7-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Your guide meets you at Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport and you drive to Lake Manyara National Park — about a 90-minute journey through the Rift Valley floor. The park is smaller than Tarangire or the Serengeti, but extraordinarily varied: a lake edged with pink flamingos, a groundwater forest of fig trees and palms, and wildlife that includes hippos in permanent pools, elephants along the lake shore, and if you're fortunate early in the morning, the famous tree-climbing lions that Manyara's lion population is known for.

A relaxed morning game drive in Manyara, finishing by late morning when the heat builds. After lunch and a short drive, you enter Tarangire National Park and begin to understand why it is the favourite park of Tanzania's most experienced guides. The landscape changes: vast golden savannah, ancient flat-topped acacia trees, and the distant rumble of elephants moving toward the Tarangire River — the only permanent water source in the park during the dry season.

Tarangire holds over 3,000 elephants — the largest population in East Africa — plus lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and more than 550 bird species. Your guide has spent decades learning this park's rhythms: which waterholes the elephants prefer at different hours, where lions den in the long grass, which kopjes a leopard favours. Spend the full day inside the park, with a picnic lunch beside the river, watching the constant flow of wildlife to and from the water.

Drive north from Tarangire, stopping at a viewpoint overlooking the Rift Valley before arriving at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After settling into your rim lodge, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for an afternoon game drive. The crater — the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera — holds 25,000 large animals in permanent residence. Lions on the hunt. Hippos bellowing in the lake. Thousands of flamingos lining the soda lake. And the endangered black rhino, present year-round and most reliably seen in the afternoon.

An optional pre-dawn wake-up for a sunrise walk along the crater rim with a naturalist guide — an extraordinary experience listening to the crater wake up before the vehicles descend. After breakfast, leave the crater and begin the drive into the Serengeti, crossing the Olduvai Gorge where the Leakey family discovered Homo habilis, 1.8 million years old. The landscape transforms gradually as you enter the Serengeti proper — the endless grass sea that has defined Africa's image of wilderness for generations.

The Serengeti in a single day is overwhelming. In two full days you begin to understand it. Today you rise before dawn and spend the morning following a lion pride, watching a leopard drag prey into a tree, tracking a cheetah across the open plain. After a midday rest, the afternoon game drive takes you into a different region of the park — the kopje fields where ancient granite boulders provide lookout points for predators, the river crossings where crocodiles wait with prehistoric patience.

Your last morning in the Serengeti. Wake before dawn for the sunrise game drive — often the most beautiful and wildlife-active hour of the day. Watch the sun paint the endless plains gold, track the nocturnal predators returning from their night's hunting, follow the morning movement of the herds. Return to camp for breakfast, then begin the drive back toward Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon with a lifetime of memories.
