Tanzania Has Two Distinct Seasons — Both Are Excellent

Tanzania's climate is simpler than most people expect. The dry season (June to October) is peak wildlife viewing — animals concentrate around water, roads are at their best, skies are clear. The green season (November to May) transforms the landscape into something lush and photogenic, with dramatically lower prices and fewer vehicles. Both seasons offer extraordinary wildlife experiences. This guide covers what to expect in every month.

  • Some roads become difficult after heavy rain (4WD essential)

Park-Specific Notes

How Weather Affects Each Major Park

Serengeti

The dry season concentrates wildlife in the north and around water. In the green season, wildlife spreads across the plains. The Western Corridor and southern Ndutu are accessible year-round.

Ngorongoro Crater

The most reliable park in Tanzania regardless of season. The Crater floor has water year-round, so wildlife remains concentrated. Roads can be muddy but are rarely impassable in the green season.

Tarangire

Elephant herds concentrate at the Tarangire River in the dry season. In the green season, the park is beautiful but wildlife is more dispersed. Tarangire is generally accessible year-round.

Lake Manyara

Flamingos are most concentrated during the dry season. In the wet season, many birds disperse. The park is compact enough to do in half a day regardless of season.

Common Weather Questions

Safari Weather FAQ

What is the best month for a Tanzania safari?
There is no single best month — it depends on what you want to see. July to October is peak for Great Migration crossings. January to March is extraordinary for calving season. June and November offer excellent wildlife with fewer vehicles. April and May have the lowest rates but some roads become difficult.
Does it rain every day during Tanzania's green season?
Not constantly. The green season has afternoon and evening showers, not continuous rain. Morning game drives are typically dry. When it does rain, it is often heavy bursts followed by clearing. You will get wet, but it rarely ruins a safari day.
What should I pack for Tanzania safari weather?
Layers are essential. Early mornings can be 5-15°C; midday 25-30°C. Bring: light neutral clothing, a warm fleece for early drives, a waterproof jacket, a hat, and sturdy shoes. Avoid bright colours and white — neutral earth tones blend with the environment.
Is the Serengeti different in rainy season vs dry season?
Completely different landscapes. Dry season: golden, open savannah with animals concentrated around water. Green season: emerald plains, flowers, migratory birds, and wildebeest calving. The trade-off is some muddy roads and reduced camp staffing.
What is the temperature at Ngorongoro Crater rim vs floor?
The rim (2,200m altitude) can be 5-10°C at night and early morning — cold even in the dry season. The Crater floor is 600m lower and 20-25°C by mid-morning. Bring a warm layer for the rim crossing regardless of month.
Can I do a Tanzania safari in April or May — is the weather too bad?
April and May are the wettest months but also the cheapest — many camps offer 30-50% discounts. Roads can be challenging after heavy rain (4WD essential). Wildlife viewing remains excellent. For photographers and budget travellers who can handle wet conditions, April and May are underrated gems.
