimpanzee encounters.

Primary draw

Chimpanzee trekking — a primate encounter, not a traditional safari

Scenery

Lake Tanganyika — crystal-clear water, forested mountains rising behind

Best time

June–October (dry season, trails accessible); Nov–Mar very muddy

Crowd level

Low, but permits are limited per day

Cost

Park fee $100/day at Mahale; chimpanzee permit $50 extra

Access

Boat from Kigoma (2-4 hours along the lake)

Choose Mahale or Gombe if: You have time for a primate trekking extension (minimum 2 nights), you want to combine beach time on Lake Tanganyika, or you are a primate enthusiast who wants the chimp experience alongside your savannah safari.

Combining Parks: The Ideal Itinerary

Most travellers have time for 2-3 parks. The Northern Circuit (Serengeti + Ngorongoro + Tarangire) is the most practical combination from Arusha, typically 5-7 days. For a 10-14 day trip, adding Ruaha as a fly-in destination creates a genuinely different second half of the safari. Our most memorable itineraries often combine the iconic Northern Circuit with a remote Southern Circuit camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which park has the best chance of seeing the Big Five?

Ngorongoro Crater has the highest density of all Big Five species in the smallest area, making it the most reliable single-park Big Five destination. However, seeing all five requires some luck in any park. The Serengeti offers excellent lion and leopard viewing, while black rhinos are best sought at Ngorongoro.

Which Tanzania safari park is least crowded?

Katavi National Park receives only a few hundred visitors per year, making it by far the least crowded major park. Ruaha and Nyerere also receive a fraction of Northern Circuit visitor numbers. The key is to visit Southern Circuit parks rather than concentrating on Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Is it worth visiting both Ngorongoro and Serengeti?

Yes — they offer distinctly different experiences. Ngorongoro is a contained caldera with extraordinary wildlife density in a small area, best visited in a single day. The Serengeti is vast and open, best for multi-day immersion and predator action. A 2-day Ngorongoro + 3-day Serengeti combination is the classic Northern Circuit.

Can I combine a safari with chimpanzee trekking in Tanzania?

Absolutely. The best combination is a Northern Circuit safari (Serengeti + Ngorongoro) followed by a flight to Mahale Mountains or Gombe Stream on Lake Tanganyika. This requires a minimum of 10-12 days total. The chimp trekking is a completely different experience from savannah wildlife viewing.

Which Tanzania safari park is best for first-time visitors?

The classic Northern Circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire — is best for first-timers because it has the most developed tourism infrastructure, the widest range of camp options, and the most iconic African landscapes. Allow 6-8 days minimum for a properly paced Northern Circuit safari.
