Best Time to Visit Zanzibar — A Month-by-Month Guide from 48 Years on the Island

Weather, sea conditions, crowds and hotel rates for every month of the year — from an Arusha-based family that has been sending guests to Zanzibar since 1978.

March 2026 · Best Time · 8 min read

The best time to visit Zanzibar is usually June through October for dry beach weather, clear seas and smooth safari connections after Serengeti or Ngorongoro. December through February is warmer and busier, while April and May suit travelers who prefer quieter beaches and more flexible hotel rates.

Zanzibar has two dry seasons and two rainy periods, so the right month depends on what you value most: beach days, diving visibility, honeymoon privacy, family school-holiday timing or a lower-key finish after safari. This month-by-month guide compares the trade-offs before you commit to dates.

As Arusha-based operators with 48 years of experience organizing Tanzania trips, we use Zanzibar as a premium finish after early-morning game drives: slow beaches, spice farms, Stone Town and warm Indian Ocean evenings. This guide is deliberately practical, so you can match the island's weather rhythm to the way you actually want to travel.

The Dry Seasons: June – October

June through October represents Zanzibar's peak season, with the kaskazi — the northeast trade wind — bringing cool, dry air from the Indian Ocean. This is the most popular time to visit, and for good reason: the weather is reliably sunny, the sea is calm and crystal clear, and water activities are at their best.

July through September is particularly exceptional for divers and snorkelers. The visibility can reach 30-40 meters, and this is prime season for swimming with whale sharks off the coast near Mnemba Atoll. August hosts the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), one of East Africa's largest cultural events, drawing filmmakers and artists from across the continent.

The trade winds make this ideal sailing weather, and dhow cruises along the coast are particularly magical during these months. Our guests consistently report that the evenings are pleasantly cool — perfect for seafood dinners on the beach under star-lit skies.

The Long Rains: April – May

April and May bring Zanzibar's long rains, locally called the masika. Heavy afternoon showers are typical, often lasting 30 minutes to two hours, with morning and midday typically remaining dry. This is the quietest period on the island, and some hotels and restaurants reduce their prices by 20-40%.

Despite the rain, this is actually one of our favorite times to send clients — if they understand what they are getting. The island is lush and green, the spice farms are in full harvest (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla), and you will have beaches almost to yourself. The water can be choppy and visibility reduced for diving, but for land-based activities, this is genuinely rewarding.

If you are primarily a beach traveler who wants spa treatments, spice farm tours, Stone Town exploration, and cultural experiences, April-May offers exceptional value with fewer tourists. Our guides know the island intimately and will position you for the best experiences regardless of the weather.

The Short Rains: November – December

November typically marks the beginning of the short rains, known as the mvuli. These are usually brief, dramatic afternoon thundershowers that clear quickly, often leaving spectacular sunsets in their wake. The vegetation is green and vibrant, and the island has a fresh, alive quality that the dry months lack.

December brings the festive season, and Zanzibar's beaches fill with European holiday travelers. This is a magical time to be on the island — Christmas and New Year celebrations are joyful occasions, with beach parties, seafood feasts, and a general sense of celebration. Book early if you are planning a December visit, as accommodation fills quickly.

The Hot Months: January – March

January and February are Zanzibar's hottest months, with temperatures often reaching 32-35C and high humidity. The sea is at its warmest (27-29C), making it perfect for swimming but less comfortable for active pursuits. This is peak diving season, however, and Mnemba Atoll and Mafia Island offer world-class dive experiences during these months.

March sees the weather begin to shift, with increasing clouds and the first hint of the long rains coming. It is a transitional month, often offering good value as operators adjust their pricing. For travelers who prioritize diving and relaxing over active exploration, March can be an excellent choice.

Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors who want the quintessential Zanzibar experience — clear waters, dhow sailing, spice tours, and beach relaxation — June through September is your window. Book early, expect higher prices, and arrive prepared for breezy evenings.

For travelers who have already experienced the highlights and want a different perspective, April-May offers genuine value and a Zanzibar that few tourists ever see — lush, quiet, and authentically local. November balances good weather with reduced crowds and the beginning of the green season's beauty.

Whatever month you choose, we have been sending guests to Zanzibar for 48 years, and the island consistently delivers something extraordinary. The key is matching your expectations to the season — and that is where local expertise makes the difference.
