When to Go — Tanzania Safari Timing Guide
The best time for a Tanzania safari is June through October for dry season wildlife viewing — but this is also when the Serengeti is most crowded and most expensive. If you want to avoid crowds, the green season (March–May and November) offers solitude, lower prices, and exceptional wildlife, particularly during the calving season in February and the short rains in November. Timing is not just about weather — it is about what you want to see.
A safari in Tanzania — every season offers something different

Dry Season: June–October
Peak wildlife viewing. Animals concentrate around water sources. The Great Migration is at its peak July–October. Highest prices and most crowds — particularly August.
Green Season: Nov–May
Lush landscapes, lower prices, fewer crowds. The short rains (November) and long rains (March–May) bring green savannah and superb photography. Calving season (February) is exceptional.
Shoulder: May–June, Oct–Nov
The best of both worlds. Milder crowds, reduced pricing, excellent wildlife. Late May (before peak) and October (after migration) offer exceptional value and availability.

How to Avoid the Crowds — Our Expert Guide
Choose the Right Park
The Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara) receives 90% of Tanzania's safari visitors. The southern parks (Ruaha, Selous, Katavi, Mahale) receive less than 5% — even in August. A 7-day safari in Ruaha and Selous will give you a private game-viewing experience that the Serengeti cannot match in peak season.

Tarangire is dramatically overlooked by visitors chasing the migration. July–October is when Tarangire's elephant herds congregate along the Tarangire River in extraordinary numbers — sometimes 500+ elephants in a single stretch of river.
Choose the Right Time of Day
Midday game drives are universally avoided by visitors — which makes them the best time to be out. Lions are more active in heat. Predators use the midday sun to rest near water. You will have the same roads and watering holes almost to yourself between 12pm and 3pm.
Morning and afternoon game drives are non-negotiable — but the midday window is your secret advantage. Ask your guide to prepare a bush lunch so you can stay out.
Park Crowding by Season
| Park | Peak Season (Jul–Oct) | Green Season (Mar–May) |
|---|---|---|
| Serengeti | Extremely crowded — hundreds of vehicles | Moderate — excellent and quiet |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Very crowded — limited vehicles allowed | Moderate — 4WD limit still applies |
| Tarangire | Moderate — often overlooked | Quiet — exceptional elephant viewing |
| Ruaha / Selous | Low — private experience | Very low — best value of the year |
| Katavi / Mahale | Very low — remote wilderness | Very low — access can be difficult |

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the least crowded time to safari Tanzania?
April and November are the least crowded months. April is peak green season with the lowest prices — some lodges close but those that remain offer exceptional value. November sees the short rains begin, dramatic photography conditions, and the return of wildebeest to Ndutu. Both months offer solitude that peak season cannot.
What is the worst month for crowds in Tanzania?
August is the most crowded month. European summer holidays overlap with prime migration viewing, driving peak pricing and maximum visitor numbers in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. July is nearly as busy. If you must travel in August, consider Tarangire (often overlooked by migration chasers), Selous, or Ruaha — all excellent at that time.
Is Tanzania safe to visit during the green/rainy season?
Yes. The green season (November-May) is perfectly safe. Roads can be rougher, especially in April-May, but a 4WD vehicle handles this easily. Some remote mobile camps close during peak green season, but permanent lodges remain open. Wildlife viewing remains excellent — animals congregate around water sources, and predator action is high during calving season.
Which parks are least affected by crowds during peak season?
Ruaha National Park, Selous Game Reserve, Katavi, and Mahale Mountains receive a fraction of the Serengeti's visitors even during peak season. Tarangire is overlooked by migration-focused visitors and is excellent in July-October. The southern circuit is consistently less crowded than the Northern Circuit.
When should I book my Tanzania safari?
For peak season (July-October), book 9-12 months ahead — particularly for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. For green season (March-May), 3-6 months is usually sufficient. Last-minute bookings are possible in April and November when availability is highest.
