Solo Traveller Welcome

Solo Travel, Shared Wonder

Tanzania is one of the world's great solo travel destinations. The wildlife is extraordinary, the landscapes are life-changing, and the safari environment is naturally social in a way that makes travelling alone feel anything but lonely. Whether you are a seasoned solo traveller or taking your first trip alone, a Tanzania safari is an experience that rewards the independent spirit.

The practical question our solo guests ask most is the same one you are probably asking right now: will I pay more? The honest answer is: it depends on how you travel. Group safaris mean no single supplement. Private safaris mean the solo premium applies. But even the private option is more accessible than you might think, and we have designed our Tanzania solo safari programmes specifically to make the experience affordable and easy to arrange.

This FAQ addresses the questions we hear most from solo travellers considering Tanzania. If your question is not here, WhatsApp us — we answer personally and promptly.

Common Questions

Solo Safari Tanzania FAQ

Is Tanzania safe for solo travellers?
Tanzania is one of the safest safari destinations for solo travellers. In established safari areas — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire — violent crime is virtually non-existent. Solo women travellers in particular report feeling very safe with established operators. The main considerations are standard: standard travel precautions in cities, following your guide's instructions on safari, and arranging airport transfers in advance. We have hosted hundreds of solo travellers and have protocols in place to ensure everyone feels secure from the moment they land.
Can I do a Tanzania safari as a solo traveller without paying a single supplement?
Yes — the main way to avoid a single supplement is joining a group safari. We offer small-group safaris (maximum 6 guests) where solo travellers pay the standard per-person rate. We match solo guests of the same gender wherever possible so you share a vehicle with like-minded travellers. For a fully private safari (solo traveller with your own vehicle and guide), a solo supplement of 30–50% typically applies to accommodation. The group option is an excellent way to safari if you're comfortable sharing the experience with others.
How much does a solo Tanzania safari cost?
A group join-in 7-day Northern Circuit safari costs $1,750–$3,500 per person including accommodation, park fees, meals, and a shared vehicle. A private solo safari costs $2,800–$5,500 per person for the same itinerary — the private supplement applies because you're paying for your own dedicated guide and vehicle. The biggest cost variable is time of year: green season (March–May) offers 30–50% lower pricing across all accommodation tiers. Park fees add approximately $650–$750 per person for a 7-day circuit.
What is it like dining alone at safari camps?
Most safari camps are social environments — tables are shared, pre-dinner drinks are a group affair, and conversations flow naturally between guests who have shared the same extraordinary day in the bush. Even naturally reserved travellers find this easy. At smaller tented camps (4–8 tents), the intimacy is even greater. If you prefer private dining, most camps will accommodate this on request — simply let us know at booking. The communal aspect is part of what makes safari special, but your preferences are always respected.
Will I feel out of place as a solo traveller on safari?
Not at all. Safari attracts curious, independent people from all walks of life. Our group safaris regularly include solo travellers who arrived alone and left with lifelong friends. The shared experience of seeing wildlife — a lion hunt at dawn, theMigration river crossing — creates instant camaraderie in a way few other travel experiences can match. Most solo guests say the social element was an unexpected highlight. If you're open to meeting people, safari is one of the most naturally sociable travel environments.
Can solo women safely travel alone on safari in Tanzania?
Solo women travellers are among our most enthusiastic guests. Tanzania's safari industry is welcoming to women travelling independently. All our guides are trained in etiquette for international women travellers and our accommodation choices take solo female safety into account. The key is choosing an established operator with proper protocols — we provide 24/7 Arusha office support and your guide's contact details before you travel. We regularly host solo women from their late 20s through 70s and have yet to have a single safety incident.
What are the challenges of solo safari?
The main practical challenge is cost — without someone to share the private vehicle supplement, solo travel is more expensive per person. The second challenge is dining alone in remote locations, though as described above, this is rarely awkward. The third is that safari is inherently a waiting game — it requires patience and the ability to be present without a schedule. For some solo travellers accustomed to city-paced travel, the slower rhythm of the bush takes adjustment. We find that guests who embrace the pace of the wilderness — not fight it — have the best safaris.
What if I want privacy but still want to meet people?
This is a common request and we handle it well. Choose a private safari (solo supplement applies) but stay at camps and lodges known for their social atmosphere. Properties like Ubuntu Camp, Kimihi Migration Camp, and Ole Kulele have common areas where guests naturally gather. You can have the best of both worlds: your own vehicle and schedule, combined with genuine social interaction at mealtimes and campfires. We always brief our camps in advance when they have solo guests who enjoy company.
