Route Overview

Why Climb the Machame Route?

The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest, beginning in dense rainforest and ascending through heath, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the frozen summit zone. Each day brings a completely different landscape — the variety is part of what makes this route so extraordinary.

The route is often called the "Whiskey Route" — a reference to its reputation for being more challenging than the gentler "Coca-Cola" Marangu path. But challenging does not mean technical. No climbing equipment or prior mountaineering experience is needed. The Barranco Wall requires a head for heights and some scrambling ability, but it is not a technical climb.

What makes Machame special is the combination of scenic variety, solid acclimatisation profile (on a 7+ day itinerary), and the iconic Barranco Wall — a dramatic start to Day 5 that many climbers cite as the highlight of their whole climb.

10-Day Itinerary

Machame Route + Northern Circuit Safari

Seven days on the mountain, then three days in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Every detail handled by our own Arusha team.

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Drive to your Arusha hotel for a gear check, climb briefing, and welcome dinner. We review your equipment list, answer every question, and make sure you are fully prepared for the mountain.

Day 2

Machame Gate to Machame Camp (1,800m)

After breakfast, we drive to Machame Gate on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes. The trek begins immediately in dense rainforest — the path is well-maintained but can be muddy in the wet season. Colobus monkeys are commonly seen in this zone. We arrive at Machame Camp by late afternoon with views of the Shira Plateau above.

Day 3

Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

A steeper day. We exit the rainforest and enter the heath zone, where giant heathers and groundsels appear. The terrain becomes open moorland as we ascend the Shira Plateau — one of Kilimanjaro's most dramatic landscapes, with sweeping views toward Kibo and the Western Breach. The air thins noticeably. We arrive at Shira 2 Camp in time for sunset.

Day 4

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900m) via Lava Tower

We climb toward Lava Tower (4,600m) — the highest point of the day — before descending into the Barranco Valley. This 'climb high, sleep low' profile is key to altitude acclimatisation. The Barranco Wall looms above camp, its dark basalt face our challenge for tomorrow morning. Evening brings clear mountain air and extraordinary stars.

Day 5

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,000m)

The Barranco Wall scramble — 2 hours of steep but straightforward rock climbing. No ropes needed, but a head for heights helps. Once over the top, the trail contours along the southern circuit with views of the Southern Glaciers above. We reach Karanga Camp by mid-morning, giving ample time to rest and hydrate before tomorrow's summit push.

Day 6

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

A short climbing day designed for rest and final acclimatisation. The landscape turns to alpine desert — bare, rocky, starkly beautiful. We reach Barafu Camp by early afternoon. The rest of the day is spent sleeping and eating as much as possible. Your guides prep your summit gear. At 23:00, we begin the most demanding night of your life.

Day 7

Summit Day — Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Depart at midnight. 6 hours of steep switchbacks through glacier country, guided by nothing but your headlamp and the stars above. We reach Stella Point (5,739m) at first light, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa. The descent from the summit is brutal on the knees but achingly beautiful. We push through to Mweka Camp, arriving by mid-afternoon, and collapse into our tents.

Day 8

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — then fly to the Serengeti

The final descent through misty rainforest to Mweka Gate takes 3-4 hours. We receive our summit certificates and celebrate with the team. Then we drive to Arusha, catch a light aircraft to the Serengeti, and arrive at camp in time for a sunset game drive. The contrast from the mountain to the savanna is extraordinary.

Day 9

Full Day Serengeti Game Drive

Wake at first light for the morning game drive when predators are most active. The Serengeti's golden grasses stretch to every horizon — wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and if we are fortunate, lion, leopard, or cheetah. The afternoon drive takes us to different parts of the park. We stop for a picnic lunch in the bush and return to camp as the sun sets over the acacia trees.

Day 10

Ngorongoro Crater — then return to Arusha

We wake early and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — a natural amphitheatre 600m deep and home to virtually every species of Tanzanian wildlife, including a resident black rhino population. Three hours inside the crater is one of Africa's greatest wildlife experiences. We then drive back to Arusha, arriving by early evening for a farewell dinner.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the Machame Route over other Kilimanjaro routes?

The Machame Route offers the best balance of scenic variety, summit success rate, and value. It approaches from the southwest, passing through five distinct ecological zones — rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and glacier — giving you an extraordinary range of landscapes. At 7 days, it is long enough for proper acclimatisation but compact enough to suit most travellers' schedules. It is the most popular route for good reason.

How hard is the Machame Route?

The Machame Route is rated Moderate to Strenuous. The biggest challenge is the Barranco Wall on Day 4 — a steep, rocky scramble that takes about 2 hours. The summit night (Day 6) involves 12-14 hours of hiking, including a 1,200m elevation gain. Previous multi-day hiking experience is helpful but not essential if you are in decent cardiovascular shape.

What is the summit success rate on the Machame Route?

With a 7-day itinerary, the Machame Route achieves a summit success rate of approximately 75-85%. Success rates improve significantly on 8-day climbs, where the additional day allows for better acclimatisation. We recommend the 7-day minimum — shorter Machame itineraries (5-6 days) have much lower success rates due to inadequate time for altitude adjustment.

Can I add a safari after the Machame climb?

Absolutely — and it is one of the most rewarding combinations in African travel. There is nothing quite like celebrating a Kilimanjaro summit with a Serengeti game drive the following day. We typically offer a 3-day Northern Circuit safari (Serengeti and Ngorongoro) after the climb, finishing with a night in Arusha before your international departure.

What is the best time to climb the Machame Route?

The best windows are January-February (dry season, clearer skies, colder nights) and September-October (short rains, fewer crowds, green landscapes). March-May is the long rainy season — the Machame Route's rainforest section becomes very wet and slippery. December is possible but around Christmas and New Year it is significantly more crowded on the mountain.

How does Machame compare to Lemosho?

Both routes share the same path from Shira to Barranco to Barafu, but Lemosho approaches from the quieter western side and takes 8 days, giving it a higher summit success rate. Machame is more popular because it is slightly cheaper (fewer nights on the mountain) and can be completed in 7 days. If acclimatisation time is your priority, choose Lemosho. If schedule and value matter more, Machame is excellent.
