Your Journey

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

Your private guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you to your lodge on the slopes of Mount Meru. Evening dinner with your guide — we walk through the two-week itinerary, answer every question, and adjust the pace to your interests.

Stay: Arusha Coffee Lodge or similarMeals: Dinner
Day 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Drive south into Tarangire — Tanzania's elephant park. The Tarangire River runs year-round, pulling massive herds of elephants, giraffes, and buffalo to its banks. Baobab trees dot the landscape like ancient sentinels. Afternoon game drive with your first chance to spot lions and leopards.

Stay: Tarangire Safari Lodge or similarMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3

Full Day in Tarangire

A second day in Tarangire allows you to explore beyond the main river valley. The park is one of Tanzania's most underrated — less crowded than the Serengeti, with exceptional predator sightings and massive elephant families. Dawn drive when the light is soft, then a relaxed breakfast before afternoon exploration.

Stay: Tarangire Safari Lodge or similarMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4

Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater

Morning game drive in Tarangire, then drive north to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop at a local Maasai village for an optional cultural visit — traditional bomas, song, and dance. Arrive at the crater rim in time for sunset over the caldera. The view from the rim at dusk is one of Africa's great panoramas.

Stay: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (crater rim)Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5

Full Day at Ngorongoro Crater

Descend into the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera for a full day on the crater floor. 25,000 large mammals live here in a self-contained ecosystem — endangered black rhinos graze the soda lake, lion prides rest in the swamps, and elephants wade through the highland springs. Pack a picnic lunch and take your time.

Stay: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (crater rim)Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6

Ngorongoro to Serengeti — via Olduvai Gorge

Cross the Ngorongoro Highlands and descend into the Serengeti, stopping at Olduvai Gorge — the cradle of humankind where some of humanity's oldest fossils were discovered. Afternoon game drive as the endless plains open up before you. The Serengeti's golden grass stretches to the horizon in every direction.

Stay: Serengeti Serena Lodge or tented campMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Days 7-8

Two Full Days in the Serengeti

Two days to explore the world's most famous wildlife destination. Track the lion prides of the central Seronera valley, find leopards draped in sausage trees, watch cheetahs scan the horizon from golden mounds. During migration season (roughly June to October), columns of wildebeest stretch to the horizon — over a million animals in motion. Dawn drives, afternoon drives, and optional balloon safari at dawn (additional cost).

Stay: Serengeti Serena Lodge or tented campMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 9

Northern Serengeti — River Crossings

Travel north toward the Mara River, where the Great Migration's most dramatic moments unfold. Even outside migration season, the northern Serengeti is exceptional — remote, beautiful, and home to large concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, and predators. Relaxed game drives with excellent wildlife viewing away from the crowds.

Stay: Northern Serengeti tented campMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 10

Northern Serengeti to Zanzibar

Morning game drive in the northern plains, then transfer to the Serengeti airstrip for your flight to Zanzibar. The flight takes approximately 2 hours with a connection in Arusha. Arrive on the Spice Island in the early afternoon. Transfer to your beachfront resort on the east coast — white sand, turquoise water, warm Indian Ocean.

Stay: Zanzibar beachfront resortMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Days 11-12

Zanzibar — Beach & Ocean

Two full days to rest, swim, and explore. The east coast beaches near Paje and Jambiani offer the finest white sand and clearest water in Zanzibar. Optional activities include snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll (world-class reef), a traditional dhow sailing trip at sunset, kitesurfing, or a visit to the spice plantations. Or simply do nothing — the beach is right outside your door.

Stay: Zanzibar beachfront resortMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
Day 13

Zanzibar — Stone Town

Guided morning visit to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the historical heart of Zanzibar. Walk narrow alleyways lined with ornate Arab doors, visit the former slave market, explore the Sultan's Palace, and browse the bustling Darajani Market. Afternoon at leisure — swim, relax, or explore the fishing village of Nungwi in the north.

Stay: Zanzibar beachfront resortMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
Day 14

Zanzibar — Departure

Final morning on the island. Sleep late, take one last swim, or visit a spice shop for souvenirs. Transfer to Zanzibar International Airport for your departure flight. End of an extraordinary two weeks in Tanzania.

What Guests Say About This Safari

We had 14 days and wanted to see everything Tanzania offers. This itinerary delivered exactly that — three distinct safari parks plus a full week in Zanzibar. The pace was perfect. Not rushed, not boring.

James & Fiona R.

London, UK

Starting with the elephants of Tarangire and ending on a white sand beach in Zanzibar — this trip had everything. The Ngorongoro day was a highlight, but honestly, the contrast of bush to beach is what makes this itinerary so special.

The Safari Route

Three Parks, Three Different Worlds

Day 2-3

Tarangire National Park

Tanzania's elephant park — massive herds gather along the Tarangire River. Baobab-dotted landscapes and excellent predator sightings with far fewer visitors than the Serengeti.

Day 4-5

Ngorongoro Crater

The world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera — a self-contained ecosystem with 25,000 animals including the endangered black rhino, lions, elephants, and flamingo-lined soda lakes.

Day 6-9

Serengeti National Park

The world's most famous wildlife destination. Endless golden plains, the Great Migration (Jun-Oct), exceptional predator densities, and some of Africa's best game viewing year-round.

Common Questions

2-Week Tanzania & Zanzibar FAQ

Is 2 weeks enough time for Tanzania and Zanzibar?
Two weeks is the ideal length for this combination. You get seven full safari days — enough to cover three parks thoroughly and see real wildlife depth — plus seven days in Zanzibar to truly unwind.
Should I do more safari days or more Zanzibar days?
For first-time Tanzania visitors, we recommend 7 safari and 7 beach days. The safari portion gives you three distinct ecosystems — Tarangire's elephants, Ngorongoro's density, and the Serengeti's vastness. If you've been before and want pure rest, shift to 5 and 9.
What is the best order — safari then Zanzibar or Zanzibar then safari?
Safari first, then Zanzibar is the classic sequence. You start with the adventure and action, then finish on the beach relaxing. Most guests prefer to build up to the beach as a reward at the end.
What time of year is best for a 2-week Tanzania and Zanzibar trip?
June to October is peak safari season with the Great Migration in the Serengeti and calm seas in Zanzibar. December to March is excellent too — the Serengeti has calving season and Zanzibar has perfect weather.
Can I add a Kilimanjaro climb to this itinerary?
Yes — and it's a spectacular combination. Add the Lemosho or Machame route before your safari for the full Tanzanian experience. See mountkilimanjaroclimb.com for climb options, or ask us to design the full three-week itinerary.
Is this suitable for families?
Absolutely. Two weeks gives families time to settle into the safari rhythm before the beach rewards them. Children under 12 get half-price on the safari portion, and Zanzibar's east coast beaches are safe for swimming.
