The Question We Hear Most — And the Honest Answer
There is no universally correct answer. The right number of days depends on what you want to see, how you travel, and what else is in your trip. But after 48 years of guiding travellers through Tanzania, we have developed a clear picture of what each duration actually delivers.
This guide is different from most you will find online. We are not trying to sell you a longer trip — we are trying to help you understand what you are actually signing up for at each length. Read it before you book. It will save you from the most common safari planning mistake: underestimating how much time you need.
Duration
3 Days
Our Verdict
A taste — not a safari
Three days gives you one full day of game viewing, bookended by arrival and departure days. You can cover one or two areas at most. This is appropriate only if you are combining Tanzania with a Zanzibar beach stay or a Kilimanjaro climb, and want a brief wildlife introduction on one end.
What You Will See
One park (typically Tarangire + Ngorongoro Crater or just the Serengeti)
What You Will Miss
Migration, remote areas, walking safaris, fly-camping, most wildlife diversity
Duration
5 Days
Our Verdict
The minimum for a meaningful safari experience
Five days allows you to visit two distinct areas — typically the Ngorongoro Crater plus the Serengeti — with meaningful time in each. You will see excellent wildlife, experience the iconic landscapes, and return with a genuine feel for Tanzania's safari product. You will also feel the pace: early mornings, long drives, extraordinary moments.
What You Will See
Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, good Big Five chance, some predator action
What You Will Miss
Great Migration specifics, remote conservancies, walking safaris, multi-park depth
Duration
7 Days
Our Verdict
The sweet spot — everything you came for
Seven days is where Tanzania delivers its full promise. You can visit three distinct areas — Ngorongoro, Serengeti Central, and Northern Serengeti for the Migration — and do each justice. The pace is sustainable, the wildlife variety is excellent, and you will return with a profound experience rather than a rushed sampling.
What You Will See
All of the above + Migration area (July-September) or remote wildlife (other months), full Big Five opportunity
What You Will Miss
Southern Tanzania, walking elements, extended fly-camping
Duration
10 Days
Our Verdict
The complete Tanzania experience
Ten days allows you to go beyond the Northern Circuit and add meaningful elements: a private conservancy for night drives and walking safaris, the Southern Serengeti or Ndutu for calving season, or a fly-camping night. This is where the trip becomes transformative rather than merely impressive.
What You Will See
Everything in 7 days + private conservancy access, night drives, walking elements, remote areas
What You Will Miss
Very little — this is a comprehensive Tanzania experience
Duration
14+ Days
Our Verdict
The exceptional Tanzania journey
Fourteen days and beyond allows you to combine Northern and Southern Tanzania — the Ngorongoro and Serengeti with Ruaha National Park or Selous — add a Zanzibar extension, and build in breathing room between locations. At this length, the safari stops being a holiday and becomes a journey.
What You Will See
The entire spectrum: Northern Circuit wildlife density + Southern Tanzania wilderness remoteness
What You Will Miss
Nothing of significance within Tanzania
The Three-Day Rule
If you have fewer than 5 days for safari in Tanzania, consider whether this is the right trip for you right now. Three days is a teaser — not a safari. Five days is the minimum meaningful experience. Seven days is the sweet spot. Ten days is the complete Tanzania safari. Two weeks is exceptional. The question is not how little you can get away with — it is how much you want to bring home.
Talk to Don About Your DurationCommon Questions About Safari Duration
Is 5 days enough for Tanzania?
Five days is the minimum viable safari duration for Tanzania. You will see excellent wildlife — Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti — and return with a genuine experience. However, you will feel the pace. If your schedule allows only 5 days, focus on Ngorongoro + Serengeti and accept that you are getting the highlights, not the full story. Five days is better than not coming at all.
Is 7 days too long for a first safari?
Seven days is the ideal length for a first Tanzania safari. It allows enough time to settle into the safari rhythm — early mornings become natural, wildlife watching becomes meditative rather than frantic — without overstaying your welcome. Most first-time safari goers at 7 days say they could stay longer, but none feel it was too long.
How many days for the Great Migration?
The Great Migration itself can be experienced in 5 days — 3 in the Northern Serengeti around the Mara River crossings (July-September) or 3-4 in the Southern Serengeti during calving (January-March). But a Migration safari at its best requires at least 7 days to also include the Crater and build in weather-driven flexibility, since the precise timing of the crossings varies year to year.
Should I add Zanzibar to my safari?
If you have 10 days or more, adding Zanzibar is highly recommended. After 5-7 days of intense early-morning game drives, the soft white sand and turquoise waters of Zanzibar offer a genuine contrast that many travellers find deeply restorative. The transfer is only 90 minutes by air. If you have fewer than 8 days total, stay on safari — Zanzibar is a separate trip, not a brief add-on.
How many days for Kilimanjaro and safari combined?
A combined Kili climb and safari needs a minimum of 12 days: 7-8 days for the climb (Lemosho or Machame route) and 4-5 days for a quality Northern Circuit safari. Fifteen days is more comfortable. This combination is one of the most compelling in African travel — two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one trip — but it requires adequate time to do both properly.
What is the ideal safari length for photographers?
Photographers should plan a minimum of 7 days in a single area to maximise weather variability and wildlife behavioural opportunities. Ten to fourteen days in Tanzania is ideal — allowing 4-5 days in the Serengeti for migration action, 2-3 days on the Crater for density, and 2-3 days in a private conservancy for walking and night access. The longer you stay, the better your chances of exceptional photography conditions.
