Head-to-Head Comparison
Three very different ways to experience Tanzania's wildlife. Here is how they compare across the factors that matter most.
| Aspect | Game Drive | Walking Safari | Balloon Safari |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Included in safari package | $50–$100 per person | $550–$650 per person |
| Wildlife Proximity | Close approach to all animals including dangerous species | Close approach to smaller wildlife; large animals observed at safe distance | Aerial view — no approach to animals |
| Physical Demands | Low — seated in vehicle | Moderate — 2 to 4 hours of walking on uneven terrain | Low — seated in basket, 1 hour flight |
| Best Time of Day | Early morning and late afternoon — peak wildlife activity | Morning — cooler temperatures, animals more active | Sunrise only — atmospheric conditions require morning flights |
| Wildlife Species Seen | All large mammals — elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, hippo | Smaller mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, plants, tracks, and signs | Herd patterns, predator-prey dynamics, landscape scale |
| Weather Sensitivity | Operates in most conditions; some roads impassable in heavy rain | No walking in heavy rain or extreme heat | Cancelled in wind, rain, or fog — least weather-tolerant |
| Minimum Age | All ages (4–5 for half-day drives) | Typically 12–16 years minimum | Typically 7–10 years + height requirement |
| Duration | Half day (3–4 hours) or full day (6–10 hours) | 1–3 hours | 1 hour flight + champagne breakfast |
Each Activity in Detail
What each safari activity actually involves

Game Drives
The foundation of any Tanzania safari. Your guide drives through the park in a 4x4 Land Cruiser, positioning the vehicle for the best wildlife sightings. Guides communicate via radio about sightings, and vehicles share information at key moments. The vehicle provides elevation and mobility — you can cover 50 to 100 kilometres of park roads in a day, following wildlife as conditions change.
Best for: All large mammals, predator sightings, Great Migration, full-day wildlife immersion
Requirements: No minimum age. Low physical fitness requirement. Early starts (5–6am) for best sightings.
Cost: Included in all safari packages — no additional cost

Walking Safaris
A guided walk in wildlife areas — either inside national parks (restricted to certain areas) or more commonly in private conservancies where walking is fully permitted. Your guide reads the environment like a book: tracks in the dirt, alarm calls from birds, the direction of wind that tells you where an elephant herd is moving. Walking safaris engage senses that game drives do not — the smell of rain on dry earth, the sound of a distant lion, the texture of bark and leaf.
Best for: Biodiversity, birdwatching, tracking skills, intimate connection with the bush, experienced travellers
Requirements: Minimum age 12–16 years depending on operator. Moderate fitness needed. Sturdy closed shoes essential.
Cost: $50–$100 per person (private conservancy walks)

Balloon Safaris
A hot air balloon flight over the savannah at sunrise — typically 45 to 60 minutes in the air followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. The balloon drifts silently over the landscape at altitudes of 100 to 300 metres, offering a view of wildlife patterns, herd movements, and the sheer scale of the Serengeti or Tarangire that is impossible from the ground. Balloon operators in Tanzania are based at specified locations and work with specific camps to integrate the experience into your itinerary.
Best for: Landscape photography, once-in-a-lifetime experience, romantic occasions, aerial perspectives
Requirements: Minimum age 7–10 years and height requirement (120cm+). Not suitable for those with mobility issues or fear of heights. Weather-dependent — cancelled in adverse conditions.
Cost: $550–$650 per person — booked separately from your safari
