The difference is exclusivity and personalisation. In a group safari, you share the vehicle with other clients (typically 4–7 people) and the guide manages competing interests. In a private guide safari, you have the guide, the vehicle, and the itinerary entirely to yourself. The guide builds knowledge of your preferences over time and tailors every experience accordingly.
How much does a private guide safari cost?
A private guide safari costs approximately 30–50% more than a group safari of equivalent accommodation level. For a 7-day private guide safari staying at comfortable camps (not the most luxury tier), expect to pay from $6,000–$8,000 per person. At luxury camp level, the price rises to $10,000–$15,000 per person. The premium reflects the exclusivity, the guide's full-time service, and the private vehicle.
Can I request a specific guide?
Yes — if you have a specific interest (birding, photography, conservation), tell us and we will match you with the guide who best fits that specialism. We have guides who are specialist ornithologists, professional photographers, and former wildlife researchers. The private guide model allows this kind of matching in a way that group safaris cannot.
Is a private guide safari worth the extra cost?

If you are a first-time safari-goer on a tight budget, a group safari is an excellent introduction and the private guide experience will always be available on a future trip.
What if I want a private guide but cannot afford the full premium?
There are ways to get some of the private guide benefit at a lower cost. A private vehicle without a private guide (you get your own Land Cruiser but a rotating driver) gives you scheduling flexibility even if not guide continuity. Or consider upgrading to a private guide for just part of the trip — the Serengeti portion, for example — rather than the full safari.
How far in advance should I book a private guide safari?
The best private guides — the specialists, the ones with particular expertise — book up 6–12 months ahead, especially for peak season (June–October). If you want a specific guide or a specific guide with a specialism, start the conversation early. For general private guide requests, 3–6 months is usually sufficient.
