Tanzania's Greatest Safari Icons
Serengeti vs Ngorongoro Crater
The two crown jewels of Tanzania's Northern Circuit, side by side. We have operated in both for 48 years. Here is our honest comparison.
Our recommendation
Both — combined
The ideal northern circuit safari includes both. Ngorongoro for density and the black rhino. Serengeti for scale, Migration, and wilderness. Two days at Ngorongoro, three at the Serengeti.

How they compare
Six factors, honestly assessed
| Factor | Serengeti | Ngorongoro Crater |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 14,763 km² — one of the largest national parks in Africa. Vast enough that you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. | 264 km² — the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera. Small enough to explore thoroughly in a single day. |
| Wildlife density | Exceptional across an enormous area — 3,000+ lions, 1.5M wildebeest, 1,000+ leopards, 7,500+ elephants, 1,000+ cheetahs. The Great Migration is the defining wildlife spectacle. | The highest wildlife density in Africa per square kilometre. 25,000 large animals on the crater floor including 26 black rhinos, 62 lions, 400+ hyenas, and thousands of flamingos. |
| The Big Five | All five present. Lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos are all regularly seen. The leopard population (1,000+) is particularly strong. | All five present and frequently seen in a single day — Ngorongoro's defining advantage. The black rhino population of 26 is the star attraction. |
| Landscape | Diverse beyond comparison: open golden plains, ancient granite kopjes, riverine forest, marshland, and the wild northern Lamai Wedge. Photographically extraordinary. | The crater itself is a spectacular amphitheatre — steep forested walls, the pale salt-flat floor, and Lake Magadi's pink flamingo fringe. Beautiful but contained. |
| Crowd levels | Disperses visitors across 14,763 km². Even in peak season, wildlife sightings can be private. The northern Serengeti and Western Corridor are often almost empty. | All vehicles are confined to 264 km². At peak season (July-October), the crater floor can feel busy around major sightings. Morning descents help avoid crowds. |
| Cost | $82.60 per person per day in peak season. Accommodation ranges from mid-range tents to top-tier ultra-luxury properties. A 5-day Serengeti safari from $2,400 per person. | $295 per vehicle crater service fee on top of conservation area fees (~$70 per person). This adds significant cost per day but limits vehicle numbers. A 2-day Ngorongoro crater safari from $800 per person. |

Tanzania's great wilderness
Why the Serengeti stands apart
The Serengeti is not just a park — it is a feeling. 14,763 km² of plains, kopjes, and riverine forest where the Great Migration moves in its ancient rhythm. When you watch a river crossing from the northern banks in August, with 10,000 wildebeest massing at the edge and crocodiles waiting below, you understand why the Serengeti has defined the word safari for a century. The scale of it is humbling in the best possible way.

A world in a bowl
Why Ngorongoro is irreplaceable
There is nothing else on Earth quite like the Ngorongoro Crater. The world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera is home to 25,000 large animals in a self-contained ecosystem. Descending the steep crater walls at dawn and watching the crater floor unfold below — dotted with elephants, rhinos, and thousands of zebras and wildebeest — is one of the great arrivals of the safari world. The density here is extraordinary: in a single morning, you can see all Big Five, including the black rhino.

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for first-time safari-goers: Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater?
For first-time visitors, the choice depends on your priorities. If you want scale, drama, and the Migration, start with the Serengeti. If you want the most reliable, concentrated wildlife experience in the shortest time, Ngorongoro is extraordinary. The ideal itinerary combines both — we recommend starting with Ngorongoro (2 days) then flying or driving to the Serengeti (3-4 days). This gives you the crater's density and the Serengeti's scale in one trip.
Can I see both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in one trip?
Absolutely — and this is the most common itinerary we recommend. A 6-8 day northern circuit safari typically includes Ngorongoro (2 days) and the Serengeti (3-4 days), with optional additions of Tarangire or Lake Manyara. The drive from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti's Naabi Hill gate is approximately 3-4 hours. Many clients fly into the Serengeti from Ngorongoro for a seamless, time-efficient combination.
Is Ngorongoro Crater worth the additional fees?
Yes — the $295 per vehicle crater service fee is significant, but it directly funds anti-poaching patrols, crater management, and the ranger presence that makes Ngorongoro one of Africa's best-managed parks. The experience of descending into the caldera at dawn and watching 25,000 animals spread across the crater floor is unlike anything else in Tanzania. For clients short on time, Ngorongoro delivers more wildlife per hour than any other destination.
Which has fewer crowds: Serengeti or Ngorongoro?
The Serengeti, decisively. All vehicles in Ngorongoro are confined to 264 km², meaning sightings can have 15-20 vehicles at peak times. The Serengeti's 14,763 km² disperses visitors widely. Even in peak season (July-October), you can have lion kills or migration crossings with fewer than 10 vehicles. The northern Serengeti and Western Corridor are often almost empty.
Which is better for wildlife photography?
Different strengths. The Serengeti offers incomparable compositional variety — golden plains at dawn, granite kopjes at sunset, river crossings in dramatic northern territory. The Ngorongoro Crater offers extraordinary density and the unique setting of the caldera walls as a backdrop. For sheer variety and creative freedom, Serengeti. For concentrated density and the drama of the caldera, Ngorongoro.
What about the Great Migration — does Ngorongoro have migration wildlife?
The Migration itself passes through the Serengeti — Ngorongoro is not on the Migration route. However, the calving season (January-March) takes place in the Ndutu area, which is in the southern Serengeti and a 1-2 hour drive from Ngorongoro. Many clients combine the two: a morning at Ndutu watching the calving, followed by Ngorongoro for the afternoon. This is one of the most wildlife-rich combinations available anywhere in Africa.
Which is better for big cats and predators?
The Serengeti is the better predator destination overall — Africa's highest leopard population, excellent cheetah density, and the migration-related drama of lions following the herds. The Serengeti also has wild dog populations in the Western Corridor. Ngorongoro's 62 lions are concentrated in a small area and habituated to vehicles, making for reliable sightings, but the predator diversity is lower than the Serengeti.
How many days do I need at each destination?
Ngorongoro: 1 full day is sufficient — descend at dawn and spend 5-6 hours on the crater floor. Serengeti: minimum 2 full days, ideally 3-4. The park is large enough that different regions (central, southern, northern, Western Corridor) offer distinct experiences. The difference between 2 days and 4 days in the Serengeti is enormous.
