4-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Your guide collects you from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport and you head south toward Tarangire. The two-hour drive passes through Maasai countryside — red-earthed villages, flat-topped acacias, and distant Rift Valley views. On entering Tarangire, the landscape transforms immediately: vast golden savannah dotted with Africa's largest concentration of baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old. Settle into your lodge overlooking the Tarangire River, then head out for a late-afternoon game drive. The elephants are usually already moving toward the water.

Tarangire is Tanzania's most underappreciated park. Over 3,000 elephants — East Africa's largest concentration — plus lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and more than 550 bird species occupy the park year-round. In the dry season (June-October) wildlife concentrates along the river, creating remarkable sightings from the vehicle. In the green season, the park is lush and beautiful with newborn animals. Your guide knows every corner — where lions rest, where the leopard den is, which pools the hippos favour. A full day inside the park with a packed lunch by the river.

Depart at first light for the Ngorongoro crater — you descend 600 metres into the caldera as dawn breaks over 100 square miles of unbroken wildlife habitat. Lions, hyenas, elephants, hippos, flamingos, and the endangered black rhino are all residents. A morning game drive with a picnic beside the hippo pool, then ascend and drive north to the Serengeti. The 2.5-hour drive descends into the park through the Naabi Hill gate. Arrive in the Serengeti in late afternoon for your first game drive on the endless plains.

The Serengeti at dawn is unforgettable — cool air, golden light across the plains, wildlife most active in the first hours after sunrise. Your guide will position the vehicle to maximise your final morning. Watch for lions who have been hunting through the night, leopards returning to their kill in the acacia branches, and the vast herds of zebras and gazelles that give the Serengeti its name (from the Maasai word for 'endless plains'). After breakfast, begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving by early afternoon for your onward travel.
