Four Distinct Areas, One Extraordinary Crater
Where you stay around Ngorongoro changes everything. The crater rim gives you the most iconic views and shortest descents. Ndutu rewards you during calving season with wildlife concentrations found almost nowhere else. Karatu offers genuine value and community immersion. And the wider Conservation Area opens up walking safaris, night drives, and the freedom that the crater floor itself cannot offer. After 48 years of guiding in this region, we know each area intimately — and we match our guests to the right location based on season, budget, and what they most want to experience.

The Crater Rim
The crater rim is the most iconic lodge location in Tanzania — a sweeping high-altitude plateau where lodges perch literally on the edge of the caldera. From here you wake to views that stretch 600 metres straight down to the crater floor, watchable from your bed through floor-to-ceiling windows. The rim location means a shorter descent to the floor each morning, and the evenings are cold, clear, and star-filled. The trade-off is altitude — at 2,300 metres, some guests feel the elevation, and the vegetation is highland forest rather than typical savannah.
Best For
Iconic views, luxury experience, rhino sightings, atmospheric highland setting
Mood
Elevated and exclusive — the most dramatic lodge setting in Africa

Ndutu & The Southern Ndutu
Ndutu sits in the southeastern corner of the Ngorongoro Ecosystem — a vast wilderness area that links the Crater with the southern Serengeti. During calving season (December to March), this is one of the most wildlife-dense places on Earth: thousands of wildebeest drop their calves on the short grass plains, and predators follow in extraordinary numbers. Ndutu lodge areas are more rustic and intimate than the rim, with a genuine bush feel. The crater is a 45-minute drive away, making Ndutu better suited to guests spending 2+ nights in the area.
Best For
Calving season (Dec–Mar), predator action, authentic bush atmosphere, southern Serengeti extension
Mood
Wild and seasonal — the Ngorongoro experience at its most authentic

Karatu & The Highlands
Karatu is the main town and gateway to the Ngorongoro region — a proper Tanzanian community sitting between the crater and Lake Manyara. The lodges in and around Karatu are generally more affordable than rim properties, and offer a very different experience: you are embedded in the local landscape, farm country transitions to forest, and the crater descent goes through rich highland farmland. For guests combining Ngorongoro with Lake Manyara or doing a longer northern circuit, Karatu makes logistical sense and offers excellent value.
Best For
Value-conscious travellers, combining with Lake Manyara, longer northern circuit itineraries, farm-to-table atmosphere
Mood
Gateway and community — the local Tanzania experience before or after the crater

The Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the crater, Ndutu, Empakaai, and vast stretches of highland wilderness beyond the national park boundaries. Lodges and camps within the NCA but outside the crater floor operate under different rules than the national park: off-road driving is permitted, night game drives are allowed, and walking safaris with armed guides are possible. This is the choice for travellers who want a more active, adventurous Ngorongoro experience beyond the 6-hour crater floor limit.
Best For
Off-road game drives, walking safaris, night drives, extended Ngorongoro stays, cultural Maasai experiences
Mood
Adventurous and less confined — the Ngorongoro beyond the tourist trail

The Fine Print
Ngorongoro Crater Floor — Rules and Practicalities
The crater is a national park with strict regulations designed to protect its extraordinary ecosystem. Understanding these rules before you go ensures you make the most of your time on the floor.
- ✦Maximum 6 hours on the crater floor per 24-hour period — vehicles must exit by 18:00
- ✦No off-road driving permitted within the crater national park boundary
- ✦No walking safaris inside the crater floor (armed guides required for walking outside the rim road)
- ✦Black rhino viewing is best early morning — they retreat to shaded areas by mid-morning
- ✦Flamingos gather in the crater's saline lake — best seen in the dry season (June–October)
- ✦The Lerai Forest on the floor is exceptional for elephant and buffalo viewing
Our guides are experts at maximising your 6 hours on the crater floor — we know the best timing for rhino sightings, where the lions typically hunt in the morning, and which viewpoints the other operators skip.
