Serengeti sunset — golden light over the Tanzania savanna

Destination Comparison

Tanzania vs Rwanda

Two very different ways to experience Africa. Tanzania: the world's greatest wildlife spectacle, the Great Migration, the Big Five, and Kilimanjaro at 5,895m. Rwanda: the mountain gorilla, one of the most emotionally profound wildlife encounters on Earth.

These are not mutually exclusive — combining both in a single African journey is one of the most rewarding trips you can take. But if you have to choose one, here is how to think about it.

Our Take

Tanzania and Rwanda serve different purposes — and the best trip often includes both. Tanzania delivers the classic African wildlife experience at a scale no other destination can match: the Great Migration, the Ngorongoro Crater, and a safari that virtually guarantees the Big Five in a single trip.

Rwanda's mountain gorillas offer something Tanzania cannot: a close, hour-long encounter with our closest wild relatives. Sitting among a gorilla family in the misty Volcanoes National Park, watching a silverback groom his infants, is one of those experiences that redefines your relationship with the natural world.

If you have 14–18 days, do both: the Northern Circuit safari through Tanzania's finest parks, then a short flight to Kigali for the gorilla trek. If you have to choose, let your motivation guide you: wildlife spectacle and variety, choose Tanzania. Once-in-a-lifetime primate encounter, choose Rwanda — and plan the safari for next time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I go to Tanzania or Rwanda for a first Africa trip?
Tanzania is the stronger choice for a first Africa trip. The wildlife spectacle — the Great Migration, Ngorongoro Crater, Big Five sightings — is unmatched and virtually guaranteed. Rwanda is a more specialised destination: you go primarily for gorilla trekking, and everything else is secondary. If you have two weeks and want the full range of Africa's experiences, Tanzania. If gorillas are a once-in-a-lifetime dream and you have a shorter window, Rwanda's gorilla encounter is among the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth.
Can I combine Tanzania and Rwanda in one trip?
Yes — and it is one of the most rewarding combinations in Africa. Fly from Kilimanjaro or Arusha to Kigali (about 2.5 hours), spend 2–3 days doing gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, then continue to Akagera for a classic savanna safari, or fly back to Tanzania for more wildlife. A Tanzania and Rwanda combo typically requires 14–18 days total. Many travellers do Tanzania first (safari and Kilimanjaro), then Rwanda for the gorilla extension.
What does a gorilla permit cost and is it worth it?
Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 per person (2026). This is expensive, but it funds critical conservation: mountain gorillas were down to 250 individuals in the 1970s and have recovered to around 1,100 today partly because of permit revenue. The experience — spending an hour with a gorilla family in the mist — is genuinely once-in-a-lifetime. No other wildlife encounter matches the intimacy of sitting among eastern Africa's most peaceful and intelligent animals.
Which is better for gorillas — Rwanda or Uganda?
Both Rwanda and Uganda offer excellent gorilla trekking experiences at comparable prices. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is more compact and logistically straightforward, with Kigali as a major international hub. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is more remote and atmospheric, and permits are slightly cheaper ($700). Rwanda is generally considered the smoother choice for first-time gorilla trekkers; Uganda offers a more rugged experience for those who want deeper immersion.
Does Tanzania have gorilla trekking?
No — Tanzania does not have mountain gorillas. The closest gorilla populations are in Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park, 2–3 hour flight from Arusha) or Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest). Tanzania's primate offering is primarily chimpanzees: Gombe Stream National Park (accessible from Dar es Salaam) and Mahale Mountains National Park on Lake Tanganyika are both world-class chimp trekking destinations.
What is the best order — Tanzania safari first or gorilla trekking first?
For most travellers, Tanzania first then Rwanda works best. Fly into Arusha, do your Northern Circuit safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro), optionally climb Kilimanjaro, then fly to Kigali for gorilla trekking. This way you get the classic Africa wildlife experience first, and the gorilla encounter becomes the pinnacle finale. Some travellers prefer gorillas first as a 'appetiser', but the Serengeti's wildlife spectacle is harder to beat as a follow-on.
Is Rwanda safe for tourists?
Rwanda is one of Africa's safest countries. Kigali is consistently ranked among the cleanest and safest capital cities on the continent. The tourism infrastructure is excellent — Volcanoes National Park is exceptionally well-run, and the Rwanda Development Board maintains high standards for gorilla trekking operations. Violent crime against tourists is rare. As with anywhere, take standard precautions, but Rwanda is considered a very secure destination.
