Dining Where the Wildlife Roams
Some of the world's most memorable meals happen in places where there are no walls — where your table overlooks a watering hole frequented by elephant, where your breakfast is interrupted by a giraffe wandering past, where dinner is served by candlelight and the sound of lions calling in the distance. Tanzania's wilderness camps and lodges have elevated bush dining to an art form.
Types of bush dining
Six Ways to Dine in the Wild

Sunrise Bush Breakfast
Depart camp before dawn and drive to a secluded spot in the park. As the sun rises over the Serengeti, your cook prepares a full breakfast — eggs, pastries, fresh fruit, Tanzanian coffee — while wildlife moves around you in the golden morning light.

Sundowner with a View
The African sundown ritual: stop at a scenic viewpoint as the day cools, with drinks served alongside snacks while the landscape transforms in the evening light. The Ngorongoro rim, the Serengeti plains, and the Tarangire tamarind groves all offer exceptional settings.

Private Bush Dinner
A dedicated table set up in a remote location — perhaps on a rocky outcrop, in a clearing known for leopard sightings, or overlooking a watering hole. Multiple courses, candlelight, and the sounds of the African night. This is the quintessential luxury safari experience.

Sundowner Flight
For the ultimate aerial sundowner — a micro-light or fixed-wing flight that ends with drinks on a remote airstrip or hilltop as the sun sets over the wilderness below. Available at select properties in the Serengeti and from Kilimanjaro departures.

Tree Dinner
Dining platforms built into ancient ebony or acacia trees — some with views over watering holes, others simply for the experience of eating high above the bush. A few camps in Tanzania have permanent tree dining structures; others arrange temporary setups.

Fly Camping Dinner
For those sleeping under canvas in a fly camp — dinner is often cooked over an open fire and served in the mess tent or around the campfire. The simplicity is part of the appeal: this is wilderness dining in its most authentic form.

Practical information
What to Know Before You Book
When to book
Bush dining experiences should be arranged at booking — especially private dinners and bush breakfasts, which require camp logistics planning.
Cost range
Included at luxury camps. At mid-range camps, expect to pay $50–$200 per person for a private bush dinner. Micro-light sundowners from $350 per person.
Weather considerations
Bush dining is weather-dependent. Rain may move the experience indoors or to a covered area. In the green season (March–May), bush breakfasts may start later to avoid heavy morning rain.
Dietary requirements
All camps accommodate dietary requirements if notified in advance — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal. Notify at booking.
What to wear
Smart casual. Safari colours are not required for bush dining — this is not a game drive. Many guests dress up slightly for private dinners. Layers for cooler evening temperatures.
Tipping
If your guide or camp chef has arranged a special bush dining experience, a personal tip on top of the camp tip pool is appropriate — $20–$50 per person for exceptional service.
