If the Great Migration river crossings are the dream, plan for July to early October and base yourselves in the Lamai Triangle or Kogatende — small camps, twenty-minute drives to the crossings, far fewer vehicles than the central Serengeti. Southern Tanzania + Stone Town + Beach
For couples who have already seen the north, or who want total seclusion from the start. Ruaha has Tanzania's largest elephant population and some of the best fly-camping in Africa — sleep on a sandbar in the riverbed under the Milky Way. Nyerere (formerly Selous) adds boat safaris on the Rufiji. Then fly via Dar es Salaam to Stone Town and a beach resort on the south or south-east coast. Fewer than 1% of northern-circuit visitors make it down here.

Sunset dhow cruises, beach barbecues, the most romantic dining scene in East Africa. Pick this side if you want atmosphere and don't mind some other honeymooners nearby.
Zanzibar South-East — Paje & Michamvi
Quiet, bohemian, kitesurfing capital
Long empty beaches, low-key boutique hotels, kitesurfing in Paje if either of you is keen. Pick this side for privacy and a slower pace.
Stone Town
UNESCO old town — one night at the start of the beach leg
Carved wooden doors, rooftop dinners, the old slave market, Forodhani Gardens at night. Don't skip it — Stone Town is what gives Zanzibar its depth, and it sets up the beach stay nicely.
Mafia Island
Total seclusion, world-class diving, whale sharks
Twenty minutes by air from Dar es Salaam, almost no other tourists, and some of the best diving on the East African coast. Whale sharks pass through between October and March.
One night in Stone Town: even on a beach honeymoon, spend one night in Stone Town before transferring to the coast. The carved doors, the rooftop dinners, and the Forodhani night market give Zanzibar its depth — and they make the beach leg feel like an arrival rather than a landing.

How many days do we need for a Tanzania safari and beach honeymoon?+
Ten to twelve days is the right window for a first safari-and-beach honeymoon. Four to five nights on safari, three to four on Zanzibar, plus an arrival night in Arusha or Stone Town. Anything under nine nights total will feel rushed; anything over fourteen is excellent but only necessary if you are adding a Kilimanjaro climb, a Rwanda gorilla extension, or a southern-circuit detour.
What is the best time of year for a safari and beach honeymoon in Tanzania?+
June through October is the classic dry-season window — the Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti, reliable weather on Zanzibar, and cooler nights in the bush. January and February are also excellent: calving season in the southern Serengeti, warmest Zanzibar water of the year, fewer other travellers. Avoid the long rains in April and May for a first-time honeymoon.
Which part of Zanzibar is most romantic for a honeymoon?+
The north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) has the best swimming beaches and the most atmosphere — sunset dhow cruises, beach dinners, a livelier social scene. The south-east coast (Paje, Michamvi) is quieter and more bohemian — kitesurfing in Paje, more privacy, longer beaches. Do we need a private guide and vehicle on a safari and beach honeymoon?+
On a honeymoon, yes. Sharing a vehicle with other guests means their schedule dictates yours — early starts, fixed lunch stops, and no flexibility to linger at a leopard sighting. Private vehicle and guide lets you set the pace: late breakfasts, sundowners wherever you want, the option to skip a drive entirely and stay at camp. The cost difference is real but the upgrade is significant.
Can we add a Kilimanjaro climb to a safari and beach honeymoon?+
You can, but it changes the shape of the trip. A six to eight-day Kilimanjaro climb (Lemosho or Machame route) at the start, then a shorter safari, then a beach decompression, makes a beautiful twenty-day journey for adventurous couples. For most first-time honeymooners we recommend keeping the climb separate — it is hard physical work and not the right way to start a marriage.
