June arrives in Zanzibar like a sigh of relief. The long rainy season has ended, the island has dried into its golden best, and the air has lost the heavy humidity of May. The transition from green season to peak season is visible everywhere: the palm fronds look crisper, the sand is dry, and the light has taken on the warm amber quality that makes June photography so distinctive. This is the month when Zanzibar begins to deliver the experience that travel magazines publish — reliably sunny, warm, and beautiful.

June Weather — The Dry Season Arrives
June is the month when Zanzibar becomes Zanzibar again — reliably sunny, dry, and settled. The long rains have ended, and the southeast trade winds begin to establish themselves, bringing drier air from the Indian Ocean. Humidity drops noticeably from May levels, and the oppressive quality of late April and May's air is replaced by something fresher and more comfortable.
Days in June are predominantly sunny — rainfall drops sharply to approximately 50mm for the month (down from 150–200mm in May), typically as brief overnight showers that do not affect daytime activities. The seas remain calm from May, and the transition from the calm-season ocean to the trade-wind season means the water is still comfortable for swimming.
What changes visually is the island's colour palette. May's vivid greens begin to fade as the ground dries, and Zanzibar takes on its characteristic golden and amber tones: dry palm fronds, sandy paths, the warm ochre of the laterite roads. This is the classic Zanzibar aesthetic — the one that appears in most travel photography — and June delivers it reliably.

Diving in June — Peak Season Conditions Return
June marks the return of excellent diving conditions. With the end of the long rains, freshwater runoff into the Zanzibar Channel decreases sharply, and water clarity improves week by week. By mid-June, visibility at Mnemba Atoll reaches 25–40 metres, and the channel currents begin bringing the larger pelagic species back to the reefs.
The Zanzibar Channel in June is one of the best dive destinations in the Indian Ocean. Hammerhead sharks are encountered regularly at deeper sites; manta rays frequent the channel; and the reef fish life at Mnemba, Matemwe, and Chumbe is abundant. Turtles are a consistent feature at Mnemba, where they have been protected for decades.
Water temperature in June is 25–27°C — comfortable with a 3mm wetsuit or a full suit for deeper dives. Air temperature is pleasant enough that diving in the morning and spending the afternoon on the beach is comfortable without being hot.
Things to Do in June
June's reliable weather opens up everything the island offers. The dolphin tours to Kizimkazi are excellent — the south coast seas are calmer than they become later in the trade-wind season (July and August bring choppier conditions on the south coast). Mnemba snorkelling and diving are at their best. Spice tours are comfortable in the dry morning air. Stone Town exploration is ideal in the cooler morning hours.
For safari combiners, June is particularly interesting: the Great Migration is beginning to build in the north — wildebeest are concentrating in the western corridor and around the Mara River as they prepare for the July–October river crossing season. A June Northern Circuit safari delivers excellent wildlife viewing in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, combined with a Zanzibar beach extension that is fully settled into dry-season conditions.
June Costs — Peak Season Pricing
June enters peak-season pricing — a significant jump from May's shoulder-season rates. This is the start of the European summer holiday window, and prices reflect the increased demand.
Mid-range beachfront rooms: $80–150 per night. Luxury resorts: $280–500 per night. Booking 4–6 weeks ahead is advisable for June, particularly for the second half of the month when the school holiday period in Europe begins in earnest.
A complete 5-night Zanzibar extension in June — mid-range accommodation, spice tour, diving day, and transfers — costs $900–1,500 per person. At luxury level: $2,000–3,000.
Our Verdict — June
June is one of the best months to visit Zanzibar. The long rainy season is definitively over, the island is dry and beautiful, the diving is excellent, and the wildlife combination (Great Migration building, Ngorongoro Crater superb) is compelling. The trade-off is higher prices than May and increasing visitor volumes.
If you want the classic Zanzibar experience — golden light, turquoise water, reliable sun — June delivers it. It is less crowded than July and August, making the first half of June a particularly sweet spot: excellent weather, improving conditions, and prices that have not yet hit their July peak.
