The Complete Northern Circuit

Ten days allows you to do the northern circuit properly — four parks, two full Serengeti days, and a pace that means every game drive is about the wildlife rather than the logistics. This is the itinerary our guides recommend when clients ask how to see Tanzania at its best.

Wildebeest herd crossing the Serengeti plains during migration season — dust rising as thousands of animals move in unison across the golden savannah
The Great Migration — 1.7 million wildebeest following the rains across the Serengeti
Elephant herd moving toward the Tarangire River at sunset — the largest elephant concentration in East Africa
Tarangire at sunset — Tanzania's most elephant-dense park

Lake Manyara National Park — Flamingos, Lions, and Forest

Day 3

Lake Manyara to Tarangire — Elephant Country

Morning game drive in Lake Manyara, then transfer to Tarangire. Afternoon game drive in Tarangire as the sun angles low — the light is extraordinary, and elephant herds are often encountered on the road. Overnight at a Tarangire lodge.

Stay: Tarangire lodgeMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4

Tarangire — East Africa's Greatest Elephant Concentration

Full day in Tarangire, Tanzania's most elephant-dense park. The permanent Tarangire River draws large herds, particularly in the dry season. Your guide follows the elephants, finding lions, leopards, and other wildlife along the river and in the baobab-studded landscape.

Day 5

Tarangire to Central Serengeti — Into the Legend

Day 6

Central Serengeti — Full Day Wildlife Viewing

Day 7

Northern Serengeti — Migration Territory

Morning game drive heading north toward the Mara River. The northern Serengeti is where the Great Migration passes through from July to October. Even outside migration season, this area offers excellent wildlife viewing with fewer vehicles than the central plains.

Day 8

Northern Serengeti — Second Full Day

A second full day in the northern Serengeti. Morning and afternoon game drives maximize your time in one of Africa's most remote-feeling wilderness areas. During migration season, you may encounter massive wildebeest herds moving across the plains or crossing the Mara River.

Stay: Northern Serengeti campMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 9

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater — World's Greatest Wildlife Basin

What Guests Say

Ten days gave us everything Tanzania has to offer. Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions, two incredible days in Tarangire watching elephants at sunset, and then four full days in the Serengeti where we finally felt like we understood the place. Our guide's knowledge deepened each day.

Michael and Susan T.

We almost booked eight days. The extra two days made the trip — one more day at Lake Manyara and a second full day in the northern Serengeti where we watched the migration herds crossing the Mara River. Worth every penny.

Common Questions

10-Day Safari FAQ

What is the cost of a 10-day Tanzania safari?
A 10-day Tanzania northern circuit safari at mid-range lodge level costs between $4,000 and $5,500 per person. This includes all four major parks (Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro), a dedicated guide, 4x4 vehicle, all meals, and accommodation. Luxury lodge upgrades typically add $2,000-3,000 per person. Budget camping safaris for 10 days start around $2,200 per person.
Is 10 days too long for a Tanzania safari?
Ten days is not too long — it is close to ideal for the northern circuit. You cover four excellent parks with enough time in each to truly explore rather than just pass through. Two full days in the Serengeti means your guide can follow wildlife rather than racing to an itinerary. In our experience, clients on 10-day safaris consistently report higher satisfaction than those on shorter trips.
What makes a 10-day safari different from an 8-day?
The additional two days in a 10-day safari are spent at Lake Manyara (one day) and give you a second full day in the northern Serengeti. Lake Manyara adds a completely different ecosystem — the soda lake with flamingos, the forest with elephants and primates, and the tree-climbing lions.
Can I add a balloon safari to a 10-day trip?
Absolutely — a Serengeti balloon safari is one of the finest additions to any Tanzania safari. At approximately $599 per person, a balloon flight over the Serengeti at sunrise, followed by a champagne bush breakfast, is a bucket-list experience.
What is the best route for 10 days in Tanzania?
The optimal 10-day route is: Arusha → Lake Manyara (1 day) → Tarangire (2 days) → Central Serengeti (2 days) → Northern Serengeti (2 days) → Ngorongoro Crater (1 day) → Arusha. This covers the four major northern circuit parks in a logical clockwise direction, minimizing backtracking.
When should I book a 10-day Tanzania safari?
For June to October travel, book at least 3-4 months in advance to secure your preferred lodges and guide. For the Great Migration months (July-October), 6 months is safer. For November to May green season travel, 1-2 months is usually sufficient.
