More Time in the Wild, Less Time on Roads

The defining feature of a fly-in safari is efficiency without sacrifice. You board a light aircraft in Arusha and land in the heart of Tarangire 20 minutes later. Two days later you are over the Serengeti, watching thousands of wildebeest from the window. Three hours after that you are standing on a white sand beach in Zanzibar. The distance Tanzania covers — from highland forests to endless savannah to turquoise ocean — is best seen from the air.

The Fly-In Difference

Why Choose a Fly-In Safari

Aerial Perspective

Seeing the Serengeti from the air changes your understanding of it. The scale — millions of hectares of unfenced wilderness — is impossible to comprehend from the ground. Migration herds stretching to the horizon, the dark line of the Mara River snaking through the plains, the distinct green of Ndutu against the gold grass — these are images you cannot make from a vehicle.

Time reclaimed

The drive from Arusha to the Serengeti takes 7-8 hours on roads that are rough, dusty, and tiring. The flight takes 1.5 hours. That six-hour difference is an extra half-day in the Serengeti — two additional game drives, a bush breakfast, or simply the rest that makes the rest of your trip better. Fly-in safaris are the choice of travellers who respect their own time.

Exclusive Access

Some of Tanzania’s finest camps — fly-in only properties in private conservancies and remote corners of the Serengeti — cannot be reached by road. Fly-in access gives you these options: intimate camps with six tents, private dinners in the bush, and game drives with no other vehicles in sight. Road access is limited; aerial access is unlimited.

Common Questions

Fly-In Safari FAQ

Is flying safe in Tanzania?
Yes. Light aircraft used for safari flights are maintained to high standards and operated by experienced pilots who fly these routes daily. Tanzania's safari airspace is busy and well-regulated. The aircraft used are typically Cessna Caravan or similar twin-engine planes, which are extremely reliable. Weather is assessed before every flight, and schedules are flexible enough to accommodate weather diversions.
How much luggage can I bring on the light aircraft?
Light aircraft have strict weight limits — typically 15kg per person in soft-sided bags (no hard suitcases). This is non-negotiable as the planes are weight-sensitive for safety. We strongly recommend a soft duffel or backpack rather than a rigid suitcase. Laundry is available at most camps, often complimentary.
What is the advantage of a fly-in safari over a drive safari?
Time: a flight from Arusha to the Serengeti takes 1.5 hours, versus a full-day drive on rough roads. That time saved translates to more time in the parks and less fatigue. The flights offer aerial views of the landscape — migration herds seen from the air are extraordinary. Fly-in safaris also access remote camps that cannot be reached by road.
Can children fly on the light aircraft?
Children of any age can fly on light aircraft in Tanzania. Infants under 2 sit on a parent's lap. Children 2 and above require their own seat. For families with very young children, we recommend discussing the logistics in advance — the small aircraft can feel intimidating for first-time flyers.
What happens if a flight is cancelled due to weather?
Weather-related cancellations are rare but do happen — particularly during the long rains (April-May). In this case, we rearrange the schedule and use road transport where possible, or wait for conditions to improve. Your itinerary remains the same; only the transport mode changes. We build buffer time into premium fly-in itineraries for this reason.
How does fly-in compare on price?
Fly-in safaris add $800-1,500 per person compared to the equivalent drive safari due to charter flight costs. The value is clear: you save two full travel days, access remote camps you cannot reach by road, and have more time in the wildlife areas. For travellers with limited time, the premium is justified.
