June marks the beginning of the long dry season in Tanzania — and the start of what many consider the best safari season. The short rains of March-May are a memory, the landscape is transitioning from green to the iconic golden savanna of the classic safari imagination, and wildlife is beginning to concentrate around the permanent water sources that will define the next four months. The Great Migration herds are on the move, heading north through the Serengeti. Road conditions are excellent, weather is reliably dry and sunny, and — crucially — the peak-season crowds have not yet arrived.

June is the insider's month: the wildlife experience is essentially identical to July and August, but the parks are quieter, prices have not reached their peak, and your guide has more flexibility at the key wildlife hotspots. The first Grumeti River crossings of the season may be happening in June, as the wildebeest herds encounter their first major river obstacle on their annual migration north. The Mara River crossings — the main event — typically begin in earnest in July, but by late June your guide will be positioning you for the earliest crossing action.

The Great Migration — The Northern Movement Begins

In June, the Great Migration enters its northern movement phase. The wildebeest herds have moved from the southern and central Serengeti and are traversing the western corridor, crossing the Grumeti River as they go. The Grumeti crossings are similar in character to the Mara River crossings — wildebeest massing on the riverbanks, crocodiles waiting below, the dramatic plunge into the water — but less predictable and less concentrated than the July-September crossings further north. Your guide will position you at the best crossing points based on current herd locations.

By late June, the first wildebeest are arriving in the northern Serengeti near the Mara River. The river crossings at Mara are not yet in full force — that peak typically comes in July and August — but early crossings can happen, and the presence of the first herds on the northern bank signals the start of the crossing season. A June safari gives you both the Grumeti crossings and the beginning of the Mara crossings.

The Weather — Dry, Clear, and Comfortable

June is dry season at its finest. Days are predominantly sunny, rain is extremely rare, and the humidity of the green season has cleared. Temperature ranges are comfortable for safari: 13-16°C at dawn on early morning game drives (chilly enough for a warm layer, especially on the Crater rim), warming to 25-28°C by mid-morning. The air is clear and visibility is excellent — the famous golden light of the African savanna is at its best. This is the landscape you see in the wildlife photographs that define the classic safari: golden grass, distant Acacia trees, endless horizons.

Road conditions are excellent across the northern circuit in June. The grader roads of the Serengeti are smooth and fast, and weather delays are unheard of. June is the easiest month logistically — full flexibility for your safari planner, and your guide can move between areas freely based on where the Migration herds are located.

Where to Focus Your June Safari

Western Serengeti / Grumeti: The June migration action centres here — the herds are crossing the Grumeti River, and this is where your guide will focus much of your time. The crossings here, while less dramatic than the Mara, offer exceptional wildlife viewing with fewer vehicles than the northern crossing points.

Northern Serengeti / Mara River: By late June, the first herds are arriving. Your guide will be tracking their movement and positioning for early crossings. Even if the main crossing action is still a few weeks away, the northern Serengeti in June has excellent resident wildlife and is less crowded than it will be in July and August.

Ngorongoro Crater: June Crater game viewing is exceptional — descend at first light for the best experience and lowest vehicle numbers. Lion, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, and occasional black rhino sightings are all possible.

Our Recommendation

June is our recommended month for travellers who want the full peak-season wildlife experience without the peak-season price tag and crowd levels. The Great Migration is underway, the weather is perfect, the roads are excellent, and the wildlife is concentrating by the day. If you have flexibility in your travel dates and can avoid July and August specifically, June delivers essentially the same experience at a significantly better price point and with more space in the parks. Your guide will have more flexibility, your camps will be less full, and the overall experience will feel more exclusive. June is the smart traveller's peak season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is June a good time for a Tanzania safari?

June is one of the best-kept secrets in the Tanzania safari calendar — the long dry season has begun, the landscape is turning golden, wildlife is concentrating around water sources, and the Great Migration herds are moving north through the Serengeti. The key difference from July and August is crowd levels: June has significantly fewer visitors, and peak-season pricing has not yet taken full effect. Your guide has more flexibility, the wildlife hotspots are less congested, and the experience is essentially the same quality as peak season. June is our recommended month for travellers who want peak-season wildlife viewing without the peak-season crowds.

Where is the Great Migration in June?

By June, the wildebeest herds have moved north from the southern and central Serengeti and are moving through the western corridor and into the northern Serengeti. The exact location depends on where the rains have fallen and where water is available — the herds follow the rainfall patterns. In a typical June, the herds are crossing the Grumeti River in the western corridor (similar to the Mara River crossings but less dramatic), with the first animals beginning to arrive in the northern Serengeti near the Mara River. The great Mara River crossings typically begin in July.

How is Ngorongoro Crater in June?

Ngorongoro Crater in June is excellent — the dry season has pushed wildlife to the crater floor in high concentrations, the roads are at their best, and vehicle numbers, while higher than in the green season, are significantly lower than in July and August. Lion, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, and regular black rhino sightings make for exceptional game viewing. June is one of our recommended months for a Crater visit: you get the dry-season wildlife density with more manageable vehicle numbers than the peak months.

How does June compare to July?

June and July are both excellent months for wildlife viewing — both offer the dry-season conditions that concentrate wildlife and make roads easy. The key differences are: July is slightly more expensive (peak pricing kicks in), July has more vehicles at wildlife hotspots, and July is when the Mara River crossings definitively begin (June crossings are possible but less reliable). If your priority is seeing a Mara River crossing, July is marginally better. If you want essentially the same wildlife experience with fewer crowds and lower prices, June is our recommendation. Many of our clients who have experienced both prefer June.

What should I pack for a June Tanzania safari?

June is the start of the dry season — pack for warm days and cool mornings. Early morning game drives can be cold on the Serengeti plains and particularly on the Ngorongoro Crater rim: 10-14°C at dawn. By mid-morning it is warm: 25-28°C. Layering is essential: lightweight layers that you can add and remove as the temperature changes. Neutral bush colours (khaki, tan, brown, olive) are essential for disturbing wildlife. Sun hat, high SPF sunscreen, good sunglasses, and binoculars are essential. No rain gear needed — June is firmly dry season.

Can I combine June with Zanzibar?

June is an excellent month to combine safari with Zanzibar. The weather in Zanzibar in June is dry, sunny, and comfortable — one of the best months on the island. Temperatures are warm but not extreme (25-30°C), humidity is lower than in the green season, and the diving and snorkelling conditions are excellent. June marks the beginning of Zanzibar's high season, so the island is lively but not yet crowded. It is a perfect counterpoint to an active safari: wildlife by day, beach by evening.

Is June a good month for Kilimanjaro climbing?

June is the start of the best climbing season on Kilimanjaro — the long dry season brings clear skies, lower humidity, and excellent trail conditions. The Machame and Rongai routes are particularly good in June. Note that June is when the crowds begin to build on the popular routes — July and August are significantly more crowded. If you want Kilimanjaro climbing conditions similar to July but with fewer people on the trail, June is an excellent choice. It is also an ideal combination: a June safari followed by a Kilimanjaro climb makes for an exceptional Tanzania trip.

How much does a June Tanzania safari cost?

June is shoulder-season pricing — expect to pay 10-20% above green season but 10-20% below peak July-August pricing. A 7-day northern circuit safari in June starts at approximately $2,900 per person (mid-range), rising to $5,500+ per person for luxury camps. June offers excellent value: you get dry-season wildlife conditions and the beginning of the Migration's northern movement at prices that have not yet reached peak. If budget is a consideration, June is a smarter choice than July.
